Monk flat-iron skiffs were designed by the famed Pacific Northwest designer Edwin Monk, the plans for which are contained in his 1934 book "Small Boats". These skiffs are colloquially known as "flat-irons" or just "flatties" since that's what they look like when viewed directly from above - the flat-iron (sometimes known as a "sad-iron", don't ask me why) used by our grandparents to press clothes. We build these types of boats during the first semester of each year-long class.

'Monks' Cave' at Charles Hill Battery. This building, not strictly a cave, was at the nearest landing point from Inchcolm Island and was purportedly used as a goods store for the crossing to the St Augustine Abbey. The small opening could have been used for a messaging lamp.
Fixtures for a war-time submarine boom can be seen in the water with the modern Braefoot LPG terminal pier behind.

Activists marked the 12th anniversary of the house arrest of Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi by protests outside Chinese embassies worldwide, this one in London.
The demonstration was accompanied by a small number of monks, who were at the forefront of the recent anti government protests in Burma.
Like myself, these Monk parakeets are immigrants to the USA, although they originated in Argentina. Many live together near Brooklyn College.
However, today I went up to the Bronx and investigated the other concentration in NYC, which live in Pelham Bay Park, where they have built huge nests in the softball field floodlights. Unfortunately I couldn't get very close today, as the park was full of people.

A novice monk stands on the banks of the Mae Ping river in Chiang Mai, while watching the construction of a float being built for a river parade, on the first night of the Loi Krathong festival held annual throughout Thailand. The traditional northern Thai holiday lasts three days, and is meant to ask forgiveness and show respect to the river and sky through prayer and the releasing of lanterns.

Monk Bar is the largest and most ornate of the bars, it dates from the early 14th century. It was a self-contained fortress, with each floor capable of being defended. On the front of the bar is an arch supporting a gallery, including 'murder-holes' through which missiles and boiling water could be rained down upon attackers.
Monk Bar has the city’s only working portcullis, in use until 1970. Like the other main gateways, Monk Bar originally had a barbican on the front. This was demolished in 1825.
The rooms above the gateway have had various uses over the years, including as a home and as a jail for rebellious Catholics in the 16th century.

A snowy Monks Risborough on 24th January 2013 produces only a single passenger buying a ticket for the 08.12 Princess Risborough to Aylesbury. Class 121, 121034 (55034) can just be seen approaching in the background.
Monks fishing house is where the monks from the nearby Cong abbey fished the river from the little house. Legend has it that the monks had a clever plan for catching the trout and salmon by fixing a net in the river below and connecting the net to a line attached to a bell in the abbey kitchen. When a fish was netted the bell rang to inform Brother Cook that he might include fresh fish on the menu for the day.

We've been seeing a lot of Monk Parakeets all over South Florida lately. This one was seen in the parking lot of a shopping center in Boynton Beach, FL on 5/30/09.

Wandering the old, walled city in Chiang Mai, I saw these novices trying to make a food decision at the food cart. This is a 1-image HDR. Their robes are a beautiful bright orange color, but when I converted it to Artistic BW I decided to leave it that way.
A young monk being given a ride... they seem so relax and well balance, even as cars and lorries zoom passed them.
I took this from my moving car.... we passed them by earlier on and I instructed my driver to slow down for them to catch up and allow them to pass by us.
I reckon it's better to take from the car, as the car move slowly... rather than me standing in the middle of the road and risk being run down by some mad truck driver!
Only problem was the sun was slightly in front of me at an angle!
