The aim of this project is to control the speed of a fan with a control panel in Second Life. To control the motor, a pulse width modulation (PWM) powers the fan. With this method, the speed will be controlled by the mean value of the signal, depending of its duty cycle.

"The Jazz Station Big Band proves to be one of the most promising ensembles in Europe. The writing is ingenious and ambitious and the arrangements are deep and meaningful. Their astute use of odd time signatures, metric modulations and free improvisation keeps the listener engaged and interested but there's also great lyricism, simplicity and beauty in their work. Definitely a high quality release from an ensemble that has unlimited potential"

Acrylics phase 1; the lightest local color is painted in acrylics. No tonal modulation, just flat color. The darkest darks are painted with black acrylics or waterproof India ink.
Art was until very recently a search for visual harmony. Through my own personal investigation I have tried to develop my understanding of portraiture in more detail, while producing my own interpretations on the historical mediums of painted art. I have always been fascinated with the human face and the different variations of it, whether it be skin tones or individual facial features and subsequently the way in which paint can be infused to create almost a new life on a canvas. I initiated my personal investigation by exploring a range of art that portrayed the subject's idiosyncrasies through the extravagant makeup, the style of dress or demeanour conveyed through expressions of the subject. I was particularly intrigued by Alan Coulson's piece "Latoya", Coulson effectively employs finely controlled paint, colour and lighting, in which the modulation of tones and detailed approach brings both style and subject together. I found the personal nature of his paintings to be distinctive due to the simplicity yet effectiveness in the way in which his aim is expressed. Consequently I have tried to bring out this same technique in my own work . In my current work brush strokes are not as evident and details in skin colouring are very particular to create a realistic look. I feel this conjures expression on the subjects face making it more relatable and in turn is why I have tried to incorporate a photo realistic style into my paintings much like the work of painters like Coulson.
Mike demonstrates how dimming LEDs uses pulse width modulation. So the intervals between pules of light is just increased to dim lights down. Learn more here: bit.ly/uO0ec5

Georges Seurat (1859-91). Oil on canvas. Around 1888-90.
This painting is a striking demonstration of Seurat's pointillist technique. The modulation of light and shadow on the wall is achieved with the use of small dots of pure colour juxtaposed in varying concentration and intensity.
The young model depicted by Seurat was his mistress, Madeleine Knobloch, who bore him two sons. This painting thus takes on a very personal meaning.

Stanford’s Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) presents its annual Modulations festival in San Francisco—an 8-hour marathon of sound art installations and live electronic music. The event begins with interactive and kinetic sound installations by Trimpin and his students; evolves into a sit-down concert of electronic music; and ends with a dance party, with performances by CCMRA artists and guest performers Wobbly and Sutekh.
