This scenic lake is actually right in the middle of coal mining country. Coal was pulled out of these mountains for over 100 years. At one time, coal from this area supplied one sixth of the entire United States in coal. Fortunately, most of the land has been returned to pristine landscapes. This valley sits just above Raton NM, famous as a stop on the Mountain Route of the Santa Fe Trail.
This is an area rich in mining history. It's off of Highway 550 a.k.a. the 'Million Dollar Highway' in southwest Colorado.
