Harlingen honours its writers. Of course, a lot of attention is paid to Simon Vestdijk (there’s, for instance, an Anton Wachter (one of his characters) statue. And also to the stadsverslaggever (city journalist) Rikus Poes (Rikus Cat), the aka of Hendricus Attema, who worked between 1952 and 1978 for the Harlinger Courant. He’s using the tools of his trade here: a little notebook and a Kaptein Mobylette moped with the letters PERS (press) and a cat depicted on the obligatory yellow plate on the front fender of his moped.
In his time, journalists and photojournalists were still inhabiting separate professions. If this wasn't the case, it would have been great to see Poes wielding a big Graflex Speed Graphic in the design language of sculpturer Henk Zielstra. By the way: later in his career, Poes sometimes had a compact 35mm camera with him.

Retour à la maison
Kampot (Cambodge) - Photo prise, comme la suivante, dans les salines de Kampot, mais avec une lumière moins flamboyante.
J’avais croisé ce couple quelques heures plus tôt alors qu’il travaillait dans les salines, affecté au ramassage du sel.
J'ai retrouvé cette homme et son épouse sur cette piste alors qu'ils rentraient chez eux après une journée de travail bien remplie.

I had met this couple a few hours earlier while working in the salt flats, collecting salt.
I found him on this track when he was returning home after a busy day at work.

(difficile pour moi d'être réactive et très présente en ce moment... emploi du temps très rempli, entre boulot et handball, et un blessé-tout-frais-plâtré à gérer depuis hier soir (blessure de handball)... mais vacances (scolaires) bientôt !)
Vang-Vieng (Laos) - Au Laos, il est désormais rare de voir des buffles tirer des charrettes. Pour de petites remorques, la mobylette les a remplacés. Même dans ce pays d’Asie considéré comme l’un des plus pauvres du monde, les choses changent rapidement avec la mainmise des Chinois sur l’économie du pays. Les modes de vies s’en trouvent profondément modifiés.
Ce paysan croisé sur la route des rizière semble ne pas être influencé par la présence chinoise. Lui, semble s’inspirer du Vietnam.
Laotian transportation
Vang-Vieng (Laos) - In Laos, it is now rare to see buffaloes pulling carts. For small trailers, the moped replaced them. Even in this Asian country considered to be one of the poorest in the world, things are changing quickly with the Chinese take over the country's economy. Lifestyles are profoundly changed.
This farmer crossed on the rice paddy road does not seem to be influenced by the Chinese presence. He seems to take his inspiration from Vietnam.
Cai Bé (Vietnam) - Nous sommes tombés par hasard sur un rassemblement de cerfs-volants. Personne, même pas à l’hôtel, ne nous avait parlé de cet événement festif. Il a juste fallu lever les yeux au ciel pour voir une nuée d’objets hétéroclites en vol plus ou moins stationnaire. Il fallait s’attendre à voir un tel spectacle, à un moment ou à un autre, car on accorde à l’Asie (probablement à la Chine), l’origine de la pratique du cerf-volant.
S'il y avait un embouteillage de panthères, de dragons et autres poissons volants dans le ciel, il en était de même avec les scooters au sol. Si les Vietnamiens ne peuvent se séparer de leur smartphone, il en est de même avec leur mobylettes ou scooters, sans lesquels ils ne semblent plus pouvoir se déplacer. Ils assistaient au spectacle, assis sur leur deux roues, filmant et photographiant dans cette position. En conséquence, j’ai mis à pied plus de 20 minutes pour franchir un mur de scooters pour rejoindre l’aire d’envol des cerfs-volants.

Cai Be (Vietnam) - We stumbled upon a kite gathering by chance. No one, not even at the hotel, had told us about this festive event. All we had to do was look up to the sky to see a cloud of diverse objects in more or less stationary flight. We had to expect to see such a spectacle, at one time or another, because Asia (probably China) is believed to be the origin of the practice of kite flying.
If there was a traffic jam of panthers and other flying dragons in the sky, the same was true of the scooters on the ground. If the Vietnamese cannot part with their smartphones, the same is true of their mopeds or scooters, without which they no longer seem to be able to get around. They watched the spectacle, seated on their two-wheelers, filming and photographing in this position. As a result, it took me more than 20 minutes to cross a wall of scooters to reach the kite launch area.
Vinh Long (Vietnam) – Tranquillement installé en face à siroter un café glacé, j’observe les pauvres gars qui apportent et déchargent de lourds sacs contenant ce qui me semble être du riz. Ils arrivent en mobylette transportant parfois plus d’une dizaine de sacs. Ensuite, sans que les femmes qui visiblement dirigent le magasin ne leur accordent la moindre attention, ils les entassent au fond du hangar et repartent dégoulinant de sueur. Durant les 20 minutes pendant lesquelles j’ai assisté à ces scènes, les manutentionnaires-livreurs ont fait au moins quatre voyages, chacun.
Techniquement, j’ai réglé mon objectif pour avoir une netteté suffisante sur tout le champ de l’image. Aussi, j’ai du mal à m’expliquer le « mouvement » dans les mains du manutentionnaire, alors que ma vitesse était calée sur le 1/125.
En principe, à cette vitesse, des mains, même agitées, sont figées. Si j’ai du mal à trouver une explication logique, ce mouvement, s’il n’était pas intentionnel, ne me gêne pas particulièrement. Mais il m'interroge.
It's heavy !
Vinh Long (Vietnam) – Relaxedly seated across the street, sipping an iced coffee, I watch the poor guys bringing in and unloading heavy bags containing what I think is rice. They arrive on mopeds, sometimes carrying more than ten bags. Then, without the women who obviously run the store paying them the slightest attention, they pile them into the back of the shed and leave dripping with sweat. During the 20 minutes I witnessed these scenes, the delivery handlers made at least four trips each.
Technically, I adjusted my lens to have sufficient sharpness across the entire image field. I struggle to explain the "movement" in the handler's hands, even though my shutter speed was set to 1/125. Normally, at that speed, hands, even if they're moving, are frozen. Although I struggle to find a logical explanation, this movement, even if it was not intentional, does not particularly bother me.

frustré d'être arrivé trop tard hier au rassemblement de Motobécane de Pluvigner, je voulais au moins dessiner une Mobylette, j'ai donc ressorti la mienne. Elle est bien rouillée et les pneus ont fondus, aquarelle et crayon
When I was 15 there was only one thing in my mind. A second hand Mobylette. I did all kind of jobs, worked on saturday and sunday and saved all I could lay my hands on. During the testdrive it stopped and I had to walk for 5 miles.
