Another view of my old puffer model as she cruises around the pond at the Scottish Maritime Museum. As an aside the original boiler from the real boat is to be found in the Linthouse building of the Museum.
Just inside the main gates of the Scottish Maritime Museum can be found the new outdoor model boating pond.This has been eagerly awaited by the local model enthusiasts and we hope to make full use of it in the future.

During the inter-war period the Underground Group, that also owned the General Buses , and the successor organisation after 1933, London Transport, issued a series of leaflets in which were collected series of newspaper adverts. These were often commissioned, as were panel and full size posters, from various artists and designers. This series of seven, showing activities and destinations on a typical London Sunday are by artist Arthur Watts. It is worth recalling that for many decades British Sunday's were markedly quieter days than today; most shops and businesses were closed and the day was intended for religious observance, family events or cultural activities such as museums and art galleries.
The seven adverts feature; Petticoat Lane Market via Aldgate East station, Speakers Corner via Marble Arch station, Regents Park via the station of that name, model boats on the Round Pond in Kensington Gardens via High Street Kensington station, the Victoria & Albert Museum via South Kensington, Hyde Park via Hyde Park Corner station and the Natural History Museum, again via South Kensington. The artist depicts these busy scenes, and with vignettes, and it must be rememebered that the illustrations could contain depictions that conform to the contemporary social attitudes and not those we would expect today. This copy of the leaflet was acquired some years ago via a dealer having been surplus from the LT publicity files. It was likely printed by the Curwen Press in Plaistow, London.
Arthur George Watts DSO (1883 - 1935) was a noted illustrator and artist who was widely commissioned for periodicals and advertising. Watts, who had won the DSO for bravery during wartime service in the Royal Naval Reserve, was killed in a crash of a KLM flight in the Italian Alps on 20 July 1935.
Basic, simple and almost indestructible , this is the design I used for the models to be used by the kids in the Maritime Museum pond. Of course if they couldn't break them they regularly manage to fill them with water by picking them up by one end. Just can't win!
For anyone interested in the workings, 6volt sealed lead acid battery, mabucci 385 motor, 27 MHz 2 function radio, 35mm prop and shielded rudder. Fair turn of speed and very manoeuvrable both forward and astern. So far I have built five of these little beasts, one day I will do one with movable car ramps!

Has an as yet unidentified leak (?beside prop shaft) so needs bilges drained regularly to avoid sinking!! Now stripped of electrics and scrapped.
Semi scale model of the vintage puffer Spartan, the original being in the care of the Scottish Maritime Museum. The model is one of a series of small models I built some years ago for the museum to allow visiting kids (and adults) to play at being skipper. This was a test run in the museum's outdoor pond after some repair work had been completed.
Operation Pluto (Pipe-Lines Under The Ocean) was a Second World War operation by British engineers, oil companies and armed forces to construct undersea oil pipelines under the English Channel between England and France in support of Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of Normandy in June 1944.

About Robert Heffron Murray....
Robert Heffron Murray was born Wednesday, October 18, 1881, in Washington Heights, Cook County, Illinois, the son of George William Murray and Cora May (Heffron) Murray. After attending the Lewis Institute (forerunner of Illinois Institute of Technology) in Chicago for secondary school education, Robert enrolled and later graduated from The University of Chicago on Tuesday, June 14, 1904. Robert married Sue Mary Horton on Saturday, November 4, 1905, in Richmond, Virginia; no children resulted from their union. Sue was a childhood neighbor of Robert and the daughter of Horace E. Horton, the founder of Chicago Bridge and Iron. In 1917, Robert joined the United States Army and was commissioned as a Captain in the Army Reserves. He was elevated to Major when ordered to report for deployment to Europe during World War I. Upon return from active duty in Europe, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, and was therefore commonly referred to as Colonel Murray. He started developing Sunset Hill Farm in 1934, which is located in the northwest quarter of Section 25 in Liberty Township, Porter County, Indiana. Leroy "Pete" Hanrahan, who served as Colonel Murray's farm manager from 1934 until his death in 1952, was instrumental in assisting Colonel Murray develop Sunset Hill Farm. Today, Sunset Hill Farm operates as a county park. After Robert's wife Sue died on Monday, February 26, 1962, he remarried Elizabeth (Linn) Allen, the widow of John B. Allen, on Saturday, January 11, 1964, in Liberty Township, Porter County, Indiana. Elizabeth, commonly referred to as Bips, was a member of the Chicago Board of Education and the grandniece of Jane Addams, a very well known early Twentieth Century progressive and the founder of Hull House in Chicago. Colonel Murray died on Saturday, October 28, 1972, in Valparaiso, Porter County, Indiana. Elizabeth "Bips" Murray died on Saturday, June 14, 1997, in Washington, DC.

With over 3075 T37 Racing Sloops sailing across the world, T37 fleets have emerged around the US to bring like-minded sailors and racers together for competitive and fun racing! Whether match-racing with just two boats or sailing with 20 others, T37 sailing is fun for sailors of all ages and experiences.
Some of the biggest T37 fleets are located in the Pacific Northwest; one of the fastest growing of these fleets is the Port Townsend, Washington fleet. Since its formation only a few years ago, the fleet has grown from zero boats to 43 boats.
Because the T37 Racing Sloop is a one-design class, sailors do not have to buy expensive boats or fancy sails to 'get an edge'; instead, T37 racing is about strategy and model boat racing skills.

There was some sort of model boat regatta - race, competition- at the lake on Saturday. This entrant team sure had a lot of paraphernalia.
I was determined to have at least one model of Scottish road, rail, air and water travel. Anyscale models very helpfully fulfilled the water aspect with this uniquely Scottish, manually operated, turntable ferry. This wonderful 1:76 scale, resin set just requires assembly and painting. It thankfully prevented my having to scratch build a CalMac ferry in that scale.
I have painted this in the same style as the MV Glenachulish, the world’s last manual turntable ferry, and featured in the linked video, by Tom Scott. The model however was created by Anyscale as a generic turntable ferry, representative of the type. -https://youtu.be/H2ZBSFiuWIo?si=
At one time turntable ferries have operated at 11 water crossings around Scotland. Whilst the MV Glenachulish is the last active, previously these types were found operating at; Ballachulish, Bonawe, Corran, Cuan, Dornie, Kessock, Kyleakin, Kylerhea, Kylesku (the most northerly), Scalpay and Strome. Before bridges these vessels provided a critical inter-island link for vehicles and foot passengers alike.
I’ve named this “MV Western Spinner”, she’s seen both during crossing and at the slipway, carrying then offloading a Police car and Royal Mail Postbus, both Land Rovers.
After a lot of fiddly work on the stanchion, handrails and rigging she now looks presentable once again
