The ambient light sensor is used in two ways: brightness modulation on the LCD as well as the backlight behind the keyboard.
An ATTiny13 microcontroller drives a 4-pin common-anode RGB LED, using software generated Pulse-width modulation.
I built this as a toy for my (then) 3yo son, who christened it his "Light Up Thingy".
It was a fun learning experience for our 4th graders as we saw them toil from scratch till they performed on stage. The theme was 'How we express ourselves'. The unit on 'Voices' was a complete success as each one of them came up creative and wonderful stories, voice modulations and hand made puppets all by themselves.

The last photo I'll post of the project, this is how I'm leaving it. Its beautiful.
Pressure sensing Feedback control, tape speed button mod, modulation selectable for delay times, battery and AC adapter operation, 1/4 and 1/8 input/outputs. It was a big-ish project, but well worth the time.
One of the most 'natural' sounding delays around, the DejaVu has not only tap tempo, but a knob to blend crystal clean repeats with bucket brigade analog grunginess. Will self-oscillate, and even loops up to 20 seconds. The loop can slowly decay over time (a rarity in dedicated loop pedals) or repeat forever. Add an expression pedal for control over feedback, and includes a dedicated modulation knob to add shimmer to the delayed notes only. You can even set the knobs so it makes a nice chorus too.
This includes pedal, box and manual. Used less than 5 times, and never gigged. Here's what Seymour says:

While the Deja Vu includes the standard wet/dry blend control and the required delay time adjustment, the DejaVu also features an analog/digital blend control, to achieve any desired level of balance between the warmth of a real Bucket Brigade delay and the squeaky clean sound of a microprocessor-based digital delay. There's also a Feedback control, which allows you to dial in a runaway recycling of your sound in the style of an analog tape echo.
Also features two insert jacks. The Feedback Insert jack allows an external processor to be included in the recycling path, so that the processor's effect becomes more intense at each regeneration, thus continuously morphing the delayed sound as it recycles. The Wet output/loop jack works on the sound after it leaves the recycler, allowing custom tweaking of the overall character of the wet signal before it recombines with the dry signal.

The Deja Vu has Tap Tempo to match the delay time to the tempo of the music. And a Ratio Control that gives you multiple delays for each press of the Tap Tempo footswitch. And a tempo "Heartbeat" red flashing LED to keep everybody honest (or, at least, in time). And a "Modulation" control that lets you add a flange/chorus effect to the time delay.

Both insert jacks can connect directly to a standard volume pedal so the Regen Insert jack becomes a foot control for the level of regeneration, and the Wet Insert jack becomes a foot control for the Wet/Dry mix. And you can connect two foot pedals at the same time for ultimate control of the delayed sound.
No more intriguing palette of silver exists than the Pacific ocean under a gentle cloud cover late in the day. Above Stinson Beach, from the Coastal Trail on Mount Tamalpais, many opportunities exist for such revelations.
