GHH mining machine underground shovel, when they were introduced in the Monteponi mine, helped to make the work lighter and faster. He wouldn't mind seeing it displayed in a protected area and not exposed to the elements. A machine created to work indoors that ends its "career" outdoors. The most interesting part are the reinforcements made by hand welding along the entire profile of the blade of the shovel. Although not a certainly functional artistic work; this is proof of the mastery and skills that the staff had acquired in working in a mine like this.

Class: Insecta

Order: Hymenoptera

Family: Andrenidae

Subfamily: Andreninae

Genus: Andrena

Species: A. cineraria

Binomial name

Andrena cineraria

Linnaeus, 1758

The ashy mining bee or grey mining bee, Andrena cineraria, is a European species of the sand bee (Andrena) genus.[1][2] Its distinctive colouring makes it one of the most easily recognised of the genus.[3] The females are black, with two broad grey hair bands across the thorax. The male is also black although the thorax is entirely covered with grey hairs.[4] The male has a tuft of white hairs on the lower face and white hairs on all femora while the female has white hairs only on the front femora.[2] The female has twelve segments to their antennae and the male has thirteen.[3]

The ashy mining bee is common and widespread throughout Europe, ranging from Ireland across central Europe and into Scandinavia. They are common throughout the United Kingdom although less frequent in northern Scotland. Generally docile, they are considered safe around children and pets.[4] The ashy mining bee flies from April until early June, most noticeably during the flowering periods of fruit trees, of which they are an important pollinator.[4] They are also commonly seen hovering just above the ground after mating in spring.[5] Following mating, the male dies and the female starts to build a nest. Each female has her own nest and the ashy mining bee is therefore classified amongst solitary bees. They prefer to nest in tended lawns, flowerbeds, parkland, calcareous grassland, orchards and on the borders of agricultural land.[4]

The nest is a simple burrow with several brood cells branching off it. The entrances to the burrows are identifiable by the conical mounds of excavated spoil on the surface. The female fills the brood cells with a mixture of nectar and pollen, and lays one egg in each cell. The larva hatches within a few days, grows quickly and pupates within a few weeks. The adults emerge the following spring after hibernation. The male emerges before the female.[4] The nests are frequently invaded by cleptoparasitic "cuckoo bees."

Celebrating Halloween Along the Elkhorn Scenic Byway with Grant McOmie Filming for Grants Getaways

A great fall day along the Elkhorn Scenic Byway in Northeast Oregon celebrating fall and Halloween including a tour of the haunted Sumpter Valley Gold Dredge and Trunk Or Treating with Grant McOmie filming for an upcoming episode of the travel series Grant's Getaways

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Sumpter Valley Gold Dredge is the last of three built on the Powder River. Built in 1935, it ran until 1954. It dug up more than four million dollars worth of gold. The Dredge is located just a block off of the main street of the small historic mining town of Sumpter along the Elkhorn Scenic Byway

The tour of the dredge is a great way to explore the gold mining heritage of Eastern Oregon and the Sumpter Valley. The Dredge is currently undergoing restoration however park rangers will continue to host tours throughout the restoration process.

Visitors to the park can also try their luck at gold panning and explore the vast system of nature and interpretive trails that meander through the tailings left by the dredge as it worked it’s way up the river bed more than a half century ago.

The Sumpter Dredge is also the setting for bestselling author Patrick Carman’s, Skeleton Creek book series www.patrickcarman.com/enter/skeleton-creek

The Otho Mining District was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in December 2004. Photographs from nomination, December 2002.

The Otho lode was discovered by Byron Ferguson and William McGarrity on June 4, 1892. It was reportedly named for Otho Ferguson who lived and worked in the area. While Otho was originally developed during the false tin boom in the late 1800s, it persisted and was one of the few areas that actually did produce tin ore after the tin hoax had ended. There may also have been extraction of beryl and feldspar.

The Otho Mining District near Greyhound Creek by Keystone includes the built structures of a bunkhouse, hotel, house, outhouse, and shed from about 1914. The estimated population of Otho in the early 20th century was 200. Some of the miners worked at the Otho Tin Mill, while some worked at other nearby mines. Cooking at the bunkhouse was done by the Ferguson family, and later by Ernest and Minnie Linde.

When the mill closed during a bust period, some miners left at Otho and sought employment where they could find it. However, a core of families stayed on longer and survived the best they could.
