Modulations

"The Jazz Station Big Band proves to be one of the most promising ensembles in Europe. The writing is ingenious and ambitious and the arrangements are deep and meaningful. Their astute use of odd time signatures, metric modulations and free improvisation keeps the listener engaged and interested but there's also great lyricism, simplicity and beauty in their work. Definitely a high quality release from an ensemble that has unlimited potential"

Stanford’s Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) presents its annual Modulations festival in San Francisco—an 8-hour marathon of sound art installations and live electronic music. The event begins with interactive and kinetic sound installations by Trimpin and his students; evolves into a sit-down concert of electronic music; and ends with a dance party, with performances by CCMRA artists and guest performers Wobbly and Sutekh.

ON Semiconductor's AMIS-49587 is an IEC1334 compliant power line carrier modem using spread FSK (S- FSK) modulation for robust low data rate communication over power lines. AMIS-49587 is built around an ARM 7TDMI processor core, and includes the MAC layer. With this robust modulation technique, signals on the power lines can pass long distances. The half-duplex operation is automatically synchronized to the mains, and can be up to 2400 bits/sec. The product configuration is done via its serial interface, which allows the user to concentrate on the development of the application. The AMIS-49587 is implemented in ON Semiconductor mixed signal technology, combining both analog circuitry and digital functionality on the same IC.

What Edmunds.com says

Competing in the hotly contested luxury performance sedan segment, the 2008 Lexus GS 350 offers exceptional value and remains a top choice for those seeking refined manners at a reasonable price.

Pros

Powerful V6 engine, refined suspension, quiet and luxurious cabin, superb fit and finish.

Cons

Minor ergonomic shortcomings, brake modulation could be smoother, taller folks may find headroom lacking.

What's New for 2008

Like other GS models, the 2008 Lexus GS 350 receives minor exterior styling updates, turn signals integrated in the side mirrors, interior trim refinements and restyled gauges.

Armstrong Rubber Comapny Building, a.k.a. Pirelli Tire Building, now the Breuer Hotel (Marcel Breuer and Robert F. Gatje, 1966-1970). A Brutalist statement piece: sure, you could just stack the offices over the research spaces, but why not hoist them? The cladding of precast concrete units, building surface modulation and relief right into the system, is just the icing on the cake. At the top, and along the shear walls at the short ends, Breuer lets the panels become purely decorative, although there's some notion that the diagonal lines represent the prestressed cables in the concrete... or something. They also visually united the upper levels of this building with the low-rise warehouse block, which was unfortunately demolished in 2004 when most of the site was converted into a parking lot.

I have been meaning to do this for some time, taking photographs of the same diatom slide (a small arrangement) using various contrast techniques for comparison. The photos are labelled A-K. I know what each was taken with. Techniques (in no particular order!) include;

dark-ground

phase contrast

Hoffman Modulation Contrast (HMC) (DIY)

DIC

oblique

bright-field

relief contrast (Leica, I think designed for inverted)

variable amplitude contrast (VAC)

All were taken with a x10 Plan Apo objective, apart from a couple eg. Phase which is a x10 Plan Fluor

All are stacked images of 7-11 individual images, and processing is minimal, and broadly the same.

Shifting Paradigms from Mass Production to Mass Customization

Computational architecture and design course

Conventional construction methods all depart from the basic premises of mass production: standardization, modulation and a production line. What these systems developed during the last two centuries fail to take into account are the evolutionary leaps and bounds the manufacturing industry has taken over the last decades. With the introduction of CNC technologies and rapid prototyping machines have altered the paradigms of fabrication forever. It is due to these new tools that it is now possible to create (n) amount of completely unique and different pieces with the same amount of energy and material that is required to create (n) identical pieces. The possibilities for implementation of new forms, textures, materials and languages are infinite due to the versatility that these new tools offer a growing network of architects, designers, fabricators that are integrating them into their professional practices to generate unique and precise objects that respond to countless data and real-life conditions.

The new frontiers of nanobioengineering and nanomedicine involve convergence of nanotechnology with fundamental physical and chemical sciences, engineering and medicine to produce breakthrough approaches for meeting healthcare challenges, such as cancer, neurological disorders, infectious diseases, age-related diseases, addiction, chronic pain, depression and obesity. Engineered nanoplatforms can now be developed for carrying various payloads for new, minimally invasive medical procedures, targeted delivery of multiple therapeutics, enhanced efficacy of existing treatments, and real-time monitoring of disease treatment. This presentation will describe our work on multifunctional polymeric, inorganic and hybrid heterostructured nanoparticles and nanostructures containing multiple imaging (linear and nonlinear optical, photoacoustic, magnetic, radiation, SPECT, PET) and sensing probes. Coupled with targeting capability and therapeutic and genetic payloads, these nanoplatforms provide targeted combined diagnostics and therapy. A major focus of our research is on light-based biotechnology (biophotonics). We have developed optical nanotransformers, which, on demand, convert incident photons in-situ to another wavelength suitable for deep tissue imaging or for affecting a therapy. A new direction for us is brain research and neurophotonics for functional mapping and modulation of brain activities. The talk will end with a discussion of new multidisciplinary opportunities and challenges to overcome.
