Inside of one of the house's. I wonder what life was like living here many many years ago. It had to have been a hard life, but they appeared to have all the modern conveniences of that time-frame.

Banská Štiavnica's old medieval mining centre grew into a town with Renaissance palaces, 16th-century churches, elegant squares and castles. The urban centre blends into the surrounding landscape, which contains vital relics of the mining and metallurgical activities of the past, like the world’s first technical university devoted to Chemistry, Physics and Mineralogy was founded here in 1762. This is Silverton Colorado an old mining town with personality. There are beautiful mountains, lots of eateries and shopping. We stayed at the Wyman Inn. Enjoyed the 4 PM tea and pastries and the 5 PM wine and cheese... Great place to hang your hat for the night, cowboy!
A restored ghost town. Not what we took the Anaconda road in search of, but pretty all the same.

The rush to the 'Silvery Slocan' began in 1891 when vast amounts of silver ore were discovered in this region of south central British Columbia. Within a few years, Sandon was a bustling town of over 5000 people. Today, it is almost a ghost town.

Silverton Museum is located in the old gaol buildings. Silverton was established in the 1880s after miners came to the region seeking silver. Lead and zinc was also found in the region. Most miners moved on to the larger centre of Broken Hill nearby and Silverton gradually dwindled towards becoming a ghost town. It has been maintained as a tourist destination. Located in far western New South Wales in Australia.

Ice pellets pounded us just minutes after this image was taken in Bodie California in early June. We were with the Mountain High Workshops.
Terlingua Cemetery
Terlingua is a "ghost Town" located just outside the west entrance to Big Bend National Park. It was founded in the 1880's as a mining town. Today it caters to tourists.

This old machine was sitting in the grass, fan blades turning fast and smooth as ever in the slight wind. What was it?
After a beautiful drive I reached my destination of Giltedge Montana. It's an abandoned mining town that contains amazing history--Calamity Jane liked to spend her time here!
"During 1900-1901 Gilt Edge was considered one of the best towns in the country. Gilt Edge reached its peak between 1908 and 1909. Calamity Jane, calling it her favorite, frequented Gilt Edge. On several occasions she spent time in their jail." -centralmt.com

I was thrilled to see this very old stone structure complete with a cross and hitching posts out front, but upon further inspection I found that the cross and hitching posts were not nearly as old as the structure. Still, they make it look amazing! I wish I could tell you what this place was but I unfortunately have no idea. Maybe you can read this map better than I can and tell me:

Inside the Wagon Shop
Nevada City was founded in 1863 when gold was discovered in Alder Gulch. By 1864 there were 10,000 people mining in the area. After the gold rush, the town quickly declined. Today Nevada City is mostly an open air museum with over 100 historic buildings. Some are original Nevada City structures, others have been brought here from other areas of Montana.
Coober Pedy is a town in the arid interior of South Australia. It has developed a unique culture and appearance. Dominated by the earthworks of opal mining, many homes and businesses are underground to escape the extreme heat. The town is fiiled with unusual collections of mining history, junk, and props and sets from old movies.
The ghost town of Gwalia, just outside Leonora in the goldfields of Western Australia. Can you imagine living out here in the summer, working in the mine then coming home to a hot tin shack?
A tiny town we stumbled across near Grass Valley, CA. There were lots of adorable buildings, like an old-west Disneyland, but "No Trespassing" signs everywhere.
Someone's private roadside attraction, maybe?
