ModelKits - Direct traces #12

I never completed this kit. The artwork on this one is interesting in that it seems to depict the Cobra racing on a dirt road. Did anyone ever rally one of these? I kind of doubt it, but it was a nice kit.

#TrekWars: Something I worked on most of the day today, with some help from my brother-in-law Paul Eric, here in my micro-ILM-esque studio. Good way to stay inside and stay warm on a freezing day. Also a good way to piss off two (possibly three) groups of #scifi #geeks..... #StarTrek #StarWars #mashup #crossOver

An f/x ode to one of my favorite sci-fi movies growing up in the 80s: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Probably one of the best Trek movies in all the series. Definitely Shatner and cast at their best. And probably a much better film than the reboot a couple of years ago. To me, there will only ever be one Khan, and that's Ricardo Montalban... but hey, I'm an old fart, so I'm biased. Shot this video with my old 1990s MPC model kit of the Enterprise.

This is a life-size sculpture of me as a pre-assembly model kit. It is made out of fibre glass, resin and plastic.

2008 the tenth anniversary of the year that I properly became a sculptor and this sculpture was the starting point. Although, technically speaking I started making the moulds for it in 1997.

A couple of years after I first exhibited this piece I started getting emails and phone calls from friends asking if I was exhibiting it in different galleries all over the place. It turned out that a few other artists had made similar sculptures after I had made mine. I suppose there was a bit of a zeitgeist thing going on. I'd be interested to know if anyone had made something similar before 1998.

Ironically, 'And When I'm A Man' is probably the largest sculpture that I have made to date. Most of my current sculptural work tends to be made up of small detailed components that grow outwards or upwards.

As well as being made from 12 separate body casts of myself (a self portrait, I suppose) 'And When I'm A Man' is based on the type of model kit that I used to buy as a child. When creating the piece I was interested in childhood perceptions of adulthood and the role that toys played in this, as I noticed that many figurative toys were that of adult characters.

Date: 1998

Dimensions: 230 x 170 x 18 cm

Materials: fibreglass, resin & plastic.

This build up was from an original issue 1957 Revell kit that started as a minor glue bomb. I re-fitted the multi-piece body and then sanded out the casting flaws. It is spray painted in a green metallic similar to the original plastic colour. The tonneau cover is from a later issue of this kit and the wheels are from an AMT 57 Hardtop kit as I did not care for the plastic ones that were offered with the kit from Revell. The box has typical great art work as so many models by Revell did at that time. Inside are the original instructions and decals to replicate the box picture. The worst part of this kit was it was first issued in 1957 as a 4 door country squire and then they butchered the dies in 1959 to offer this Ranchero body style. As a result the doors are not to scale in length as they should be longer for a 2 door vehicle. The Ranchero dies after 2 editions were butchered again to offer a chopped top version so don't be looking to see this kit anytime soon. If you want the very first one in the Country Squire body style start saving your change they are not cheap if you can find one.
