The First Meeting of D-8 Working Group on Mining and Minerals (WGMM) was held in Bali, Indonesia, on 11-12 December 2008. The Meeting was attended by delegations from all D-8 member countries, namely, the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, the Arab Republic of Egypt, the Republic of Indonesia, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Malaysia, the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, and the Republic of Turkey.

Illegal mining is a major issue for COCOMOPOCA’s communities. Despite being granted a collective land title for 73,000 has., there are many illegal mines operating within the territory, and the State has done nothing to remove them. The mines contaminate the rivers, damage the land, and remove the communities’ main income source – panning for gold. Here, we travelled passed an illegal goldmine on the banks of the Capá river. The mining site of Waldorf, off the Guanella Pass Road, near Georgetown, CO, is above timberline, now showing signs of decay, but enough remains to make the site extremely interesting.
