On November 5, 1938 the Mohawk movie theater opened for business in North Adams, Massachusetts. Hailed as a âFlagship Loews Family Theatreâ, for many years it served as a one of the anchor businesses and landmark destinations in the downtown area. But in 1991, it was forced to close its doors, a victim of the increased popularity of more modern, multi-plex cinemas that were located in large suburban malls far from the inner city. The story is typical of the countless towns across America whose downtown areas underwent a severe decline in the 1970âs and 80âs and today are still struggling to remain viable. In North Adams, there is an active and ongoing effort to revitalize the downtown and to preserve the Mohawk as an arts and entertainment center. One can only hope that this very lovely and important historical building will be saved from the wreckerâs ball and will continue to serve the residents of North Adams
