Tamaracks in fall splendour grow by the mucking machine and ore car on rails at the Fred Henne Territorial Park entrance. Yellowknife, NT. 27 Sept. 2011.
The image was taken in some old claims of the Mayener Grubenfeld. This area is one of the oldest and most important places to mine for basalt stone, and is located in the center of the area named "Vulkanische Osteifel", the "Vulcanic Eastern-Eifel". The area was formed about 200000 years ago, as magma filled the Nettetal valley. The basalt stone is mined in the area starting about 5000 b.c. up to now, the makes the area to one of the oldest mining areas still in use.
This small claim was one of the typical claims of the area upto the time frame of 1900 to WWII. The claims was operated by around 5 persons and filled with water after it was abondaned.

Roslyn, WA - Roslyn was a coal mining town for about 30 yrs in the early 20th century. Roslyn pays tribute to the miners that made the town in this mural. They take pride in their heritage in other monuments around the town center. Many immigrants came to Roslyn during the mining days and made the town what it was... and is.
Crater of Diamonds State Park. Personally, I thought this could be used as a type of torture device used in the 19th century :)
Old mining exploration road leading up to the Burwash Uplands. Following the road sure beats thrashing through 12 feet tall willow bushes.
Found of the "feast" and founder of the famine, remains of the mining company and the remnants of downtown Miami, Florida. That building on the left is a massive YMCA. You can get a good deal on many buildings in Miami, if you can get a bank to agree to finance in such a location.
And old "Beam" single-cylinder steam engine used in Colorado mining. Used for pumping and lifting, these engines were not efficient and were replaced by other types. But gold (and silver, ...) were powerful incentives so the mining folks did not wait for efficiency - they wanted things "yesterday", if not sooner.
We entered the one shaft we saw that was safe. Carefully made it to the end. There were 2 rail cars inside, a bit of moisture, many test drill sites and a few tiny cave ins. It was an excellent adventure.
This cold weather, the bees are just laying on the Rhody leaves hoping the sun will come out and warm them. Easier to photograph them this way but I would settle for chasing them in the sunshine.
This limestone mine and processing plant are in the Santa Rita Mountains near Helvetia, a ghost town, which was deserted after copper mining played out.
