At last all the pieces come together: The tugboat model, the base, the display case, the nameplate and the backdrop.
Exhausting, but the results are worth it!
The problem with building out a 50 year old model kit is that you really, REALLY want to protect it from harm. Plus, you want it to look great on display.
We tried finding an acrylic case large enough to house the approximately 2' long x 1' tall completed tugboat, but nothing was available locally.
Internet to the rescue! We custom ordered a case from Collectible Grading Authority, and they did an awesome job!
I had to steal the brass railing from another deck in my box of parts.
That deck has seen better days!
Once I had cleaned up the original brass wires, it was time to take the new posts and reassemble the railing.
I used yet another lower cabin deck from my parts collection to re-thread and bend the railing back into shape. This way, I didn't have to worry about scratching up my finished deck assembly.
This window is at the back of 'the Dutch-looking building' on Northgate Street and is on the north side of Great Yarmouth Row 5, Split Gutter Row.
The completed assembly is getting the glosscote treatment.
I debated whether or not to mask off the windows before doing this, but I ultimately decided not to. I'm glad, because it gave the windows a semi-frosted decorative appearance.

This is a paper mock-up of the nameplate we wanted to make for the display base. I wanted to use a retro-style typeface that resembled the '50s aesthetic.

With roof and rear wall removed (Just for you Colin) The green twiggy thing represents the tomato plant which Skipper Nick Walker grows in the real boat, and yes the chart on the table is of the Firth of Clyde.
Built as S-27 in 1939 by Lurssen and entered into German navy service the same year. After the German civil war it served President Otto Kahn until decommissioned and stored at Lurssen in 1941. The boat was purchased privately and refitted in 1943 with the new Tesla & Benz motor and updated civilian equipment and comforts. In this configuration the Victoria made the one famous mission from Spain to Antarctica in 1943-44 under the command of Anthony Powell with a civilian crew. After The Fall it was brought back to Germany and stored. In 1975 she was restored and placed in the Deutsches Schiffahrtsmuseum. I’ve seen the movie a hundred times, read Powell’s book as often and was able to visit the museum in person with my school.
The model is scratch-built from cardboard, paper and paper clips mainly (I enjoy a stupid challenge: the turret is the container from a gum ball machine prize) the figures are two-part epoxy and I think I’m getting a bit better at figure sculpting.

The Letters IMBC refer to Irvine Model Boat Club, lets hope she does'nt have to do too much towing of our club boats !
No I did not build this one, she was ready to sail when I got her, and I am very impressed with her performance. Pity about the photo quality but it's not easy holding the transmitter and focussing the camera at the same time.
Unfortunately the wind was too strong and the "Red Witch" sank with all hands. Owner David waded in and soon retrieved her. Hopefully after drying out she will live to sail again.
The Scottish Maritime Museum in Irvine are progressing well with their new outdoor model boating pond, this shot shows the waterproof liner being fitted,. The local model club lads are getting excited and preparing their boats for the opening.

The SS Allenwood was built and launched in December 1920 by Ernest Wright of John Wright & Co Shipyards, Tuncurry, NSW. The vessel was a coastal trader owned by Allen Taylor's North Coast Shipping Co. with her prime role that of carrying timber and supplies to the residents of towns along the coast of NSW.
The 398-ton, 147-foot twin-screw wooden steamer was easily recognizable by her twin funnels.
During WW2 the Allenwood was requisitioned by the Department of Navy and became the HMAS Allenwood, after the war reverting to its former role..
Vessels like the SS Allenwood regularly faced hazardous sea conditions as well as perilous bar crossings up and down the NSW coast. Many such vessels were lost in their performance of these roles and many mariners died.
Somehow the twin screw powered SS Allenwood managed to survive the elements until one foggy night on the 14th September 1951 in a powerful storm the vessel skippered by Captain Boutrup finally succumbed to nature's fury. Unable to avoid being washed onto Birdie Beach, near Norah Head on the NSW Central Coast the life of the Allenwood ended.
Soon after she was declared a wreck and put out to tender for salvage. Marine engineer JP Scott of Warners Bay was the successful bidder. He paid £601 for the salvage rights. He used the timber to build a house at Warners Bay.
After big storms when sand is removed from the wreck site the superstructure of the boat can still be seen today.

Birdie Beach, is in Munmorah State Conservation Area being bordered by the rugged cliffs of Wybung Head to the north and Budgewoi Peninsula to its south. Rarely busy, Birdie Beach is a great spot for surfing and snorkelling though its best known as a clothing-optional beach.

I asked that Grok Ai create a realistic portrayal of the model in a stormy sea. In some renditions I asked it to add voices to the rendered image but had to specifically ask that it use an Australian accent.
Alastair's mini tug struggling with my Vic 32 model. Difficult to get started but once moving all was well. Luckily a wind free day!
I recreated the box art for a decorative backdrop to the display case. I think it turned out great! I had FedExKinko's print this and mount it to foamcore board.
