During the inter-war period the Underground Group, that also owned the General Buses , and the successor organisation after 1933, London Transport, issued a series of leaflets in which were collected series of newspaper adverts. These were often commissioned, as were panel and full size posters, from various artists and designers. This series of seven, showing activities and destinations on a typical London Sunday are by artist Arthur Watts. It is worth recalling that for many decades British Sunday's were markedly quieter days than today; most shops and businesses were closed and the day was intended for religious observance, family events or cultural activities such as museums and art galleries.
The seven adverts feature; Petticoat Lane Market via Aldgate East station, Speakers Corner via Marble Arch station, Regents Park via the station of that name, model boats on the Round Pond in Kensington Gardens via High Street Kensington station, the Victoria & Albert Museum via South Kensington, Hyde Park via Hyde Park Corner station and the Natural History Museum, again via South Kensington. The artist depicts these busy scenes, and with vignettes, and it must be rememebered that the illustrations could contain depictions that conform to the contemporary social attitudes and not those we would expect today. This copy of the leaflet was acquired some years ago via a dealer having been surplus from the LT publicity files. It was likely printed by the Curwen Press in Plaistow, London.
Arthur George Watts DSO (1883 - 1935) was a noted illustrator and artist who was widely commissioned for periodicals and advertising. Watts, who had won the DSO for bravery during wartime service in the Royal Naval Reserve, was killed in a crash of a KLM flight in the Italian Alps on 20 July 1935.

HMS Kelly (pennant number F01) was a K-class destroyer of the British Royal Navy, and flotilla leader of her class. She served through the early years of the Second World War; in Home Waters, off Norway and in the Mediterranean. Throughout her service, Kelly was commanded by Lord Louis Mountbatten. She was lost in action in 1941 during the Battle of Crete. In addition, Mountbatten served as commander (Captain (D)) of the 5th Destroyer Flotilla.
Great turnout of spectators for our display at the Scottish Maritime Museum on Saturday as part of the Making Waves festival. Unfortunately we were rained off on Sunday afternoon.
Operation Pluto (Pipe-Lines Under The Ocean) was a Second World War operation by British engineers, oil companies and armed forces to construct undersea oil pipelines under the English Channel between England and France in support of Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of Normandy in June 1944.
This former garage is now used to house the model boats exhibition at Bletchley Park. The garage was originally used to house Sir Herbert Leon's two Rolls Royce cars.

Also on the boating lake was this little paddler. It is a model of the PS Wilton Castle, a pleasure boat built around 1902 that used to work the River Wye. (The 13c Wilton Castle stands on the River Wye.)
The venue here for the Barry Model Boat Club activity is the lake at The Knap, Barry, UK.

The Irvine model boat club were asked to lay on a display at the Scottish Maritime Museum this weekend, Unfortunately only three of us were able to bring models but we laid on a reasonably good selection for the public.The Lifeboat in the background is the ill fated Longhope Lifeboat "TGB"

This imposing model warship in Central Park's Conservatory Water is a replica of a ship from the Confederate navy during the Civil War. It was very detailed, from the masts to cannons, right down to the Confederate national flag - a white flag with the infamous Southern Cross battle flag design in the upper left hand corner.
The battle flag was never the official flag of the Confederate States of America.

This model called a Commodore, from a German kit I believe, was given to me some years ago in a rather dilapidated condition.Finding some spare radio and propulsion bits and pieces I have got it up to running condition so it's off to the pond for some trials. If satisfactory I may then refurbish the structure to make it a little tidier.
Another view of my old puffer model as she cruises around the pond at the Scottish Maritime Museum. As an aside the original boiler from the real boat is to be found in the Linthouse building of the Museum.
Just inside the main gates of the Scottish Maritime Museum can be found the new outdoor model boating pond.This has been eagerly awaited by the local model enthusiasts and we hope to make full use of it in the future.

Basic, simple and almost indestructible , this is the design I used for the models to be used by the kids in the Maritime Museum pond. Of course if they couldn't break them they regularly manage to fill them with water by picking them up by one end. Just can't win!
For anyone interested in the workings, 6volt sealed lead acid battery, mabucci 385 motor, 27 MHz 2 function radio, 35mm prop and shielded rudder. Fair turn of speed and very manoeuvrable both forward and astern. So far I have built five of these little beasts, one day I will do one with movable car ramps!

Semi scale model of the vintage puffer Spartan, the original being in the care of the Scottish Maritime Museum. The model is one of a series of small models I built some years ago for the museum to allow visiting kids (and adults) to play at being skipper. This was a test run in the museum's outdoor pond after some repair work had been completed.
