This was taken in Tibet in Oct 2001. This is the traditional debate between monks at the Sera Monastery in Lhasa

Photo taken from the doorway (given permission from a monk) with no flash and low light: Camera set on 3200 ISO speed and difficult not to get noise.

The Songzhanling Monastery - in Zhongdian in Chinese Yunna, just south of Tibet - is the largest in Yunnan. It was originlly built in the 17th century by the Fifth Great Lama, and became a theocratic centre of power. It was destroyed in 1949 and rebuilt by the locals. It remains a religious college and home to many tibetan and indian monks.

I was deliberately looking for the Monk Parakeets during this trip; a resident of Freeport had previously told me where they roosted--although I did not find them there that time, I bookmarked the coordinates. To my surprise and delight, they were right there this time! They were settling down for bed and did not appreciate our disturbance.

Here are the monks in crimson robes which I promised earlier you'd get to see...

Ok, it's subtle, but there's a monk with a strong jaw under a tall hood.
