Simple (translation) of the History:
The Jewish cemetery in the Schönhauser avenue 23-25 lies in the proximity of the Senefelderplatzes in the local part Prenzlauer berg (district Pankow) of Berlin. It was used mainly between 1827 and 1880. During that time the Jewish municipality through-lived important political and cultural changes, which found their expression also on this cemetery.
The size of the cemetery is approximately 5 Hectares. It holds approximately 22,800 single graves and 750 hereditary family grave plots.
During WWII, the main entry way to the cemetery and mourning chapel were destroyed. Bombs knocked over many graves and bullet holes still mar some even today. Vandilism was also prevalent - with many of the family plot gates and metal markings on the stones were removed and melted down. In addition, many stones were also stacked in piles and ditches built around the cemetery as tank barricades.
After WWII, the cemetery remained closed until the early 1960's. It was then that the debris was cleared and and in 1961, the modern lapidarium and entry gates were added. Some stones have been restored, while others remain tumbled over and in stacks now moved into the cemetery boundaries.
The Cemetery is open M-Th, and donations for further restoration are requested at the gates.
One of the saddest aspects of war, particularly for the family members and loved ones, is the loss of a hero whose remains are never recovered.
The marble walls at the Memorial inscribe the names of those soldiers who fought during World War II in the regions starting from Australia northward to Japan, eastward to the Palau islands, and westward to China, Burma and India. Their remains have never been identified, or they were lost or buried at sea.
