Illegal mining is a major issue for COCOMOPOCA’s communities. Despite being granted a collective land title for 73,000 has., there are many illegal mines operating within the territory, and the State has done nothing to remove them. The mines contaminate the rivers, damage the land, and remove the communities’ main income source – panning for gold. Here, we travelled passed an illegal goldmine on the banks of the Capá river.
