I stop by here periodically, and this weekend I saw that the little store is still for rent. For those who missed my first few postings, it is an old general store/gas station that was photographed by FSA photographer Marion Post Wolcott in 1939.

I've spotted this place on my map and loved its name, so I went and looked for it. It's deep in rural Greene County and this is really all it is: a place where the mosquitos cross, marked by an old store. This photo was taken in 2005. Since then, the structure has been restored and is now for rent.
Amazingly, I just found out that my favorite photographer, Marion Post Wolcott, took a photo of this very store in its prime in 1939.

Mosquito Lake, in Alpine County, CA is an amazing, mirror-surfaced body of water at 8,000 ft on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada Range (Pacific Grade). It is accessible only in the warmest months of the year, the highway being closed by snow rest of the time. The rustic hunting cottages are National Forest Recreation Residences.
Looking at these pictures I can't help hearing Wagner's Ride of the valkyries running through my head
There was a little sunshine on otherwise a rainy day. Breeding grounds for the mosquitoes everywhere.
Ph.D. student Cassie Steele and advisor Emily McDermott, assistant professor of entomology, set up a trap used to capture mosquitoes in the field. They published a survey of earlier studies identifying and characterizing the hearing abilities of mosquitoes.
