When this Town Hall was built in 1923 the town of Derby in northeastern Tasmania was at its peak. In 1874 George Renison Bell discovered tin deposits in the area and prospectors quickly flooded in. The first major mining endeavour was by the Krushka brothers, and in fact the settlement's first name was "Brother's Home". In 1885 the growing town was renamed Derby.
By the end of the 19th century the Krushka Brothers alone were producing up to 120 tonnes of tin per month. The Cascade River, which flowed into the lower Ringarooma River, provided a natural flow of water into a dam which was used to wash out the tin oxide from the granite rocks. But in 1929, just a few short years after this lovely Town Hall was built, a huge flood of the Cascade River destroyed the dam and flooded the town, killing 14 people.
It took several years to get the mine running again, but it never reached the heights of the previous decades and finally closed in 1948.
The sign on the sidewalk auspiciously proclaims that Annie Oakley's Emporium is "America's First Recreational Dispensary" [of marijuana].

Tonopah, Nevada
Tonopah Cemetery dates from 1901 -1911. It is full of victims of the Belmont Fire, a mining disaster of February 23, 1911 and the 1902 (some say 1905) Tonopah plague. This was a huge pneumonia outbreak. A few others include sad, and random accidental local deaths from back then which can be read on the memorials.
One of the old houses in Bodie. Bodie is a former gold mining town east of the Sierra Nevada mountain range and north of Mono Lake in California. It once had a population of about 10,000. Only about 5 percent of the town remains. It became a California State Historic Park in 1962 and is maintained in a state of "arrested decay". Lots of really good photo opportunities there.
The old pharmacy in North Bloomfield hides behind a cloak of scarlet and orange. This is a great place to find common medicines like Cough Killer, Pain Balm, Lame Back Liniment, and my favorite--Kennedy's Laxative Cough Syrup.

Bodie is an original mining town from the late 1800’s. What’s left today stands in a state of “arrested decay” and is maintained by the California State Parks System, who took over the town in 1962 to make it a State Historic Park.
October 2019. Took a weekend trip to Goldfield Nevada in Esmeralda County, This area is know to have one of the darkest night skies in America.

The wagon master and his horses enjoy a rest in the shade during the annual Humbug Day picnic and parade. This is one of the best small town events I've attended. Friendly folks wearing authentic historical costumes, and the barbecue was great.

This was such an interesting city to experience. It was quite a large city back in the early 1900s when mining was at its peak here, only 11 miles from Mexico border. This city has quite a rich history and incredible architecture, almost european like.

One of the many vintage scenes of rust and decay at the ghost town of Haynes, near Jerome,AZ.
Haynes had a peak population of around 30 in the early 1900's with its own post office from 1908-1922. After the local mines closed, most moved to nearby Jerome which was still booming. In the early 2000's, the remnants of the town became the Gold King Mine and Ghost Town tourist attraction. The current owner is a big collector of vintage cars,trucks, and busses. There are well over 100 on display currently(with more arriving weekly!)....
The old diamond mining town of Kohnlmanskop takes on an interesting, melancholy mood as the low sunlight streams through the windows and lights the blue walls and sand piles in the abandoned buildings. 20230617KohlmanskopTest14
My childhood home was fronted by long and very tall hedge. My mother had this penchant for hedges that followed classical lines, and loved it when our hedge took on the shape of a giant, smooth, rectangular, green brick. As luck would have it the job of trimming the hedge fell to yours truly.
In contrast to my mother I'm more in line with the romantic garden philosophy, where gardens should grow according their own plan, and the shaggier they get, the better. So, the monthly hedge trim was an iterative process where I'd trim until I was satisfied, retire to my room, to await the inevitable summons from my mother, where I'd find her at the top of stairs, hedge clippers in hand, demanding that I finish the job. We usually went through this process at least five times before she was satisfied. And that's what I thought about when I saw this hedge-lined walkway.

Now a ghost town and California State Park, Bodie was once a rough and thriving gold mining town on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. According to the State Historical Park brochure it is estimated that only about 5% of the buildings remain from the town's 1877-1881 heyday. At it's peak, it is estimated that Bodie's population ranged from 7000-8000 people. The park is kept in a state of "arrested decay", meaning that the structures are repaired and stabilized, but not restored.
