The little town of Moab is a frequently visited place these days, as it lies in a valley between some of the most magnificent scenery in the western United States. Arches, Canyonlands National Parks, the towering LaSal Mountains, and other natural wonders, like the Colorado River, make Moab the perfect place to stay and visit Eastern Utah.

This past week I took a camping trip to Moab, Utah with my friends. We got to the campsite at the perfect time to catch the sunset. The red rocks on the desert floor make a huge contrast to the high mountain peaks of the La Sal mountains in the background.
About 21 miles NE of Moab is some gorgeous scenery. After spending the day in Arches I decided to show my wife this area - she's never seen it. We arrived in late afternoon - good lighting but it was getting dark soon and we didn't have a chance to hike around Fisher Towers - we will do this hike the next time we're in Moab. This whole drive along Highway 128 is awesome - most of it parallels the Colorado River. After spending time in Arches and the Fisher Towers I think we earned a very cold beer at the Moab Brewery!
Taken while biking around Moab, UT last week. I've tried a bunch to get a decent shot of those damn mountains, it just never seems to work out. A big HDR like this seems my only trick to make them look halfway decent. Oh well!
Happy New Years!
The desert is a study in contrasts - greenery and bare trees, parched rock and snow-capped peaks, endless variations of color. Taken in the Canyonlands near Moab, Utah, and Jeff Clow's Dirt Cheap Photo Tour.
Project 52: week #7
Day 46.
Hard as it is to let go, after seven days of Beana pics in a row it is time for a therapeutic change. Back to an image from 2000, before the second Bush, 9/11 and last week's new political low-point which I still cannot really get my head around. Need escapism. Time to remember Moab.

Just a little bit of sand from Moab, Utah.
Photo taken for Macro Monday's weekly theme. This week's theme is 'smaller than a coin" Well, sand is smaller...
There is something about the Colorado River that I cannot put into words. Walking along its banks, crossing it on a footbridge, and dining a stone's throw away from its waters was a very humbling experience. Its quiet power to shape history--let alone the land--inspires an awe like nothing else.
While visiting in Moab, my daughter let me use her newly completed floral studio to compose a still life or two. The dried flowers seemed appropriate for this time of year in this dry part of the country.
Just to the east of the valley where Moab, Utah, is located, is an area of rock formations and canyons that I call the Moab Highlands. I explored the area with Dan Micks, who offers tours in his souped-up big-wheeled all-terrain 4wd monster truck/jeep. In this shot, the "road" is right in front of us.
If you ever have the opportunity to spend a day or half-day with Dan, go for it.
