Monks of Ladakh

This was captured in Thikse Monastery. The Monks were praying, the room was almost dark.

The Monks allowed me to enter during their prayer, I tried to capture some moments . The only light was the light from the main door and reflection from Golden Buddha.

Northern Thailand Day 3

Walking barefoot is a specific discipline practiced by certain members. It is considered a very practical and natural way to practice fulltime mindfulness. Traditionally, one does not wear shoes within the sanctuary buildings. By also going barefoot outside, the practice can be seen as an extension of expanding sacred space beyond the walls of the sanctuary. Among many Boundless Way practitioners, going barefoot whenever possible is a form of practice that keeps them in touch with reality at all times.

My cousin becoming a monk. It was a beautiful ceremony.

It's a celebration at TigelfƔh abbey, as the monks carry out a procession past the abbey and through the adjoining town.

They carry their most holy relic, and the one which attracts the most pilgrims, a fragment of the holy grail.

As they pass the abbey, in the background can be seen the window which was created to celebrate this most holy of relics.

See the abbey for real as part of a larger collaboration at STEAM 2013.

The mummified remains of monk Loung Por Daeng which is on display at Wat Kunaram in Baan Saket on the island of Samui, Thailand.

Please view LARGE on black

Loung Por Daeng, born in 1894,was a well-respected family man within the local community on Koh Samui, and first become ordained as a monk when he was in his early twenties. He exited the monkhood, married and had six children, a few of whom still live on the island today. Upon reaching fifty, Loung Por Daeng, whose full name is Phra Khru Samathakittikhun (Dang Piyasilo), decided to dedicate the latter part of his life to Buddhism and was reordained as a monk in 1944.

Loung Por Daeng died in 1974. He is still sitting in the original cross-legged meditation position as when he died, and his skin is very white in contrast to mummies that have been specifically embalmed where the skin usually takes on a darker tone. When his eyes fell into his head (don't be squeamish), the monks at the temple fitted him with some sunglasses (Raybans, of course!) and he still wears the traditional orange robes of monkhood.

He remains in impeccable condition considering he died 33 years ago.

A young monk. Taken at Wat Patum (Near Siam Square, Bangkok).

At the Lifeng Temple, I had the privilege to assist to the monk's prayer (reciting their mantras), and took that picture just after they endend. They seemed happy and surprised to see a foreigner there !

The Monk parakeet, Also known as the Quaker parrot, has been in Texas for years (among other places) but not many know that unless they look up into the trees, which a lot of people just don't. Photographers do, so they see a lot of things that 'ordinary' people wouldn't.

I know I have frequented areas where they were, I was right in their feeding grounds and I had been shooting birds for a couple of years until I heard an unusual sound in the tree above me. I had to duck too because they were, well, you know, all around me.

Now I know, then I had no clue.

They usually nest in electrical towers.

Taken at White Rock Lake in Dallas, Texas one early morning as the sun came up. There's a LOT there, I don't know how many, but they are usually in flocks of at least 20, then you may see more come and go. I am guessing that there are around 200 birds, I could be off by 100 or so either way. :)

Scientific name: Myiopsitta monachus

Monks are very present in Myanmar, between 400000-500000 monks in a country of about 50 million people.

happy monk diptych

I cannot recall the last time I made a diptych image. It has been a while but I couldn't think of a better way to share this image. Photography is great but there are times when a single image cannot share the impact of a scene the way it is perceived by the human eye. This statue at the Buddhist temple in Niagara Falls, Ontario was an object that could not convey the impact it made on me with just one image. I was drawn to the statue by its setting near the gate into the temple compound and the expression the artist gave to the monk. A diptych was the only way to share those two elements adequately through a photo.
