The rush to the 'Silvery Slocan' began in 1891 when vast amounts of silver ore were discovered in this region of south central British Columbia. Within a few years, Sandon was a bustling town of over 5000 people. Today, it is almost a ghost town.

This was intended to just be a quick photo-op of the outside of the building as what I had read online prior to my trip suggested the brothel was closed, but sure enough the door was wide open, and for $10, this was one of the most fascinating tours of anywhere I have ever visited. A must-stop if you are in Montana!

Idaho City was founded in 1862 after gold was discovered in Boise Basin. It quickly became the largest city in the Pacific Northwest. Today tourism is the main business in Idaho City.

Silverton Museum is located in the old gaol buildings. Silverton was established in the 1880s after miners came to the region seeking silver. Lead and zinc was also found in the region. Most miners moved on to the larger centre of Broken Hill nearby and Silverton gradually dwindled towards becoming a ghost town. It has been maintained as a tourist destination. Located in far western New South Wales in Australia.
Gold was discovered in Gregory Gulch in 1859. Within one year, 10,000 people arrived in the area. Central City became known as "The richest square mile on earth". Today, Central City is an interesting mining town to explore. Much more historic than neighboring Blackhawk, which has been overrun with fancy casinos.
Bodie California, lies roughly about 10-12 miles on a dirt and partly gravel road near the city of Bridgeport, California. It was a typical old mining town, but it's good fortune was that it was preserved through the efforts of a few farsighted individuals.

Sean and I rolled into Rock Springs, Wyoming, careening off of Interstate 80 in the middle of a construction zone, looking for gas. What we found were gas stations that were closed, out of gas, or attached to a Wal-Mart. The whole town was bizarre. It was full of 3-star hotels, Chinese restaurants which featured sushi and bars in the middle of nowhere, clearly a town for business travelers. The grimy streets, dusty air and grinding of the freeway construction all conspired to leave me with an impression of an angry, rough town. We beat a hasty exit, on our way to Eastern Wyoming.

The silver mining town of Pioche reached it's peak in the 1870's, when it had a population of about 6,000. Today around 1000 people live in town. It is a wonderful and historic frontier town to explore.

I was thrilled to see this very old stone structure complete with a cross and hitching posts out front, but upon further inspection I found that the cross and hitching posts were not nearly as old as the structure. Still, they make it look amazing! I wish I could tell you what this place was but I unfortunately have no idea. Maybe you can read this map better than I can and tell me:

The Ghost Town of Bannack is located in the mountains of Southwest Montana. The town began in 1862 when gold was discovered along Grasshopper Creek. It quickly flourished into a boom town of over 4000 people and was briefly the Territorial Capital of Montana. As with most mining towns, the boom turned to bust, and the town was down to one resident by the 1950's. Today it is a Montana State Park and is one of the best preserved ghost towns in the American West.

Bodie, California is an abandoned mining town. Once the second biggest city in California and long known as one of the roughest places in the country, Bodie is now a ghost town, quiet, only the voices of the tourists and the whisper of the wind remain. The buildings still standing are less than 5% of what was once here.

Virginia City was founded in 1863 when gold was discovered in Alder Gulch. By 1864 there were 10,000 people mining in the area. After the gold rush, the town quickly declined. Today, Virginia City is mostly a tourist town, with a year round population of around 200.

We took another detour back into the Little Rockies to visit the mining town of Landusky for the very first time! I was not disappointed, it was amazing! It was like stepping back in time. There were old mining cabins galore and beautiful treasures and people leading a slow-paced way of life.
"Powell Landusky, a teenager from Missouri, came to Last Chance Gulch during the late 1870s and eked out an existence panning for gold. In 1880, Landusky, in a fight with some Souix Indians, took a bullet in the jaw, which disfigured him for life. In 1893, Landusky and a partner were prospecting along a ridge when they discovered a vein of rich ore thirteen feet wide that would yield them $13,000 a ton and the stampede was on. The mining camp was known as Sandusky and on June 9, 1894, it officially became the town of Sandusky. Christmas was always a time for celebration for mining activity was at a minimum due to heavy snowfall. It was to be Powell Landusky's last Chtristmas. On the morning of December 26, 1894, Powell Landusky walked into a saloon and ordered a drink for it was bitter cold that morning. Kid Curry, with whom Landusky had been feuding, came into the saloon and a fight between two ensued. Landusky was shot and killed by Kid Curry who later was to join up with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Enough old structures remain to imagine what Landusky was like in its violent days." -ghosttowns.com
