Granite Ghost Town in Summer, Granite County, Montana
Silver was first discovered in the area around Granite in 1865. The Granite mines, (pictured), were discovered in 1872. During the course of silver mining at Granite, $40 million dollars worth of silver was removed, making it the "richest silver mine on earth." The mine was closed after the silver panic of 1893.
The site pictured is what remains of two massive buildings that covered the face of these rock walls and contained 70 stamp mills that crushed ore from the Ruby mine. After crushing, the ore was sent down the hill for the silver to be separated from the base metal by amalgamation with mercury. The stamp mills worked six days a week at the height of production.
Granite was a company town, built by the Granite Mountain Mining Company. It is located approximately four miles due north of present day Philipsburg, MT.
Another historical artifact from Independence Mine's collapse. The Hatcher Pass area is named after Robert Hatcher, a prospector that staked the first claim in the Talkeetna Mountains in 1906. The Independence Mine is now a state historical park in Hatcher Pass. The mine area encompassed 1350 acres with nearly a dozen miles in tunnels. After extracting $6 million in gold, the mine closed in 1951. Later, 271 acres of the former mine were donated to the state and made into the current historical park, with ongoing preservation efforts every year.
I saw loads of these today. On the sandy part of the cliffs. At first I thought they were some sort of parasitic wasp, or false wasp, but now I see it, it looks more like a bee? I would be interested to know from the insect people as to what they think these are :) Thanks in advance :)
The First Meeting of D-8 Working Group on Mining and Minerals (WGMM) was held in Bali, Indonesia, on 11-12 December 2008. The Meeting was attended by delegations from all D-8 member countries, namely, the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, the Arab Republic of Egypt, the Republic of Indonesia, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Malaysia, the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, and the Republic of Turkey.
