On November 5, 1938 the Mohawk movie theater opened for business in North Adams, Massachusetts. Hailed as a ”Flagship Loews Family Theatre”, for many years it served as a one of the anchor businesses and landmark destinations in the downtown area. But in 1991, it was forced to close its doors, a victim of the increased popularity of more modern, multi-plex cinemas that were located in large suburban malls far from the inner city. The story is typical of the countless towns across America whose downtown areas underwent a severe decline in the 1970’s and 80’s and today are still struggling to remain viable. In North Adams, there is an active and ongoing effort to revitalize the downtown and to preserve the Mohawk as an arts and entertainment center. One can only hope that this very lovely and important historical building will be saved from the wrecker’s ball and will continue to serve the residents of North Adams

The streaks of car's headlights on I-40 zooming past the once popular dome shaped Meteor City Trading Post along historic Route 66 in Arizona east of Winslow. I illuminated the structure with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 during the exposure. This was part of a three-night trip with night photographer Mike Cooper, exploring the remote corners of the desert.

New York Central 3001 is a 4-8-2 Mohawk (Mountain)-type steam locomotive built in October 1940 by American Locomotive Company (ALCO) of Schenectady, New York as a member of the L-3a class for the New York Central Railroad (NYC). Normally known as Mountain types, the NYC 4-8-2 steam locomotives were dubbed as Mohawk types after the Mohawk River, which ran alongside NYC's famed Water Level Route. Built for dual-service work, No. 3001 was used to haul both freight and passenger trains on the NYC system until being retired in February 1957.

I took this photo of 3001 during a 2022 visit to the National New York Central Railroad Museum in Elkhart, IN. Recently the big ALCO was purchased from the museum by the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society who's intent is to restore the locomotive to operational status. I wish them success in that massive undertaking. Hopefully I will get an opportunity some day to see this Mountain class monster in action.

On March 19, 2018, in Pattersonville, NY, crossing the Mohawk River Bridge is an eastbound manifest led by CSX GE AC4400CW 353. In May 2021, this locomotive was sent to Wabtec in Fort Worth, TX, for a complete overhaul into a CM44AC with new paint and renumbered to 7254. At the time of this photo, one wouldn’t think the classic YN2 scheme would be rare, but now they are, as CSX drastically purged older power from their roster or rebuilt them.

Niskayuna, New York.

After missing this train earlier in the day by 20 min we drove all the way from Port Henry back here before we caught up with him...and when we finally did a cloud rolled in at the last moment flattening out the brilliant afternoon light. But I still like this shot and want to share it. We had expected this train to be running in a 1x1 DPU configuration and were surprised when it stepped out onto the bridge with a pair of GEs on the point.

This is a 650 loaded unit ethanol train headed for the unloading terminal at CP's ex D&H Kenwood Yard at the Port of Albany. Here they are on crossing the nearly 1100 ft long lattice Warren truss deck bridge over the Mohawk River just below Cohoes Falls from the town of Waterford into Cohoes. This is about MP 9.5 on CP's Colonie Sub, the one time Delaware and Hudson Saratoga Sub mainline.
