An unusual colour for a Raleigh. It's a colour I associate with Mobylettes, which of course the Raleighs were British assembled versions of.
It looked like new.

Despite their confidence in their celebrated 'Mobylette' the firm Motobécane withdraw themselves from the scooter market in favour of other brand names like Terrot, Peugeot, Vespa and Lambretta.

The invention in 1949, the Mobylette come back to Eric Jaulmes, technical director since 1941 and Charles Benedict, the founder and leader of Motobecane. Already some years before, the engineer Marcel Morel home-Goyon Monet had done a study on a moped 49 cc which will not be accepted by management. The first model will be sold under the name "scooter AV3. He is now with the Velosolex a motorbike popular in France, 1960s to 1990s.
In the 1970s, the most common model was the AV88 commonly called the "blue", that young people like to change for better performance (C52 cylinder, cylinder head double hump, Gurtner carburetor 15mm, expansion box, small handlebars fender aluminum ...).
For a time, Motobecane was the largest producer of two-wheelers in the world with this model. His nicknames are multiple, such as "lash", "rick", "bilete", "pétrolette", "coffee cup", "shit" and especially "mob". The name "Mobylette" emerged from the first model, said AV3 (though this term also refers to the type of engine). She then changed the engine AV7 who abandons the piston deflector for scanning Schnürle two transfers and takes a cylinder light alloy coated with hard chrome, designed under the direction of Eric Jaulmes. Then in the late 70's engine is much more modern 51v (AV10 to admission valves), designed by engineer John bidalot.
