Mining claim book by South Dakota State Historical Society

The Black Hills were part of the Great Sioux Reservation, so no local white government was in place. Prospectors followed U.S. tradition, setting up a system of mining districts. A party of miners determined the borders of their district and chose a recorder to register claims. They met as a body to create rules, hold court, and enforce the law. Mining claim book, French Creek, ca. 1877.

A mining bee, appears to be an Andrena species, a very diverse genus. There has been a colony (or aggregation, really) of these bees at this site for at least several years. Along with them are attending brood parasites (such as another bee, Nomada) and various parasitoids. It is in an area of very short grass adjacent to a parking lot. When I first came across it, several years ago, I thought it was an ant colony.
