What may look like the summit crater is not a volcanic crater. On Haleakalā Summit there was no massive blowout. The deep basin below is instead an erosional valley where wind, stream runoff, and landslides carried away loose cinders and soil during pauses in volcanic activity.
High cliffs around the basin measure the enormous mass of material that has washed away through Ko‘olau and Kaupō gaps.
Deeper valleys onced gouged the summit floor, but more recent eruptions - the visible lava flows and cinder cones - partially refilled the basin. Today the summit climate of freezing and thawing loosens rock and accelerates erosion.
Haleakalā will erupt again: from this viewpoint, at least seven eruptions occurred on the landscape in the past thousand years.

This is a replacement marker called "Reiter" ("rider" or "tab") in German indicating a missing book in the vaults of the Frankfurt am Main archive of the German National Library. It concerns registered book no. 239 of the year 1947. I think that the upper note indicates that this was recorded as the 8th discovered absence in the year 2007, or maybe the 7th discovered absence in the year 2008.

I am already missing the lovely colors of Fall. This was taken the same day of the "50 mm" challenge that I mentioned a few days ago.

Our special boy is missing. GT does go outside but generally he sticks pretty close to home. He has not been see since Friday morning. He was wearing a (breakaway) collar with a tag and he is microchipped. We have put ads online, posted flyers and have checked our local pound, but so far nothing.
The other troublesome thing is that our neighbor's cat Scratch has been missing since Thursday.
I can't even begin to express how heartbroken we are. :-(

This poster lists which bands the artists are members of (if any), what instruments they play, and how they lost their digits. Also included are two honorable mentions with paralyzed fingers.
We knew the weather would not be optimal, but we thought the rain would hold off until the afternoon. It didn't. But we were prepared, and only got a little wet. This was our first visit to this scenic route, but it won't be our last...!

The E key came off my keyboard today... The white plastic clip under the key has broken and so I've ordered a new one.
Greek Cypriot missing persons exhibition, Nicosia, Cyprus (2006). The images in the black frames show Greek Cypriots who were captured by the Turkish army following its invasion of the island in 1974. Those with faces circled were never seen alive again by their families. The faces numbered 2, 3 and 4 are those of Greek Cypriots who surrendered to Turkish forces. Following DNA testing of remains found by the UN-sponsored Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus in 2009 it was discovered that they were executed immediately after the photo was taken and their bodies thrown down a well.
