WOW, WOW, WOW
KP5 Aurora Borealis over the 200ft Skogafoss Waterfall, Iceland (midnight Sat 14th Oct 2017)
I have been wanting to capture the aurora over Skogafoss for a couple of years now and last night my dream became a reality.
I took my clients out to one of Iceland's most famous waterfalls around 10pm and for two hours we waited until the show built up into what you see here. The waterfall was lit by two head torches over a 30 second period which allows it to really stand out from the much darker rock and foliage around it.

I love this castle. It sits high up on a basalt rock outcrop and looks fantastic from the shoreline. This was our second location on my five day North-West & Giant's Causeway, Ireland workshop that finished yesterday.
To reach this viewpoint you have to climb over the castle's walkway handrail and down a steep sided grassy section and along a few few boulders but it is definitely worth the effort. I cannot wait to return October 2018 to run this workshop again but I'll be heading down to the Dingle area end of next Feb 2018. More details to follow in the coming days.

This afternoon, I spent a good few minutes looking through the images I took back in Lofoten in February 2020 while running a week long workshop there.
I then come across this little beauty from a morning drive to Hamnoy and wondered quite why I did not edit it all those months ago although in truth, I have thousands of images still to look through but it is rather lovely to find a jewel like this.
Looking at this scenery, you can understand why I love Norway in the winter as much as I do. It's so calming, serene and peaceful. It's the perfect place to spend a winter in my honest opinion. I hope you all like it too.

Sunwapta Falls, Jasper National Park, Canadian Rockies
In January 2020, I had the privilege to visit the awesome Canadian Rockies for sixteen days of pure full on winter landscape photography in temperatures down to -39°c.
This is Sunwapta Falls, a hugely popular and impressive waterfall. The roar of the water that flows underneath you is deafening but amazing to witness all the same.

COME & JOIN ME on my Lofoten Northern Lights Workshop
12th-18th Nov 2020 : £1,495

Uttakleiv Beach turned out to be my favourite beach in Lofoten without a shadow of a doubt. Having primarily visited the beach to find and photograph the iconic and world famous 'monster's eye' rock pool (which I did), my thoughts turned to other compositions that lay in wait nearby. I did not have to wait long.
A few metres to the left of the monster's eye had these amazing rock formations catch my eye and my attention for an hour or so. I really did not want to leave when the time came but rest assured that when I return in November to run my workshop, Uttakleiv shall demand my upmost attention and quite happily so too.
In this image, the light fast fading fast as the end of the day arrived all too quickly. The skies darkened with what appeared to be an impending storm and the waves rushed towards me through the narrow channel between the stunning dark rocks. I felt energised, excited and enthused to just be standing there witnessing such beauty. It was at this very point that Lofoten captured my heart, mind and soul. What an experience.

At 9.30pm last night, despite feeling all cosy and sleepy while sitting at home in my super comfortable lounge reclining chair. I opted to drag myself off out with a good friend of mine and astrophotographer Stephen Cheatley. The destination was Grin Low Hill, a reasonable 90-minute drive from Preston where I live and the subject that I wanted to photograph was this wonderful 124-year-old Victorian folly called Solomon's Temple.
This folly is built on a raised neolithic burial mound and affords 360-degree views from the upper floor. The reason for my visit was to capture the Neowise Comet alongside it but on arrival at 11pm, the cloud had already started rolling in. I did not have long to find a decent composition, set up my Canon EOS R and my tripod and fire off some shots before the cloud completely enveloped the comet.
A handful of minutes later, the shutter release cable button clicked and the view on the LCD screen had me feel elated for the scene looked absolutely stunning. I used my headtorch to subtly light paint the folly.
For those interested, this is just one single exposure. I am delighted with the location and it was my aim to visit it a few weeks ago during the lightning storms but they failed to materialise but I shall return on the next big storm.
I hope you like the image and thanks to my good buddy Stephen for keeping me company (social distancing observed and we drove in separate cars for those interested).

Every now and then after editing an image I sit back and feel genuinely moved inside. It is not often that an image stops me in my tracks and has me feel quite emotional but for some strange reason, this one has done that to me tonight.
When it happens I'll be the first to admit that it catches me off guard and I am quite unprepared for it. This panoramic image has truly reminded me quite succinctly why I became a landscape photographer in the first place. The view when I was stood there was outstanding and one of the reasons why I fell utterly in love with the Assynt region of Scotland (upper north-west) but having stitched the seven images together and seen it in all its glory, I think it even surpasses what I felt when I was actually stood there.
I hope you enjoy looking at it as much as I did capturing it on camera.

I shot this image while leading a workshop on Skye recently, this is one of my favourite trees in the whole of the UK. It's tenacity to survive is quite extraordinary. To thrive and grow year on year on the edge of a rocky ridge even during the harshest of winters is super impressive and it reminds me of the resilience of nature and how it always finds a way to survive, develop and grow.
To capture this shot, the camera has to be placed lower than yourself and the tilting LCD screen of my Canon EOS R was perfectly created for such shots and it made the experience in shooting this scene all the more manageable.

Winter can present some amazing conditions to photograph in, such as this scene here at Twistleton Scar in North Yorkshire, which overlooks the north end of the Ingleton Falls walk.
It's a barren place, is extremely exposed with high winds often whipping over the limestone pavements as these Hawthorn trees clearly demonstrate by the direction that they have grown in. The walk takes around 25 minutes from the free roadside layby (What3Words location info. dispenser.tweaked.spilling), simply follow the paths eastwards past the opening for the path that takes you down to the Ingleton Falls on your right. Go through the kissing gate and follow the path until you reach a little signpost on your left.
Turn back on yourself up the path next to the signpost as it zig-zags up the hillside until you reach the trees at the top. It's a reasonably steep walk up so take your time. Be careful walking on the limestone rocks as one slip could very easily result in a broken ankle/leg, especially when it's slippery due to snow and ice.

Life After Dark, from Bennetts Bluff, Queenstown, New Zealand
Here's an image that I captured back in Sept 2018 after photographing a truly outstanding sunset from this position at Bennetts Bluff. The road down to Glenorchy was filled with plenty of traffic and I thought it was the perfect opportunity to capture something a little different for me.
New Zealand was amazing during the twelve days that I spent there with outstanding light and colour throughout the whole trip. I have visited New Zealand four times now since 2003 and it never fails to amaze me. What a country to visit and photograph.

Mottled Clouds at Sunrise, Quiraing, Skye
On the first morning on my recent Skye workshop, I took my clients up to the Quiraing for sunrise. The forecast was reasonable and on arriving at 6am, it soon became clear that a little bit of magic might just happen.
Fast forward a few minutes and after we had all set up our cameras and tripods, the colour intensified and spread right the way across the horizon while lighting up the gorgeous mottled clouds above. It looked magnificent and a worthy reminder to head out regardless of the weather forecast because on the odd occasion that the weather actually provides the goods, it is always worth being on location ready to take advantage of it.
I am really looking forward to returning to Skye in March 2023. If you would like to join me, click the link below. melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product/isle-of-skye-sco...

Yesterday, I ran a workshop in the Lake District and I opted to meet my clients at 5am in order to arrive and be on location at Waterhead for sunrise (6am).
To my delight, there was a tremendous amount of mist present on the lake and the background was completely devoid which perfectly isolated the boats. It was absolutely gorgeous and so peaceful too. My clients Lisa, Dave and Gary really enjoyed the experience in being out at the crack of dawn witnessing and photographing the incredible beauty that the Lake District offers all year round.
Here is an image I captured while we all stood there honing our compositions and techniques. HUGE THANKS to Lisa, Dave and Gary for joining me on what was a really enjoyable and fun day.

This scene really did look as amazing as you see it here. The vibrancy of the rainbow is genuine. My clients, who were with me this week can confirm. It was astonishing to see perhaps the brightest rainbow that I have ever seen.
Heavy rain clouds were passing overhead all afternoon and you just had to choose your moment quickly and efficiently move into position and keep your head knowing that you perhaps only have a single minute to get the shot and that's if you're lucky.
Skye has been incredibly generous to me this autumn where rainbows are concerned but this one is particularly special to me.

Dramatic Skies Over Ribblehead Viaduct, Yorkshire Dales
I ventured out with my camera late afternoon yesterday to capture a gorgeous copse of trees that I know near Settle when having got the shot that I wanted, I noticed storm clouds developing so I jumped in the car and drove 30 minutes westwards to Ribblehead Viaduct.
I wandered ten minutes along the path to the far end of the viaduct as I wanted to capture the lowest part of the cloud to the right of the viaduct itself. The setting sun cast a gorgeous yellow colour in the clouds on the right of the view while the rest dominated due to their darkness. I have to confess that it did look epic.

Moke Lake turned out to be one of my favourite locations in the south island of New Zealand for a couple of reasons.
Firstly it is located a short twenty minute drive from the centre of Queenstown and secondly it is remote and light pollution free. It's also very quiet too assuming that there are no campervans around with frisky, inebriated campers in them as I discovered at midnight the night before. I did feel like I was gate crashing a date night, ha, ha.
Anyhow, on this particular visit, I brought my client Alan along to experience this wonderful location and to our surprise, low lying mist was present and at times quite a lot of it too. It certainly helped to add atmosphere which is usually fine by me. Thankfully the wind hung off disrupting the water just about long enough to capture this panorama image, which incidentally is made up of eleven vertical format images stitched together in Photoshop CC.
I hope you enjoy looking at the image as much as I did capturing it on location. It turned out to be another magical moment in New Zealand with my camera.
Have a great Tuesday folks

On Tuesday, I decided to visit the Lake District for the first time since early March and I was greeted by some glorious conditions. Admittedly, blanket mist, which hid everything from fifty-foot in front of me does not sound like the weather of choice for most people but to me, as I stood there at the water's edge of Derwentwater, it was sublime.
I arrived at Waterhead in Windermere at 4am for a sunrise shoot before moving onto Derwentwater. I absolutely love misty weather and can always be found photographing a boat or a pier in such conditions. Woodlands also make great subjects to shoot too in such conditions.
Lady Derwentwater, this gorgeous 1930's passenger craft that carries over 90 people, normally glides up and down the three-mile-long lake but it is best to arrive early to photograph it before she goes into service for the day.
Here's a pub quiz question for you.
How many lakes are in the Lake District?
Answer: Just the one, Bassenthwaite. The rest are either meres, waters or tarns. Derwentwater is, of course, a 'water'.

I set the camera up to capture this Canadian Pacific goods train during a fast shutter speed to freeze it in motion before changing the settings in camera to capture a long exposure image of the train before it disappeared altogther. Quite often these trains are so long, that they take a good two to three minutes to pass by. Isn't that remarkable?
This was a Sunday morning during an extreme cold spell in the Rockies. The red and green double stacked carriages helped give the train some impact when set against the bright white snow behind. The sound of these trains is amazing and encapsulates all that is great about Canada.

WOW! WOW! WOW!
I have seen some amazing waterfalls in my time travelling the world with my camera but Slap Pericnik is one of the finest I have seen. Its location for a start is outstanding, nestling in the valley of the Triglav National Park in the far north of Slovenia but the fact that it is a ten-minute walk from the car park and that you are able to walk behind it and look out over the gorgeous scenery in front of you is inspiring.
I wanted to capture it in a way that shows off the amazing scenery that surrounds the waterfall and so I opted to shoot a panoramic image comprising of nine vertical images, overlapping each one by around 30% and stitching them together in Photoshop CC. Thank heavens I have just purchased a high-performance laptop (Acer Predator Helios 300 for those interested) to edit my images on because nine 128MB images would have killed my previous laptop for sure.
What were the main challenges of shooting this scene?
Without a doubt, water. If it was not constantly dripping down onto the camera equipment and I from the overhanging cliff above me, it was the moisture created from the sheer force of the water hitting the rocks below at great force. The wind then carried the moisture towards me and my camera and because of that, I was required to wipe the lens after each shot.
But all the effort and patience required to capture it on camera was all worth it because for me, the waterfall and its setting needed to be shown in all its glory and shooting a panorama of nine images was the only way and the result has exceeded my expectations.

As someone who grew up by the sea (Blackpool) I have to confess that I have a real soft spot for seascape photography. There's something about photographing the ocean, the water, the beach complete with all the sounds and smells of life that triggers all of my senses. It fills me with a sense of belonging.
There is something magical about standing on a beach watching a living, breathing entity existing right in front of you. I often close my eyes and from a safe distance, listen to the waves crashing in front of me. The power of the ocean I rarely take for granted for obvious reasons and yet I love feeling part of it. It can be stimulating and calming at different locations and even at different times depending on how I feel.
Here is an image that I captured back in February during my week long trip to the truly stunning Lofoten in Norway. Haukland Beach, along with its neighbour Uttakleiv Beach, became my favourite beaches in Lofoten and I am sure you can see why. The colour of the water, the huge dramatic skies and the waves crashing onto the beach made for a very special visit indeed.
I cannot wait to return and while my November 2019 workshop is now full, I will be creating another one for the winter of early 2020 shortly. If you would like to put your name down on my waiting list, please contact me.
Have a wonderful evening everyone.

Beach Hut in the Snow, Rambergstranda Beach, Lofoten, Norway
Now that I am home from Slovenia and quarantining for ten days (I'm on day six), I am looking at images from locations that I have previously visited and places that I should be heading to shortly, such as Lofoten in Norway.
Lofoten has become one of my favourite winter destinations for a variety of reasons but ultimately, it is because the archipelago somehow manages to combine peace and serenity with dramatic scenery including near vertical mountains, open blue waters of the ocean and gorgeous sheltered fishing bays and towns.
This viewpoint is a very familiar one for those of you who have visited it. This is the lone beach hut on Rambergstranda Beach surrounded by glistening white snow and the gorgeous snow covered hills near Ytresand in the background.
Lofoten is very popular with those who like to keep their hiking/physically activity to a minimum for most of the locations are located close to the roadside but the trick to a successful trip to Lofoten is relying on an experienced photography tour guide to get you to the right places at the right time while taking into account the weather conditions, which can change quickly.
I shall be launching my 2022 workshops shortly but for those wanting a warmer climate, I am running a six night workshop to Lofoten 11th-17th November 2021. Mind you, it did snow during my November 2019 but the temperatures are higher than in February. I only have three places left for this November.

Morant's Curve, Banff National Park, The Canadian Rockies

I took this long exposure shot of the Canadian Pacific Railway Train at Morant's Curve on Sunday morning during an extreme cold spell in the Rockies. I decided to shoot this slow shutter image of the Canadian Pacific Railway Train as I thought it looked interesting when set against some stunning scenery. The red and green double-stacked carriages make for a really interesting trail.

Cracked Ice, Abraham Lake, Kootenay Plains, Canadian Rockies
Twelve months ago, I was in The Canadian Rockies on a sixteen day trip. The first eight days were spent scouting out locations for an eight day workshop that followed afterwards. It is fair to say that the temperatures were absolutely freezing.
This image was taken on my penultimate day in the Canadian Rockies which had me drive my clients 90 minutes north to the iconic Abraham Lake. It was cold and reasonably busy although on arriving an hour or so before sunrise, there were only a couple of other cars parked up by the roadside, however within five minutes of us arriving, a dozen others had arrived. News of my visit must have spread quickly, ha, ha.
So we wandered down onto the ice, complete with micro-spikes on the bottom of my snow boots for grip. Trying to find a section of ice that had perfectly formed methane bubbles was tough and I was not entirely happy with all the different patterns that I saw so I concentrated instead on this wonderful opened ice section. It lent itself perfectly to a portrait format so I explained to John, my client the wonders of focus stacking and promptly demonstrated the technique as well as guiding him to capture a similar image.
This image consists of five images focus stacked. I think it worked out rather well. What do you think?

WOW, WOW, WOW, what a sunrise I was treated to in Iceland back in October last year. I cannot wait to return this October.
I have longed to capture the beautiful sights of the sea stacks of Vik with some wonderful colour and on this particular morning, my wish was granted.
I positioned myself on the beach to catch the rising sun and shooting at f16, I ensured that it would starburst as soon as it made an appearance. It was also important to me to capture the streaks of water on the beach which would reflect the golden light and colours beautifully.

Reynisdrangar, Reynisfjara Beach, Vik, Iceland
A bit of black and white for tonight's offering. Taken back in February while leading my winter workshop in Iceland, These stunning Reynisdrangar sea stacks always look spectacular when set against an interesting sky but it is the crashing waves of the North Atlantic Ocean that interest me.
This is a really beautiful beach to spend time on and the contrast between the white foamy water when set against the dark black very small pebbled beach is impressive. Because the beach features the small pebbles, the white foam sinks below the surface incredibly quickly, which allows the photographer a lovely, clean shot without white foamy residue being present.
I am already really looking forward to returning to Iceland to run three workshops in October and November this year. I have a limited number of places available on my 26th Nov-1st Dec 2022 Iceland workshop if anyone is interested.

Clichéd, St Anne's Pier, Lancashire
So I spent an hour or so at St Anne's shooting the pier and the old section of pier during the highest tide of the year. It was a 10 metre tide as it turns out and I have been after this image for a number of years now. It is rare that the tide comes in and surrounds the main pier and so when a very high tide is offered, you have to head down to capture it on camera.
The issue was, that every man and his dog were out too, enjoying the mini heatwave and glorious conditions but in shooting long exposure images, everybody disappeared from shot. I managed to purchase this used deck chair from a local Facebook seller and I collected it en-route to St Anne's.
I know the shot is a cliché one but I have the same image without the deck chair as well. The sky was absolutely featureless with no clouds in sight and for once, I did not mind as it places all the focus on the chair and piers. If you have been out and about today, I hope you enjoyed it. Life is precious and to be experienced.

Another brand new edit from my time spent in Lofoten back in February this year. I had ventured down to the water's edge to photograph the broken ice by the shoreline until the light started to fade at which point I made our way across the road and on top of a hillock to give me a little bit of elevation.
This is the scene that I saw as I set up. I could see that the cars were travelling in both directions over the road bridges and as the light dropped, this produced some really lovely light trails. I especially enjoy the ones caught in the background on the left hand side as that is the main road from Leknes to Reine.
The backdrop is the impressively striking Volanstinden mountain. Isn't it just a stunning place?
If you would like to join me in photographing this amazing landscape for yourself, come with me in February 2020. Places are selling fast and I only have four left.
You will have your own room in a stunning seven bedroom wooden house by the ocean near Ramberg complete with two kitchens and two lounges. It really is a fantastic opportunity to spend some time in one of the finest locations on this side of the world.

UK & International Landscape Photography Workshops & Tours www.melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/photography-workshops
There are certain places that you feel compelled to visit and photograph to the best of your ability and Bodiam Castle has long hovered somewhere around the top of my UK wish list for a good few years now.
I had an opportunity to visit it with a couple of friends of mine, Steve and June, on day 17 of my recent 26 day tour of the UK. We arrived a few minutes before sunset having just consumed a lovely meal in the Castle Inn pub across the road.
The colours were present on arrival and a quick set up of the wonderfully symmetrical castle (it must have been created for landscape photographers with a slight OCD tendency for symmetrical objects, lol) and it's beautiful wooden walkway to the front of the castle. We were treated to some wonderful subtle colours in the sky and this was one of those moments where I just stood there drinking in the happy feelings in finally ticking this castle off my list.
I hope you all like the photo and have a great weekend everyone.

FOUR DAY LAKE DISTRICT AUTUMN WORKSHOP
Tues 31st October - Fri 3rd November 2017 £795
www.melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product/lake-distric...
Good evening everyone and I have been delving back into the archives for tonight's image as I am so busy putting the final touches on a lot of exciting events that I will be able to reveal in the coming days.
So, onto the image in question. I have been photographing this scene for over ten years now and I never, EVER tire of it. It's the beautiful Castle Crag (the small triangular fell in the centre distance which incidentally just so happens to be the lowest Wainwright that exists).
This shot was captured during a workshop back in late October 2016 when all of the wonderful autumnal colours were out in full bloom. I have deliberately gone for a long exposure to smooth out the water which for me suits the scene wonderfully well. Long exposure images also tend to pull out the available colour too which generally allows for a more impactful image. The sky was fantastic too. Real drama present.
I hope you like it. p.s. note the white bird on the post?

WOW, WOW, WOW, the weather conditions today were so difficult to shoot in with the wind so incredibly strong that it was blowing the water BACK UP THE FALLS.
Positioning myself in the middle of the river, the current wanting to wipe me off my feet whilst the wind tried to lift me up off my feet, the possibility of shooting long exposure was not an option but I had already decided to shoot short exposure to capture the water being blown back up over the falls.
I filmed a short video of the wind in another post below. I hope you all like it :D

JOIN ME on my Five Day Northern Lights Iceland Workshop
15th - 20th October 2020
melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product-category/iceland...
Today is day five (Tues 21st March 2017) since I returned from Iceland but with the hustle and bustle of attending The Photography Show over the weekend in my role as a Haida filter Ambassador and also presenting a talk on the Fotospeed paper stand, it's only now that things have settled down a little and I have a few hours to reflect on the amazing sixteen days that I spent in Iceland (1st-16th March).
I have been looking through my images wondering which one to edit and it's so damn difficult when you have a hard drive full of amazing locations to choose from. However, I eventually settled on this seven image panorama stitch photograph of the utterly spellbinding Kirkjufell mountain and waterfalls.
I arrived at sunset and struggled to park in the car park below but eventually, I got parked and a few minutes later I set up while admiring this view. There are moments in a year that you remember at the end of the year and look back on with such fondness and inspiration and I strongly suspect that this scene will be one such memory that will linger for some time to come.
The colours in the sky lit up as the setting sun to the left of the mountain grew ever increasingly stronger. The colours of the pink sky on the right reflected in the ice below in the river and I vividly remember just standing there and looking left to right and back to left again thinking just how fortunate I am to be a professional landscape photographer and more so because a week later I would get the opportunity to enjoy the view too.

I love waterfalls, large ones, small ones, it doesn't matter and sometimes, as in this case, the smaller the better. Cauldron Falls in a wonderful series of small waterfalls that lie in the River Etive that nestles in the dark autumnal red and brown bracken of Rannoch Moor.
This photograph was taken at the end of a session with my clients in which I was demonstrating the effectiveness of using a wide angle lens, which is something that I am partial to using.

I decided to visit this gorgeous little loch on the Glen Etive road for the first time on Tuesday ahead of my four day workshop which started yesterday.
One of the best perks of being a professional landscape photographer is that I get to visit and check out some amazing locations before incorporating them into a workshop. This loch is located on one of the finest roads I know, a twelve-mile journey down to Glen Etive loch. In fact, this road is so well loved that Daniel Craig parked his old Aston Martin up on the road and got out to chat with Judi Dench in the James Bond movie Skyfall.
But for me, I was after some magic and it eventually came as the light danced in and out through the clouds lighting up the mountains in the distance. I fell in love with this place so much so that I returned today with my clients.

I cannot wait to return to the Dolomites in early October to run my 2019 autumn workshop because views like these are what await me and my clients.
On a personal level, last year's visit to the Dolomites completely blew me away. The scale and sheer beauty of the mountainous area is like nothing I have seen in Europe. It's mind-blowing and breathtaking all at the same time.
Take this location here, Lago Antorno. Easy parking and as near as damn it, shot by the roadside. It is just mountain peak after mountain peak after mountain peak and all reflected in the most beautiful lake too. Get me back there as soon as possible I'd say although I do have a little matter of a two week spell in the Canadian Rockies starting next Saturday to take care of first.

I have really enjoyed spending some time this afternoon looking through and editing my images from yesterday's one day workshop I ran in the Lake District.
Here's another image captured at sunrise at Waterhead, Windermere. The water was incredibly still and the mist swirled all around the lake. It was one of those mornings that excites a landscape photographer and I am no different. I was practically doing an Irish jig which is not to be admired as my dancing skills are matched only by my singing voice 😁
How lovely of the bird to come in and photobomb the photo too.
I hope you all like it.

OH WOW!!! This place completely blew me away when I visited it in the rain recently. Having walked down the steep steps via the boardwalk to the wooden viewing platform, I immediately knew that the shot that I wanted was further forward. Thankfully I decided to wear wellies and boy did they sure come in handy.
The sheer thunderous roar of all that water tipping over the 30 metre rocky edge invoked a sense of amazement but it was the view of the waterfall though the surrounding trees that won me over for they helped to frame the main subject perfectly.

What a sunrise we had in Vik back in February. Sunrises occur just before 10am at that time of the year which allows for a lie in and some breakfast before waiting patiently for the light to slowly rise behind this wonderful church which is amazingly positioned high up on a hillside surrounded by higher hills.

Well what a day we have had today. We started the day off by leaving the cottage at Uig in Lewis at 7.10am in pitch blackness only to head south to the salt marshes at Northton which are located right in the south of Harris.
It took almost two long hours to drive the amazing roads that they have here on the island to reach these amazing sections of salt marshes which while tricky to navigate across the five foot wide waters between sections of grass, they offer some fantastic compositions..
Ceapabhal, the 368 metre hill in the distance stands solid under a heavy stormy sky but it completes a wonderful composition for me. I hope you all like it.

This gorgeous wooden church called Ingjaldshólskirkja nestles on the hugely photogenic Snaefellsnes Peninsula in western Iceland.
This image was captured during this year's fierce winter in February. On this particular day, the weather had calmed down enough for us to spend a little bit of time lining up the shot using the road as an obvious but welcome lead in.
One word of warning though, the local farmer will not stop for you if he's driving down the road so be sure to step aside quickly.

Iceland Photography Workshop
21st-26th October 2020

The amazing aurora borealis at the iconic black and white Budir Church on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula in Iceland.
I captured this incredible scene while running a workshop in Iceland October 2019 but I have only just got round to editing more of my images from that wonderful trip.
While my clients were setting up their cameras, I fired off this shot of the church with a mesmorising aurora above it. I opted to shoot from this angle to include as much of the northern lights as I possibly could.
Every time I see the faint glow of the green light building in the sky, my heartbeat quickens, my eyes widen and the excitement I feel is addictive. I feel like a child on Christmas morning whenever the lights dance and light up the sky.
Aren't they just the most amazing sight? Have you seen the aurora borealis for yourself and if so, where in the world did you see it?

Last night, as dusk was setting in, a predicted almighty thunderstorm finally struck and I had an hour or so to head out before my evening meal in a local restaurant. So I quickly donned my hiking boots, waterproof jacket, camera bag, and tripod and I drove a couple of miles up the road and set up the camera in a layby under the tailgate of the car while trying to shelter from the rain.
As the storm intensified, so did my hopes for capturing a decent lightning strike as they were going off all around me. It wasn't until I reviewed my images when loading my equipment back in my car did I see this shot of a strike hit either behind the chapel or indeed strike the bell tower, which is located to the rear of the chapel.
Either way, what a fantastic experience to have captured some fork lightning over such an iconic location in Tuscany. I hope you all like it too.

There are just certain places in this world of ours that leave you almost speechless. Of course, considering how much I can talk, the view has to be pretty exceptional and this one when stood by the shoreline of Lake Antorno in the Dolomites while watching the sun drop behind me lighting up the summit of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo across the water is one such view.
Isn't it just amazing? I wanted this shot on my previous visit back in October 2018 but having found a new and improved vantage point, I am absolutely delighted to have captured this scene.

Sunset Moon Over Plover Scar Lighthouse, Lune Estuary, Cockerham, Lancashire
Last week, I was sat at my computer looking at Google Maps and trying to figure out where I should visit for sunset, keeping locations as local as is possible. I was reminded of a lovely little lighthouse which is infrequently photographed by locals called Plover Scar.
I looked back through my photo albums on my hard drive to find that the last time I visited this remote part of Lancashire was in fact March 2012, a whole nine years ago. I was flabbergasted as it only felt like a handful of years ago.
So I checked the weather forecast, sunset times and tide times and found that the forecast looked great with a real chance of some colour and high tide was due around twenty minutes before sunset. So I threw my camera bag, tripod and wellies in the car and drove off with an hour or so to go. I arrived in the car park (via a seriously rutted road that almost promised to rip the floor off my car (I would not have been happy at all but I took the chance all the same) and before long, I was striding out towards the lighthouse across wet sand and slippery algae covered rocks.
Fifteen minutes later, I was at a lovely little bay that was filled with salt water that was slowly receding as the tide started ebbing out. I set up the tripod and the camera and went for a wander to check out various viewpoints but in reality, I knew that this one would be the one to focus on (so to speak). As the water slowly retreated, the sun dropped behind the horizon, subtle clouds rolled in and the colour started, intensifying with each passing minute until the scene you see below.
I had forgotten what it was like to witness and capture on camera a gorgeous sunset for it felt like years since I last saw one. I was alone on arrival but within fifteen minutes, a handful of other local folk walked up to the lighthouse, took a quick snap on their cameras, including the obligatory selfie shots and promptly disappeared, leaving me to enjoy this view all alone.
It is times like this that I am reminded just how fortunate I am to do what I do for a living (tour the world with my camera running photo workshops and tours). It sure beats my previous vocation in nursing and health care. Here's looking forward to the remainder of 2021 and the increased level of freedom that we shall enjoy as we go.
