Extended Big Toe Pose or Uthita Padangusthasana is a strong standing balancing pose that strengthens, stretches, opens, releases and above all increases mental focus. Practice pose on both sides, be patient and work on increasing the length of the pose by focusing on a non moving spot (Drishti), and rooting firmly through the standing leg and foot, while engaging the abdominal muscles.

Upward-Facing Dog, Urdhva Mukha Svanasana is a key beckbend, a foundational part of the flow from pose to pose during the practice of Sun Salutations, especially if the practitioner is looking for a more intense back bend than Cobra Pose (which can be practiced first, then transition to Upward- Facing Dog). It is important to remember to press palms, spreading though the fingers while lifting though the heart and open across the chest muscles as well as lifting upwards through thighs and legs; lengthening and strengthening throughout the body; shoulder blades toward the center away from the ears. Enjoy the inner calm and the overall sensation of strength and flexibility while practicing this pose.

On Sunday, January 31, 2016, Beacon Hill Church held a worship service which included both the child dedication for two families and the baptism of five people. It was a wonderful time of celebration.

Pose of the week is a Seated Spinal Twist with legs in Cow Face Pose; Gomukhasana in Sanskrit. Start this pose in Easy Seated/ Sukhasana, then bring one leg over the other; if the knees could stack - great, if not, no worries simply move the feet forward (easier version), or bring the heels closer to the hips, only if the flexibility allows. Once seated, firmly start twisting from the waist upwards into one direction, using the hands to deepen the twist (neck and head last to twist, focus on twisting through the torso and oblique muscles). Take a few mindful breaths on the first side, then come back to center switching legs, then twisting in the other direction, again holding the pose for several breaths. Enjoy the sense of calm and rejuvenation in mind and body. This pose is great to practice anywhere, in fact I find myself practicing it on the plane, on a long car ride, or while waiting for an appointment.

Astavakrasana or Eight Angled Pose is an asana dedicated to the sage Astavakra, an arm balancing posture that strengthens the arms, wrists and core; it increases mental focus; it challenges the body and the mind. One-Legged King Pigeon Pose, known as Rajakapotasana- widely recognized as a variation of a pigeon or sleeping pigeon posture, ideal for hip opening and releasing tightness in the hip area. The variation above offers a releasing even deep back bend. It puffs up the chest (opens the pectoral muscles) which resembles a pigeon, therefore the name of the pose. Please practice the pose on both sides of the body (any variation, add upper bod/spinal twist; use props if necessary to support the hip if tight or if feeling any pressure on the knee or surrounding joints. Also, Seated Pigeon is a great option for those with hip or knee surgeries or have back problems.
