The wat (temple) was small and a few village boys lived there with the old Thai abbot. The village was redoing the inside and thereby gaining merit (increasing your chances of having a better next life).

Some monks on vacation from Chiang Mai in Thailand. Kind of funny to see monks cruising around with camcorders. We saw a similar group of tourist monks in Inle, not sure if it was the same group.
This was a compassion mandala the monks made here in Portland a week ago. They do the intricate colored sand work. Then sweep it up and let all that focused compassion blow away in the wind at the river.

Buddhist Missionary Society, Jackson Heights
The Buddhist Missionary Society is in the process of purchasing a new building for its temple. As of now, large events like Thingyan are held at nearby P.S. 222. The monks have their own table, people still pray around it and serve them throughout their meal, but the atmosphere is decidedly different than the more formal temple in Brooklyn.

At least thats what he seemed to be doing. I watched him for a time but it was a little hard to tell whether he was praying or just doing some very thorough sight seeing. In either case he didn't move far from that spot for the 20 minutes while I was passing through.
