Come and join me on my Harris and Lewis Photography Workshop 2nd-8th March 2019 £1,395

WOW, I spent 24 hours in my minibus /temporary makeshift campervan in the visitor centre car park at this amazing location starting 3pm Sunday until mid-afternoon Monday and that afforded me plenty of time and opportunity to walk the five-minute journey to the stones.

I filmed a video on New Year's Eve showing you how I photograph these stones in the dark using my headtorch (video should be ready by tomorrow evening as it still requires editing yet). Seeing the dawn of a new year in at such an iconic location (along with four other people who kindly brought a bottle of whiskey so that we could all have a wee dram when Big Ben struck at midnight).

It was a really special feeling sharing the occasion with strangers and it is one that I will not forget in a hurry. I then returned pre-dawn as the colours were building in the sky. So off I went to film some more footage for the video when a glorious rainbow appeared and covered the entire stone circle. I will edit the image and include it in the video so you'll have to wait to see that for now ;-)

The sun rose and starbursted behind one of the stones with the most amazing sky and cloud formation to accompany it. By the time I left Callanish yesterday afternoon, I felt connected to the stones as I had allowed myself enough time to bond with them and to see them at different times of the day. It was a wonderful experience and definitely not one that I shall forget.

But for now, here's an image that I would love to share with you all. The stones were lit using my headtorch and they required several attempts to get the light intensity and positioning just right as I spent the 30 seconds that it took to take the shot walking from stone to stone. I love it when a plan comes together. I hope you all do too.

Mornings are my favourite time of the day to photograph the great outdoors and a scene like this at Lough (pronounced 'lock') Nacung Upper which means 'upper narrowness lake' is one such morning.

Bernard Geraghty was with me as we saw the sun rise beyond the horizon but before that occurred the colour arrived for a brief period which reflected in the calm water beautifully. I saw the remnants of a tree branch in the water and just had to include it.

This is one of the locations that we will be visiting at sunrise on my soon to be announced four-day, four night North Ireland & Giant's Causeway Workshop. If you would like to be notified before the general public and social media viewers of my upcoming Ireland workshops, feel free to subscribed here. Go on, it's free and only takes thirty seconds.

Black Nore Lighthouse, Portishead, Somerset

It was a real pleasure returning to this fabulous little lighthouse in Portishead. I first visited and photographed this location four years ago and have been wanting to return.

So last Sunday, I ventured down Pre-sunrise to see what I could find. On arriving, the pre-dawn colour was starting to build beautifully and I did not have long to find a subject to shoot and compose an image.

However, these wonderful wooden tree trunks had been tossed up onto the beach and were perfectly placed to use them as a great lead in to the lighthouse which I wanted to be positioned in the middle of the frame.

I was fairly close to the trees so I knew that I would have to focus stack three images to ensure that I had full sharpness from front to back. I then merged all three images together in Photoshop CC to give me a wonderfully sharp image right the way through.

The light and colour were subtly stunning, casting a gorgeous glow onto the right side of the lighthouse. Overall, I am delighted with this finished photo.

What do you think? 😃

I am on day nine of my twenty three day road trip down south. Tonight I shall be shooting Knowlton Church in Dorset at sunset. I'm hoping for some lovely colour. Have a great weekend ahead everyone and I shall share another image tomorrow evening.

Here's a brand new edit of one of the photos I was most looking forward to editing once home.

Derryclare Lough is a freshwater lake in the west of Ireland. It is located in the Connemara area of County Galway. There is an island of pine trees that make for a great subject to shoot at sunrise.

Not one of Iceland's iconic locations but when the roads from 5km in either direction of the hotel are closed due to extreme weather and you only have 10km of road open, you have to make the best of a bad job but having driven down this glorious long road to this scene, the sun started setting so we pulled up and grabbed our cameras. Ten minutes before we were assisting a group of German tourists by removing banked up snow from under their Skoda Yeti when they tried to drive in 15" snow. It seems that Yeti's are not that good making their way through the snow after all, lol.

How excited am I to be able to share this image with you that I captured on camera last week during my one week Iceland photography workshop that I was running? Very excited indeed I can tell you for I have visited Iceland on numerous occasions and a stunning sunset over this iconic mountain has always eluded me, until tonight.

The colour built up over a period of twenty minutes so me and my two clients Kevin and Stuart, ventured down to the water's edge to capture the mountain's reflection but the sky suddenly exploded with amazing colours of pinks and oranges. I am one very happy photographer tonight.

I fired off a very quick shot of Thornton Force whilst leading a workshop in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales in early January. It was fast approaching the end of the day and the light was fading. fast.

I love waterfalls and the natural s-curve of the river that flows from it made for an ideal composition.

Have a great Thursday evening everyone.

Taken on Tuesday morning during what was a absolutely beautiful sunrise. I had just shot several ice bergs with the rising orange sun behind them when I turned around and saw this wonderful scene unfolding. I had to run to a higher section of the beach to give me some clearance at the base of the image and set up within a minute to capture the peak just lighting up.

It is mornings like these that I will remember come the end of the year when I look back on my experiences during 2017. You just cannot put a price on watching the world come alive everyday and I am so blessed to be able to travel and witness such beauty, especially after having trained as a nurse 2008-12 and understanding that so many people are unable to for a variety of reasons. That's why I live life to the full now, because I can and if in some small way I can bring a smile to the face of someone who cannot travel and see such places for themselves, then that makes me feel very happy indeed.

WOW, WOW, WOW. I rarely write the word WOW three times unless the scene deserves it and boy did this scene deserve it indeed.

To be honest, the whole of the Dolomite area in Italy is utterly beautiful and staggeringly stunning but standing on the middle path looking over the 8,000ft mountains in the distance, all layering up one after another was spellbinding.

I remember just standing there thinking how amazing the view looked and how I felt compelled to reach for my Canon 5D MK4 camera and Canon 70-200 f2.8 lens, a dynamic duo that always captures what I see so well.

So here is the simple shot comprising several mountains. I hope you all like it.

Taken on Wednesday during a day out with the camera and my good friend Tony Higginson. After leaving Hodge Close near Coniston, we decided to go on an explore around the Eden Valley as this is an area that neither of us are familiar with. So off we ventured in Tony's Volvo estate, battling slippery, snow covered roads up and down the valley which was interesting to say the least but nothing gets in the way of finding a lovely scene to shoot.

So here I am, having wandered a couple of hundred yards down the road from the car, and I saw this lovely tree and hedgerow in the distance but it was the gorgeous shadows that interested me more. The sun was setting late in the day and casting longer and longer shadows as the minutes ticked by so I had to work reasonable quickly to get set up and composed (the camera not me, lol) before the shadows encroached too far over to the left hand side of the scene.

I hope you all like it. have a great weekend everyone. I'm leaving for Skye tomorrow morning with several clients. Should be an interesting drive.

What an amazing sight to wake up too this morning. The rising sun burning up and behind the stunning clouds beaming down crepuscular rays over the lighthouse and to complete the image off perfectly, a cargo boat slowly glides by.

Sights like these are why I have fallen in love with the Outer Hebrides.

I have just freshly edited this image from my time in Glencoe last December. I remember standing on that elevated rocky ledge and looking over what to me is one of the most spectacular views ANYWHERE in the whole of the UK.

I give you moonlight and headlights. I arrived around an hour before dark with a couple of friends, hiked up to a little ridge that overlooks the road and the mountains in the distance, waited for a couple of cars to drive through the valley and shot the scene for thirty seconds.

I am really happy with how the image has turned out and the Canon 5D MK4 that I took the photo on is a big improvement on my previous Canon 5Ds, especially for dynamic range and noise levels.

Taken during my five days spent in Victoria a couple of weeks or so ago. This is Bell's Beach, a well known surfing spot made famous by starring in the 1991 film Point Break starring Patrick Swayze and Keano Reeves.

I spent a glorious hour here watching the numerous surfers of all ages, walk past me down the wooden steps and onto the beach. Each person had their own form of preparation. Some took no more than five seconds to get into the water while the older guys took a little longer, often standing in the water to assess the power of the waves as well as their regularity.

I found this viewpoint fascinating, looking down on them gave the whole scene more gravitas and this photo in particular demonstrates the power of the water as it rushes towards the standing surfer. I love how the water trails around his feet as it rushes past him to meet the incoming waves, It is a simple shot but to me a stunning capture of life as a typical Australian who lives by the ocean.

Well today's workshop took place in the beautifully remote region of Chapel-le-Dale in which the iconic and magnificent Ribblehead Viaduct is located. This wonderful 142 year old railway viaduct was built in 1875 and was designed by engineer John Sydney Crossley. It took one thousand navvis to build it of which one hundred lost their lives during the five years it took to build it.

The Ribblehead Viaduct is 440 yards (400 m) long, and 104 feet (32 m) above the valley floor at its highest point. It is made up of twenty-four arches of 45 feet (14 m) span, with foundations 25 feet (7.6 m) deep. Every 6th pier is 50% thicker to mitigate against complete collapse should any pier fail. An amazing 1.5 million bricks were used in the construction and some of the limestone blocks weigh 8 tons each.

Today however, the weather turned seriously misty which proved to be challenging for those attending my workshop but we spent a good couple of hours wandering around while I offered advice on composition and settings. I personally love days like these as it allows the viaduct to truly shine without the surrounding fells claiming so glory for themselves.

HUGE thanks to Jayne, John, Darren, Dave, Ian, Mike, Seshi, and Stuart for their company. A really enjoyable day was had.

FOUR DAY LAKE DISTRICT AUTUMN WORKSHOP

Tues 31st October - Fri 3rd November 2017 £795

www.melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product/lake-distric...

I managed to very quickly capture this scene on Thursday evening at the end of day three of my four-day workshop in the Lake District. I drove my clients to Coniston from the amazing Cathedral Cavern only to find the fantastic colours in the sky had arrived as we turned up.

A mad dash to the water's edge saw around fourteen photographers on a workshop all line the banks of Monk Pier but thanks to my seven foot Gitzo tripod, I was able to shoot the scene over the heads of those who were stood in front of me. The looks on their faces when they turned around and looked up at the sheer height of the camera was priceless.

Anyhow, here's what I managed to capture before helping a couple of my clients set up. I can often set up and shoot an image before my clients have set up their cameras so I often only have literally two to three minutes. Still, that's all I needed on this occasion. I hope you all like it and feel free to share it if you wish :D

Captured during a week spent on the magical island of Lewis and in particular Harris mid-January 2017. It is fair to say that the weather was at times 'challenging', some would even say 'difficult' but I just see it as an opportunity to photograph atmospheric images.

On arriving at Mangersta, a short walk across boggy moorland took me to the edge of this quite simply amazing cliff edge where the view is mind blowing. It very much reminded me of my four visits down the Great Ocean Rd in Victoria, Australia that I drove way back in 2003 when I spent a year backpacking over there.

There's something quite magical about seeing sea stacks rise out of the water for me. Perhaps the constant battle between sea and rock with only one eventual winner. The wonderful v-shaped mainland that I used to frame the stacks sets up the composition a treat to my mind and the colour of the water is genuine and has to be seen to be believed. An outstanding island and one that I cannot wait to return to..

What do you think?

I am running a six day workshop to Lewis and Harris in October if anyone is interested, please contact me. infor@melvinnicholson.co.uk

Here's another image of the wonderful Forth Bridges in Scotland but from a different angle to my previous one. The colours were so rich that morning as was I for just being there to take it all in. Not a bad effort on my first sunrise visit with a camera.

I love the composition of the different bridges and how they interplay with each other and of course the reflections make this image for me. Let me know what you think. I'd love to know.

There are images that I really wanted to capture on this visit to Iceland that I failed to get last year and this scene is one of them. The wonderful church that sits high up overlooking the town of Vik.

I arose at 6am, ventured eastwards for 20km and before the sun rose, I set up and fired off several shots from near the black beach so as to have the church more visible than from the roadside.

The lights go out around sunrise (7.43am this morning) so you have to get there earlier than sunrise to capture it with the lights on. I love the setting of the church in front of the mountain behind it and the warm colour of the lighting of the church contrasts beautifully with the cold feel of the ice covered mountain behind.

I hope you all like it. Iceland if you have never visited it, is truly stunning. The weather can be challenging but so rewarding when you get the shot you were after.

Taken on a recent photography tour I led back in March. This is Borve Beach, a truly stunning little section of the beach that we discovered when viewing it from the roadside. Harris has so many of these beaches that you're completely spoilt for choice.

On arriving a couple of hours before sunset, I decided to capture these wonderful rocks. The tide was incoming and creating some wonderful wave lines around this isolated rock. The colour of the sand and the water is just something else. Gorgeous aqua coloured water creates an almost tropical look and feel to the place (minus the heat obviously, ha, ha).

I ran a workshop on the Isle of Skye three weeks ago and during a seriously windy morning up on the Quiraing, this amazing rainbow suddenly appeared right in front of us. Fortunately, I had my camera ready to shoot off a couple of frames. Rainbows seem to be following me around at the moment, with or without colour.

WOW. What a sunset I experienced on Wednesday evening at Bat's Head /Durdle Door while running a three day workshop in Dorset.

My good friend and co-workshop leader Tony Higginson arrived at Durdle Door mid-afternoon with our lovely clients to concentrate on capturing the scenery in the harsh light of day before enjoying a truly stunning sunset while looking along the white chalk cliffs of Bat's Head.

It was a fantastic workshop with five great clients who enjoyed the sights and sounds of Dorset's most iconic locations in a range of weather conditions including one hell of an amazing misty morning at Corfe Castle.

I shall create another workshop in Dorset for next year if not before. If you are interested in attending a three day workshop in Dorset or even Devon and Sussex, let me know.

WOW, despite having visited New Zealand twice before (2003 & 2008) and knowing just how beautiful this country is, I have been utterly blown away by what I have seen and experienced since arriving on Thursday.

Yesterday was one such experience. The weather had been glorious until yesterday morning when on opening the curtains of my sixth floor hotel room at The Hermitage, I saw nothing but high winds and driving rain. Mmmmm. Cooked breakfast consumed, Ed and I (client and now friend) decided to walk the six mile return hike to the iceberg filled Hooker Glacier Lake in the valley (we must have been mad).

Hiking boots and waterproof trousers on, off we walked and with the fierce head wind and driving rain that lashed so hard against your face, it felt like hailstones, the walk proved tough but after an hour and fifteen minutes, we arrived to a misty filled backdrop and a gorgeous green coloured lake,

We took shelter behind a huge rock because at times, it was a struggle just standing upright. Lunch quick eaten and I decided to head down to the shoreline and try to capture this stunning single iceberg that sat in the perfect position waiting for me. It was so beautiful. The ice was clean and blue, with an interesting shape and just far enough out into the lake to capture on its own with a couple of nearby rocks for company.

So I set up the Benro TMA48CXL carbon fibre tripod and wondered how on earth it would perform in seriously demanding conditions. I need not have worried for it performed brilliantly well. Solid, dependable and at over six foot six inches, it allow me to spread the legs out further than normal to obtain a decent steady base. The Canon 5D MK4 camera was bolted on along with a Nisi six Stop ND filter to slow down the water to four seconds (so as to smooth out the water a little while still retaining texture which was so important to me) and a click on the shutter button later and voilà, an image captured.

I took a few more frames and on heading back to the hotel and looking at the images on my small 14" Asus ZenBook laptop, I was amazed that the images turned out quite sharp. Who would have thought? lol.

Anyhow, here is the photo in all its glory. I am so delighted with it I cannot tell you. Sure, some lovely light on the surrounding mountains and some vibrant colour in the sky would have been nice but on reflection, I prefer this image. It speaks to me on another level and captures the real atmosphere of this wondrous place.

New Zealand is amazing me with each passing day and I hope you feel the same when looking at my photos. Thanks for joining me on this inspirational two week journey of mine in New Zealand :D

Take on day three of my four day Lake District autumn workshop this week. This lovely wooden pier is a favourite of mine in the south Lakes when a great sunset is predicted. It is an easy location to reach and car parking nearby.

Normally this location is teeming with photographers but on this evening we had it to ourselves. The colours intensified as the sun dropped and being in a perfect position allowed us plenty of opportunities to capture exactly what we were after.

Today I am home after running another successful and highly enjoyable autumn Lake District workshop but tomorrow I head north again to the gorgeous Isle of Skye for a five day workshop. The weather looks changeable and 'interesting' and that should provide us with some fantastic opportunities to capture some magic on camera.

Narrow Boat at Lechlade, Gloucestershire. Cotswolds, UK.

Raw file processed in Canon’s DPP, and then further processed in Photoshop using Google’s Nik Collection.

There are a million photos of Iceland all over social media and stock gallery websites but few showcase this side of Iceland. Geothermal power stations. I bloody well love them.

You cannot beat photographing a bit of industrial landscape and Iceland is a fantastic place to capture such subjects. This shot was taken on the morning of my first day running a week long workshop in Iceland last week. The weather was incredible with amazing stormy skies and some utterly gorgeous light showing through underneath it.

Remember, dramatic weather helps create dramatic images.

I was driving home from a solo day's photography in Yorkshire late on Monday evening in preparation for my workshop there yesterday when I passed by Nateby and I looked across to my left and saw these trees lit up like a Christmas tree.

I immediately swung the minibus around and flung it into a small section of grass verge swiftly followed by grabbing my camera and tripod while 'jogging' to the perfect spot to set up. I knew that the falling sun which was behind me would soon be too low behind some trees and the moment would be gone.

What struck me was just how dark the background was in comparison to when I passed yesterday. The scene last night looked completely 'normal' with flat light but on this particular evening, the view was truly stunning. It reminded me of Tuscany with its rolling dales and isolated trees.

What a superb way to end a beautiful day in the dales. I hope you like it. Feel free to SHARE if you wish :D

Taken on Friday during my first visit out with the camera since March 20th and it felt great finally being allowed to venture outside again.

My choice of destination was Aysgarth Falls in Yorkshire. The lower falls starred in the 1991 movie 'Robin Hood and the Prince of Thieves' starring Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman however the upper falls that you see in this image have some star power of their own in the form of some wonderful, vibrant green algae in the water.

It was worth placing the 90mm Kase K9 magnetic polariser on the front of the camera to eradicate white light on the surface of the water, therefore, allowing the vibrancy of that lush green to show through.

JOIN ME on my Five Day Northern Lights Iceland Workshop

15th - 20th October 2020

melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product-category/iceland...

A brand new edit of an image that I took last October during what was a stunning morning down on the diamond beach at Jökulsárlón.

I know people love travelling to Iceland in the winter with the snow and ice but for me, autumn is the best time to travel. For a start, you're much more likely to find free floating icebergs in the lagoon across the road as well as on the beach.

For those less familiar with how icebergs end up on the black volcanic beach, here goes.

Ice falls from the glaciers that surround the lagoon, more so at the end of summer when the ice melts a little. Ice drops into the lagoon which is tidal. It eventually glides out to sea where it is thrown up onto the beach. Now in winter, the lagoon is often frozen so the icebergs tend not to move very much nor are there any large pieces of ice falling from the glaciers.

You also have a fantastic opportunity to capture reflections of the icebergs in the lagoon during autumn, especially during sunrise, sunset or if you're very lucky, the northern lights (see photo below in the comment box for a shot I took of the northern lights reflecting in the Jökulsárlón lagoon.

Now, if you have always wanted to visit Iceland with your camera but fear that you have seen all that there is to see on your computer screen, owing to the fact that every man and his dog has visited, I would urge you to go and see it for yourself (ideally on one of my workshops).

There is nothing quite like standing on this beach, first thing in the morning watching the waves roll back and forward around the icebergs while the sun rises over the horizon in a blaze of orange. Honestly, last year, taking the photo below was one of my fondest memories from all the places I visited both here and abroad. JUST STUNNING.

WOW, WOW, WOW. This is quite easily the most beautiful sunset I have ever experienced in Northumberland and more so caught on camera since I have been visiting this part of the UK.

This was last night and the final day of my weekend workshop and I knew exactly where to take my clients once I saw the colour developing. The beauty of Beadnell is that the car park is positioned directly alongside the beach meaning a quick thirty seconds dash to the gorgeous beach there. I knew the stunning colours would reflect in the water just wonderfully well and I wasn't wrong.

I hope you enjoy looking at what I saw with my own two eyes last night. It certainly has left a long lasting memory on my mind.

I know that this subject or composition is hardly original, in fact I have taken it more times than I've had hot dinners but there's an irresistible charm about this pier and it draws me back time after time after time.

To my eyes, the subject just works, regardless of the time of day/month/season, light, colour, and even water level. Of course I think that's down to that wonderful wooden step located at the end of the pier that makes all the difference but also because the pier is not horizontal. If fact it dips down quite a bit which allows for the wooden posts at the end of the pier to sit much lower in the frame therefore opening up the space above it to be surrounded by water, even when shooting wide angle. In this instance, I used a Nisi Six Stop ND filter to slow down the water to thirty seconds. Long enough to smooth out the water perfectly.

This magnificent sight greeted us from the ferry whilst we were heading over on the two and a half hour journey to the Outer Hebrides. The water was calm, but stormy skies were brewing behind us. Taking position on the top deck of the ferry and resting the camera handheld on top of the boat's side railings allowed me to compose this shot carefully.

Scotland is known for its BIG skies and this photo embodies all that I love about Scotland. Drama, colour, emotion, not to mention stormy weather. I am writing up a blog today on my experience in spending a week on the Isle of Lewis and Harris.

Yesterday saw me arrive in the Lake District for the first time since very early March and how lovely it was standing on the edge of Surprise View at 7.30am looking out over a remarkable cloud inversion that covered Derwentwater completely.

Taken back in October 2018, this view caught my attention not least due to this wonderful wooden log that was wedged between the large boulders. Straight away I could see an interesting composition forming between the log, the wonderfully iconic red rorbuer in the background and of course the snow capped Lilandstinden mountain behind.

Lofoten looks completely different in the autumn to that in winter, obviously and both times of the year offer so many different kind of images although at this stage it is looking like I shall be sticking to running my winter workshops in Lofoten next year and leaving the autumn one off my portfolio.

If you fancy joining me for an autumn workshop here instead of a winter one for next year, let me know. Have a great Sunday evening everyone and feel free to share this image if you wish 😀

Here's another image that I have been meaning to edit for months but have only just got round to it. It is a panorama of ten vertical format images that have been stitched together in Photoshop CC. The whole file size is almost 1GB.

So I decided to walk down to the waterfall and these quite incredible huge icicles but I had to walk over the frozen water that separates where I am now to the hard ground where the snow is on the right hand side of the image. The ice was quite slushy on the surface and my snowboots were sinking into it as I walked over leaving me wondering if/when I was going to fall through. I have to confess to have tight, clenched bum cheeks for half a minute or so, lol.

But on setting up, I was memorised by the view, especially when the right side of Kirkjufell lit up from the early morning 9am sun. My good friend Duncan was about to take a shot of me in action, the photo I shall post in the comment box below.

Julie Jean, Dungeness, Kent

Back in May, during my mammoth 3,200 miles, five week road trip around the UK, I got to revisit one of the eeriest places in the UK, Dungeness.

If you have yet to visit this surreal location, I urge you to. It is a wonderful place for landscape/seascape photography and is worth spending a day wandering around with your camera.

According to Wikipedia, Dungeness is one of the largest expanses of shingles in Europe. It is of international conservation importance for its geomorphology, plant and invertebrate communities, and birdlife. This is recognised and protected mostly through its conservation designations as a national nature reserve (NNR), a Special Protection Area (SPA), a Special Area of Conservation (SAC), and part of the Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) of Dungeness, Romney Marsh, and Rye Bay.

There is a remarkable variety of wildlife living at Dungeness, with over 600 different types of plants: a third of all those found in Britain. It is one of the best places in Britain to find invertebrates such as moths, bees, beetles, and spiders; many of these are very rare, some found nowhere else in Britain.

However, there are also boats and wooden winch sheds to photograph as well. Overall, it is worth a visit. Let me know if you have visited Dungeness and what your thoughts are below if you wish.

Iceland Photography Workshop

21st-26th October 2020

melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product/iceland-northern....

After my ninth visit to Iceland this February, trying to find a fresh approach to photographing a very familiar and well known location is not easy yet that is the challenge that I love to embrace.

My tips for trying to capture an alternative perspective at this location are;

1: Visit in the winter where a wider variety of weather will provide more opportunities to capture something differently

2: Don't be afraid to get your feet wet for that particular shot

3: Go where others choose not to but ensuring that you are safe

4: Step outside of your comfort zone and challenge yourself

5: Predict what equipment you will need when stood in the river. This will reduce your stress levels in trying to sort out your kit in the middle of the river.

6: Have the right camera bag for shooting in water. I use a Mindshift Backlight 26L which opens from the rear allowing me to rotate it around my waist and keep it away from water.

7: Use your tripod as a measuring stick to gauge the depth of the water when wading into it.

8: Ensure you are wearing the right clothing. I wear an insulated pair of Aigle wellies (4mm neoprene). They allow me to stand in the freezing river for up to an hour at a time

9: Choose your moment carefully and try to ensure the least amount of people are in your frame

10: If people are in your frame, perhaps use them to best effect. Perhaps use a 10 Stop ND filter to shoot for 30 seconds to create ghostly like figures in your image.

I could spend a whole week wandering up and down the stunning Glen Brittle River on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. It is the most enchanting, magical and mysterious section of river that exists in the whole of the UK.

There are so many quaint and beautiful waterfalls that it's difficult to know which one to photograph first but back in March while leading a five day photography tour on Skye, I settled on this one while my clients were next to me composing their images.

I loved how the water in front of the waterfall was swirling around while the detail of the rock walls surrounding it were just amazing. There was so much detail. Of course the hugely imposing 2,261ft Sgurr An Fheadain that encompasses the iconic Waterpipe Gully stands proud watching over the river.

This is a location that I so enjoy returning to time after time.

Taken back in March 2017, this eight vertical stitched image panorama really highlights the wild and remoteness of the area around the emergency hut that is located at the top of a mountain pass on the spectacular Snæfellsnes Peninsula.

A few days before I was up there alone at midnight photographing the aurora borealis over his hut and sadly my vehicle got stuck in deep snow on a 45 degree angled banking by the side of the road. I was forced to sleep in the car all night until the rescue truck arrived at 9am the following morning. It was -11 throughout the night so sleeping in the hut without some form of fire/heat was not an option. Better to stay in the car and survive.

It's an incredibly harsh environment up there and if going alone at night, best to let someone know where you're going in case of trouble.

Iceland I have since found out has an incredibly useful App for your phone called 112 Iceland. This is a simple app that has two buttons. A green one that says 'Check In' in which once pressed, the call centre logs your location and a red button marked 'Emergency' which sends a text message from your phone to the call centre complete with your GPS coordinates. Even if there's no signal, a text often sends.

112 Iceland app is offered from SafeTravel which is an accident prevention project of the Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue. You can find out more here

WOW is all I have to say about these quite simply amazing HUGE 30 metre metal art sculptures that stand guard over the Forth and Cylde Canal in Scotland. I have been wanting to visit this magnificent art installation since they were created back in 2013 and boy were they worth the wait.

Firstly there are two horses on show and they represent the huge Kelpie horses that use to tow cargo on the canal many, many years before. Andy Scott the creator has done an outstanding job and I am delighted to see that the place is open 24 hours a day so that we can all enjoy them whenever we wish.

You can watch a one hour documentary on how they were designed and built. It's well worth a watch. www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQvVrem2sYw

A 7 minute timelapse on their construction can be viewed here vimeo.com/90747645

I love visiting one of my favourite little local haunts, the fishing wrecks in Fleetwood.

I have been visiting these wrecks since 2010 and I have seen a change in the landscape here, mostly the wrecks themselves. There are the remains of several fishing vessels but I would say three full size ones remain largely intact, two metal and one wood.

They are positioned by the River Wyre estuary, which is a location full of deep muddy gullies which during a fairly high tide, fill up and spill over with the incoming tide covering all of the land, making it very difficult to navigate your way around without falling into the gullies.

On this particular evening, the sky was crystal clear and the stars shone like Swarovski diamonds and so I could not refuse an opportunity to head out for a few hours alone to capture these wrecks on camera. Sadly the 8.1 metre tide was not nearly high enough to fill even the gullies (you need a 9 metre tide for that at least) but it was magical just being out on my own with nothing but the sounds of the birds flying overhead and the odd plane overhead.

I have a real love affair with wooden jetties, even ones that are damaged to the recent floods and this section of just one of the jetties at Derwentwater stood out to me as I was setting up my camera to take a different scene.

The heavy mist on Tuesday morning (6am) provided me with the perfect opportunity to capture a beautiful and simple scene. This was my first visit to the Lake District since early March and oh how I have missed its beauty.
