If there's one thing that I love shooting, it's coastal scenes. Water is something that excites me, especially the ocean because it's in a constant state of movement. I have so many options in deciding how to shoot the ocean, short exposure, long exposure or perhaps quick exposure (just as you see it with your own eyes).

If you throw into the mix a sea stack or two, I am one happy Melvin. I grew up in Blackpool, the home of three piers which also offer me many different options when shooting them (they're only twenty minutes from where I live in Preston) but the wonders of the natural.landscape simply cannot be beaten.

I have started to write a blog on my travels around Ireland from a couple of weeks ago and I hope to have that ready to read by Friday night but until then, please enjoy this scene and try to imagine sitting there on the edge of the cliff looking down on what mother nature has given us. For me, I could not have been happier.

Have a great Thursday everyone.

I love this lovely old wrecked boat that nestles on the sandy beach at Bunbeg. On this visit earlier in May, the tide was incoming and was surrounding the boat on our arrival.

WOW, what a place the Butt of Lewis is. Yes, it's a pain in the 'butt' to reach as it is located right at the very top of the Outer Hebrides but boy is the drive worth it.

This shot was taken back in November last year while leading the first of two back-to-back workshops on the island. I was demonstrating how to take several images while focusing through the various lengths of the frame with the view of stacking them together in Photoshop CC in a technique called Focus Stacking.

This particular image only has three frames stacked together and it was necessary to focus stack as the foreground interest in the grass and rocks that you can see were only around 12" away from me. I was positioned as low down as I could go while maintaining a safe position from the edge.

It is a location that you could spend all day at should you ever decide to visit.

I am really looking forward to returning to Harris and Lewis to run two back to back workshops in November. If you're interested in joining me (assuming that everything is back to normal by then. Fingers crossed), click on the link below for details.

Four DAY LAKE DISTRICT AUTUMN WORKSHOP

Tues 31st October - Fri 3rd November 2017 £795

www.melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product/lake-distric...

I was up at Blea Tarn yesterday running a landscape photography workshop for four people when I decided to take them to this lovely little gem of a place. It's a stunning little series of waterfalls along the beck of Bleamoss that empties from Blea Tarn. It's only a ten-minute walk from the main tarn and yet I wonder how many people know of its existence?

I was demonstrating to Sue how to capture this scene safely and effectively. Crouching down on the rocks over the edge of the twenty-foot drop takes careful planning as you don't want to go over but the views are beautiful. I love this waterfall that comes in from the bottom right corner of the image only to hit the rock below and bounce back right.

The colours were wonderful too and in the overcast conditions, they seemed to be so vibrant. Definitely an area worth exploring in more detail. I hope you all like it :D

While I freely acknowledge that I am no wildlife photographer, I do on the odd occasion have a desire to capture on camera something that tinkles me and that definitely includes the hairy Highland Coos (cows).

I, like many people, find them hugely photogenic and they seem to possess an outgoing character not really seen in regular cows. Mind you, have eight of them surrounding your minibus once on location and have them bellow and growl (do these cows growl? lol), then they take on a different look, definitely more menacing than the cute facial hair would show.

Taken during a one-day workshop I was leading on Sunday 16th July 2017 in the really beautiful part of North Wales.

I saw these two wonderful trees by the side of the river and realised that by standing in the middle of the river itself, that both trees would lift themselves clear of their surroundings and stand free within the blue sky.

The water that I was stood in was around 8" in depth and the power was so evident as I could feel it constantly push against me but I am pleased that I carried on until I was really happy with that I came away with.

I hope you all like the image. Feel free to share it if you wish

WOW, what a beach. Have you ever heard of the world famous Luskentyre Beach? It's vast, desolate and utterly gorgeous. The colour palette between the blues of the sky, the gorgeous aqua green of the water, the lush yellows of the sandy beach and the vibrant multicoloured rock formations that stand guard on the perimeter of the beach are just simply amazing.

I had really wanted to visit the Isle of Lewis and Harris and experience what those who had been before me had experienced. Harris is the much smaller part of the single island whereas Lewis occupies most of the land, however Harris has the stunning sandy beaches and Lewis has the towering cliffs and fabulous sea stacks. Collectively, both parts of the island provide the landscape photographer with not only images to treasure for a lifetime but also the memories created in doing so. It really is a spectacular place.

Bloody hell, this image ranks in my top three most difficult locations I have photographed EVER!!!

Having visited this wonderful 130ft cave waterfall three days before last Saturday for the first time, my workshop clients and I vowed to revisit sunset on the following Tuesday instead as it was too busy to capture it without people. So imagine our surprise on arriving in the dark on the Tuesday evening to find a dozen people in there all trying to shoot selfies, lol.

Anyway, the sheer constant water that was being blown straight into our faces had them bid a hasty retreat. We then very quickly got to work by setting up the cameras complete with see through shower caps covering the camera for it was literally like standing under a shower. The constant stream of water drenched us through and beyond the capabilities of the waterproof clothing and yet the Canon 5D MK4 coped amazingly well.

So here is my final image showcasing this wonderful waterfall that drops down into a cave. It was shot at ISO800 so it's a little noisy but I do not care, I finally captured this waterfall a little differently to the vast majority of the shots seen on social media. I used an LED Lenser head torch to light up the water and surrounding rock walls.

I love sand patterns and there are few beaches that provide a better opportunity to capture them than Skagsanden in beautiful Lofoten in Norway.

This was taken during my photo tour back in October. I could sit and look at this image for hours. It was taken during the very last throws of light during dusk and I managed to get the tripod set up before the light fell altogether.

Four DAY LAKE DISTRICT AUTUMN WORKSHOP

Tues 31st October - Fri 3rd November 2017 £795

www.melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product/lake-distric...

This has to be one of my favourite images I have shot this year. Why?

Well, despite having visited Cathedral Cavern numerous times before (a gorgeous huge man-made slate cavern/cave in the Lake District) I felt that I was able to find something 'new' to capture on camera and the feeling I get when I have managed to come away with something that 'works' and sits well with me, is fantastic.

Whilst I was leading a two-person workshop yesterday, I felt in the 'zone' whilst showing two regular clients around this impressive hidden gem. The light was strong enough to pull out the detail, shapes, contours, detail and colours out of the rocks and foliage but not too strong as to completely overwhelm the place. Light is such an important element of landscape photography, in fact for me, THE most important element that quite often, a location that you visit often can look so different depending on the time of day/month/year you visit as well as the different weather conditions you can experience.

That's just one of the reasons why I love being a full-time, professional landscape photographer.

I am running a couple of workshops in the Lake District later this year.

WOW, what another stunning day in Lancashire, that's two in a row now. I spent yesterday on a 1-2-1 tuition day on the Blackpool/Fleetwood coast and the same today while leading a one-day long exposure workshop for four people.

Central Pier is easily my favourite of the three that adorn the Blackpool seafront and it dates back to 1863 which makes it 154 years old. Quite an achievement considering the battering it takes during the winter period but on a gorgeous day like today, it looks fantastic. It has several rides on top including the magnificent ferris wheel which I have caught here at just four seconds which gives it a look of motion which I like.

Have a wonderful Bank Holiday weekend everyone. I hope you enjoy whatever you have planned. Me? Staying home watching F1 from Monaco (I'm a huge F1 fan).

I was assisting my 1-2-1 client yesterday down at Ashness Bridge when having made sure that Andrew bagged himself a beauty, I then shot this scene. Andrew saw the potential in the scene that you can see and between us, we ended up with this composition of this lovely old stone packhorse bridge.

It is located on the road to Watendlath which starts opposite the iconic Ashness Landing Pier. The bridge is very tight and care must be taken when driving over it yet it draws large numbers of people daily who want to capture it on camera. I'm happy enough with the composition.

What do you think?

I forgot to post this image weeks ago of Crummock Water as taken on my recent four-day Lake District workshop in the Lakes at the end of October.

I decided to take my clients to Crummock Water mid afternoon as I knew that the light would illuminate this beautiful little island and have it stand out among the darker backdrop of Mellbreak Fell behind.

I walked to the highest point of the surrounding land in order to give me enough elevation to have the tips of the trees on the island rest lower than the waterline of Mellbreak behind. I love isolating my subjects within water, be it a jetty, trees or even an island.

WOW, what a day to choose to run a one day workshop in the glorious Yorkshire Dales yesterday. I got to enjoy some stunning weather with three clients of mine and the buttercups, stone barns and the rolling green dales of Yorkshire never looked so good.

The scene in this photo awaits you on walking through a few houses in the very centre of the village of Muker. Go through the gate and stand and admire such beauty. The buttercups are out at this time of the year but not for long. The sight of a million yellow flowers helps bring the scene alive and I am so thankful that we all got to appreciate the fine views before today's rain.

I hope you all like it and feel free to SHARE if you wish :D

There are sunrises that you witness and photograph that have you feel so blessed to be alive to experience them. I had such a morning on Wednesday when I arrived at the harbour at Rethymno pre-dawn to decide on a composition of the lighthouse framed by the archway of the Tourist Information Office (which I captured) but it was this one in particular had that me a little excited.

Why? Because once I had blocked the rising sun behind the Cretan date palm tree (Phoenix Theophrasti for those interested) and realised that the branches would frame both the lighthouse and the streetlight from above, I knew the shot would work.

So this is the lovely little harbour of Rethymno where cafes and restaurants line the water's edge while small boats bob up and down in the water. Arrive pre-dawn and you pretty much have the place to yourself bar the odd reveller who are making their way back to base after a night on the tiles.

I love cities and towns pre-dawn because I get to experience them at their quietest. It's a very special time to be out and about with your camera.

Little wonder why I cannot wait to return April 2020 to run a workshop there. If you are interested in joining me, give me a shout and I shall put you on the waiting list when more information becomes available which will be around Thursday/Friday.

So on this particular morning I discovered a wonderful place called Lake Hayes, which is around a ten minute drive north east of Queenstown. OMG, if the NZ government would allow me to live in New Zealand and if I had around £3 million in the bank, I'd live here in a heartbeat (no chance then, lol).

It's a stunning lake that has joggers, walkers and cyclists as well as an official rowing team that train on the lake. The views are sensational with the lake surrounded by snow capped mountains.

Taken during my two week visit to the south island of New Zealand in September in preparation for a ten day landscape photography workshop that I am running there May 2019.

Glenorchy was a fantastic little town that comprises a couple of pubs, a church, Post Office, a church, a museum and perhaps the world's smallest library.

According to www.newzealand.com/uk/article/6-free-top-spots-in-glenorchy/

The lady of the lake "The Earnslaw" use to be a reliant source for feight and livestock between Queenstown & Glenorchy prior to the road been opened between in the early 1960's. The gorgeous and iconic railway shed beside the wharf is well worth taking a peep inside for historical tidbits & photographs on its walls.

All I know is that it sure was a popular place to visit and getting a shot without people in it took a certain amount of patient (make that a LOT of patience, lol) and determination. I did not even have to ask people to stand to the side. You really need to see this place and of course doing so on a gorgeous spring day complete with pure blue skies made the visit all the more memorable.

I hope you all like it.

This wonderful volcanic crater lake was first brought to my attention by a lovely lady who worked at a guesthouse that I stayed at March 2017. She had seen a photograph taken by Icelandic local photographer Sigurdur William Brynjarsson that featured a blazing display of the aurora borealis reflected in the water of the crater. It certainly was quite colourful.

Here's a link to Sigurdur's photo apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap170306.html

And Sigurdur's 500px Page

500px.com/siggiphoto

Sadly I did not have time to visit it last year but I did on Wednesday afternoon as I was driving my clients back to the airport town of Keflavik so we stopped off for an hour to shoot it.

According to Wikipedia, it is one of several crater lakes in the area, known as Iceland's Western Volcanic Zone. It was created as the land moved over a localised hotspot, but it is the one that has the most visually recognisable caldera still intact. The caldera, like the other volcanic rock in the area, is composed of a red (rather than black) volcanic rock. The caldera itself is approximately 55 m (180 ft) deep, 170 m (560 ft) wide, and 270 m (890 ft) across. Kerid’s caldera is one of the three most recognisable volcanic craters because at approximately 3,000 years old, it is only half the age of most of the surrounding volcanic features. The other two are Seyðishólar and Kerhóll.

While most of the crater is steep-walled with little vegetation, one wall is sloped more gently and blanketed with a deep moss, and can be descended fairly easily. The lake itself is fairly shallow (7–14 metres, depending on rainfall and other factors), but due to minerals from the soil, is an opaque and strikingly vivid aquamarine.

There is a charge to walk around it during the daytime (approx £3.00) but it's free once the car park closes and you can park outside of the gates and off the road so there's no problem in parking.

Well, what a day I've had today. Me and my good friend Tony Higginson decided to leave Preston at 6am and head for Hodge Close and Holme Fell for sunrise only the road conditions were bloody awful and we failed to get through Windermere due to the main road being impassable (it had not been snow ploughed so there were so many cars being abandoned).

So we decided to take the A591 from Levens to Coniston instead and that road was no problem at all. The main issue was driving the two mile long road to Hodge Close and we ended up parking the car up by the road (we did not block it) and walk the mile and a half.

The shot I wanted was to capture the beautiful small tarn on Holme Fell all frozen over and if there was snow on top, all's the better. My wish was granted on arriving and I got to work in setting up a composition before firing off seven vertical images to be stitched together in Photoshop CC.

The light was flat with the occasional bout of sun but the sky was fantastic. It look heavy laden with more snow and it set off the scene beautifully. So here's my final edit of a great visit to a lovely part of the Lake District. Strangely enough the long walk back to the car felt like an eternity but knowing that a full cooked English breakfast was to follow soon after helped to keep our spirits up, lol.

Anyway, I shall edit a couple more images from today shortly and I shall share them once completed. I hope you all had a great day. Thanks to Tony for another cracking day out with the cameras :D

This photo is a panorama of five vertical images stitched together in Photoshop CC and it was taken last night at the end of a six-hour twilight workshop I ran at Salford Quays. This place is a hub of activity and has so many buildings to photograph including the Imperial War Museum, and the two bridges (one of which you can see in the distance on the left).

I love this place once the sun sets and the lights come on and in fact, I love shooting cities at night in general. I have not done a lot of it recently but I might venture out near midnight on an odd night and reacquaint myself with the art of nighttime cityscapes :D

I have been saving this image for tonight, Christmas Eve as a tribute to Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen and of course Ruldoph. I spotted this wonderful view of the reindeer slowly moving across the vast snowy landscape way back in February. It's been a long ten months for me, lol.

The scene reminded me of camels in the desert and having ridden them in the middle of the Australia Outback, I can assure you that the reindeer are safer having me some distance from them, ha, ha.

Have a wonderful Christmas everyone

This location is one of the most fascinating places I have visited in New Zealand, partly because it is so unusual and unexpected.

This panoramic image that I edited earlier today of these outstanding natural clay cliffs en-route to Mt Cook National Park. This place is spellbinding and HUGE.

Basically, these clay cliffs are tall pinnacles separated by narrow ravines and are made up of layers of gravel and silt, originally formed by the flow from ancient glaciers over a million years ago. OVER A MILLION YEARS AGO. WOW.

It is difficult to appreciate the sheer size of these towering pinnacles as there is nothing in shot to give you a sense of scale so here is a drone video I found on YouTube by Y2J Does Asia.Skip the first thirty seconds of him chatting to the French couple and watch in awe as he pilots the drone of some of the most stunning scenery I have come across in New Zealand. I LOVE THIS PLACE.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpHcuTcCC2g

To capture this shot (which incidentally is made up of eleven vertical images stitched together in Photoshop CC), I had to climb up to a narrow ridge which runs high up and down the centre of these pinnacles. I am looking outwards over the terrain as opposed to the shot I took last September where I stood at the opening looking in. This place is absolutely bloody stunning. Looks like New Zealand delivered once again and yes this location will feature on my April 2020 workshop.

Podere Belvedere in the Autumn Mist, Tuscany, Italy

This morning ranks as one of my top three finest sunrises since I first picked up a camera way back in February 2007. It was an absolute privilege to photograph this gorgeous and iconic farmhouse.

Arriving on location at around 6.20am (sunrise scheduled for 7.04am), I wandered over to a clearing in the olive trees that afforded a stunning view of the farmhouse below. There were copious amounts of mist swirling around in the valley below, revealing trees and buildings as it went before concealing them as quickly.

The whole scene was alive and changing every few seconds. It was bloody magical and the kind of conditions that I and every landscape photographer prays for. I felt so lucky to be witnessing this on my second of eight mornings in Tuscany. Fingers crossed for another six mornings like this but I can dream. I eventually took this photo at 6.45am, twenty minutes before sunrise and the sky was a stunning glow of yellows /oranges.

*****I have just two places left on my Northern Lights in Lofoten, Norway Workshop in November 2021*****

melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product/lofoten-norway-p...

Killer Whales & Sea Eagles, Lofoten, Norway

WOW. I am just looking back through my many images and short videos of my Lofoten workshop in November 2019. My six lovely clients and I had the absolute privilege to witness a pod of killer whales and a dozen sea eagles in a fjord in Lofoten, Norway just down the road from where our workshop house is.

I was driving down a side road to a new location that promised some amazing views of nearby mountains across the water when one of my clients noticed some activity of sea eagles above the water. This prompted us to pull the minibus over and set up the cameras only to find two pods of killer whales (Orcas) circling the water in two areas in order to eat the fish in a process called 'carousel feeding'.

“The Orcas have to stop the fish from diving, so they force them to the surface and keep them there in a ball by circling around them.”

www.nationalgeographic.com/magazine/article/orcas-feeding...

It was utterly fascinating to spend nearly an hour watching them work together in order to feed while the Sea Eagles constantly swooped down to feed on the dead fish themselves. What an incredible experience it was and one that I shall never forget.

Here's a capture of some gorgeous light and colour in the sky while nature went about its business.

Me and my workshop client Alan only had one morning in Wanaka to capture the tree and the sunrise in general and this morning it was it so imagine our delight when the sky looked as though it caught fire.

We arrived at That Tree at 6.15am, ninety minutes before sunrise only to find two photographers already on location. So we set up and waited for the sunrise to happen while other people arrived to do the same. The sunrise appeared to happen and the colour seemed to fade away, so much so, that I actually packed up my camera equipment.

Ten minutes later, the sky started to turn red, then orange then a whole range of colours and then BANG, the sky seemed to catch fire. What a pleasure to be out on such a morning.

P.S. the colours are genuine and have not been enhanced in Photoshop CC.

The Amazing Triaigh Ghearadha (Garry Beach) and one of the Caisteal a' Mhorair Sea Stacks, Isle of Lewis, Scotland. Coordinates 58.366654, -6.215870

There is something wonderful, mesmorising and exciting about the ocean that I am drawn to. For me, it's a living, breathing entity and in the same way as lone trees, I feel compelled to visit them, photograph them, experience them and remember them. Photographs in part, for me, are permanent reminders to accompany the memories that I have.

This rock is one of a few that stand proud on Garry Beach on the east coats of the Isle of Lewis and I fell in love with this location for there were so many compositions to absorb and capture on camera that I barely knew where to start. Time and plenty of it is what was required to fully discover this amazing corner of the island.

It was sure a stunning sight. Have a great day everyone :and feel free to share if you wish D

Whilst stood on the beach this morning with my friend Ken, I looked over and saw this wonderful series of buildings that somehow had me think it looked very Italian.

I waited for the right cloud structure to form as well as deciding to shoot the scene using long exposure to soften the water and the clouds and I love how it has come out.

I captured this while on a photo day out with Tony Higginson Landscape Photography on Saturday. Thirlmere is a part of the Lake District that I have yet to fully discover and I really enjoyed spending a few hours just wandering around down by the wonderful shoreline in the mist.

These trees stood out to me with their beautiful colours which radiated in the swirling mist that enveloped them.

Just when I thought I had seen it all, Lewis goes and shows me something extraordinary in the form of Garry Beach at Tolsta. On first arriving this one mile sandy beach looks idyllic, calming and unspoiled then you spot the amazing sea stacks of Caisteal a' Mhorair and I feel like a child on Christmas morning, all excited and restless.

How on earth am I supposed to do the outstanding scenery justice. It really was mindblowing. In the end I decided to shoot six vertical portrait format frames with the intention of stitching them together to create one hell of a panorama.

Just as I set up,. a huge hailstone storm hit leaving the entire beach completely white which I have to confess looked amazing. The tide was coming in reasonably quickly so a quick set up and capture to ensure that the beach retained its whiteness.

I hope you all enjoy it

Sunrise at Moraine Lake in Alberta. Probably the most famously photographed lake in the world, but for good reason! This was taken with a Canon Canada 5D Mark III and a Canon 16-35 f/4 L IS lens on my Really Right Stuff TVC-24L tripod. The other super important thing is that I was using a set of Formatt Hitech Filters. A circular polarizer to cut down the glare on the water, and a 3-stop graduated filter to hold back the exposure in the top half of the image. Gear appropriately carried in my MindShift Gear First Light pack! ift.tt/2a5ZYBP - uploaded from ift.tt/Zaxgq2

I took this shot last Thursday mid afternoon just as it was going dark. I loved the colours of the pillars and thought that they would make quite a nice abstract image.

Bristol is such a complex city to shoot. It rises and falls from the river Avon up to the Clifton Suspension Bridge three hundred feet high up. There are underpasses, bridges, roads going off in all directions, the river Avon which runs right through it and more buildings than you could shake a stick at.

If you want to photograph a city that's challenging and yet rewarding when you get it right, give Bristol a whirl.

Taken on my Dorset workshop this week at a location that I love to shoot, Portland Bill. The light was magical and the colours subtle yet powerful and when mixed with a long exposure shutter speed, it really simplified the scene for me.

My third and final image that I took on Friday after spending the day hiking fourteen miles up Catbells (1,479ft), High Spy (2,142ft) and Dale Head (2,470ft) alongside Derwentwater in the Lake District and I have to say that my body was broken but my mind was strong and the sense of satisfaction and achievement immense.

The Lake District has enjoyed several weeks of pure blistering sunshine and temperatures in the mid to high 20's yet today (on the day that I go with a friend of mine), the rain came down, the temps plummeted to around 14 degrees and the wind picked up and the whole scene of Causey Pike from Catbells looked incredibly threatening but I would always take these kind of conditions over pure blue skies and no clouds any day of the week.

I took up my Canon 5D MK4 DSLR complete with the Benro Angel carbon fibre travel tripod (FTA28CV1) and it was bloody fantastic. Small and compact, lightweight, strong and stable even in the wind. I took this image using it. Amazing piece of kit. Super impressed.

Well it's time for a shower now and something to eat followed by relaxing in front of the TV and falling asleep no doubt. The fancy piece of watch tech on Trish's wrist recorded that we had walked 29,000 steps and 22.48km. Phew. Night all :D

This was my first time shooting with the Mindshift Panorama and the Filter Hive. It made working with the tripod and filters so much easier because there was nowhere good to set my bag down here. I was easily able to add my 4x4 panel CPL and swap between my 2 and 3 stop soft GNDs.

Another wonderful day spent in the Lake District today on a 1-2-1 private tuition day with a lovely American chap called David..

The weather was perfect with lovely blue skies, white fluffy clouds and some amazing directional lighting to boot.I decided to show David around the fantastic remains of the Roman fort on Hardknott Pass.

This location is fascinating. For those not familiar with the Roman Fort on Hardknott Pass, here's a brief history lesson.

The Roman Fort, one of the loneliest outposts of the Roman Empire, built between AD120 and AD138 during the reign of Emperor Hadrian, is on a spectacular site overlooking the pass which forms part of the Roman road from Ravenglass to Ambleside. The walls surrounded granaries, barracks, and a commandant’s house. The baths, with a sequence of three rooms can be seen outside the main walls. An area of flattened ground is believed to be a parade area.

It housed a cohort of 500 men, the fourth Cohort of Dalmatians, infantry soldiers from Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Montenegro. Living at 815ft above sea level, they guarded the Roman road between Ambleside and Ravenglass from invasion by the Scots and Brigantes. The fort is 375 feet square, and covers an area of around 2 and three quarter acres. The fort was disbanded in 197AD.

This is not your average kind of image taken in New Zealand by landscape photographers but then again, I'm not your average kind of landscape photographer, ha, ha.

So let me confirm that I do love to shoot a little bit of industrial architecture in the landscape and power stations are a prime candidate especially when situated in the most colourful lake I think that I have ever seen, Lake Pukaki.

The green colour of the water is mind-blowing and utterly spellbinding. It really is THAT green.

So onto the power station. One of the elements of the image that I really like is the wonderful 75 metre bridge that joins the station to the mainland and the fact that the water level is as high as it is.

I saw from the roadside two huge red pipes that lead from the power station and head up and over the hill to the reservoir and I thought that the inclusion of one of them within the frame would really add to the composition of the final capture. Your thoughts?

This rather magical sunrise was captured back in September during my nine days spent touring around the beautiful coastline of Dorset for the first time I may add.

I had been out photographing Durdle Door until 3.30am so when I eventually awoke at 6am having crashed out in the back of the car, I found that the first light of day was already starting to develop. I hastily grabbed me camera equipment, tripod and a cold drink before rubbing my blurry eyes and jogging all the way to Old Harry Rocks some 1.5 miles.

I was absolutely shattered on arrival but the colours were at their peak which gave me just about enough time to catch my breath,m wipe the sweat from my brow and set up the camera.

This is what I manage to capture. Worth all the effort? You decide. I'm happy enough with the results though.

Feel free to SHARE if you wish.

Tuscany Photography Workshop

21st - 26th Sept 2020

melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product-category/tuscany...

.

.

After one of my most enjoyable day's landscape photography that I can remember for some time, I decided to finish yesterday off by paying the gorgeous, elegant Chapel of the Madonna di Vitaleta a visit after dark en-route back to the hotel.

This gorgeous little church stands high up on a hill near Pienza flanked by two rows of Cypress trees with a Maritime Pine standing guard close by. It is perhaps one of the most enchanting and beautiful scenes I have ever seen, simple yet so wonderfully evocative.

Once parked in the free car park, a short eight minute walk leads you to the church where naturally I was alone in the dark. The sound of the crickets was almost deafening yet rhythmic and melodic in their sound. I enjoyed listening to them.

It took some time to set up my equipment because I kept looking around at the stars and the lights in the distance. I felt like I was stood on top of the world looking down. It was a most enjoyable experience. An hour later, the task was done but I say task as though it was simply another location ticked off my Tuscany list but in truth, it felt much more than that. I felt privileged to be standing in front of this 429 year old stone marvel (built 1590). Italy certainly does have a wonderful way of bringing out a range of emotions in me. It must be the coffee, lol.

Anyhow, once I had finished photographing the church properly, I decided to capture me in the shot to complete my time there and this is the edited image. I shall share the proper image once I return home in a couple of weeks as I want to edit it on my desktop and not the laptop I am currently travelling with.

I hope you like the image. Here's a link to some more information about the church for those interested in reading up on it. Here's a bit of trivia for you. The church once housed the Madonna sculpture by artist, Andrea della Robbia.

I feel as excited as a child on Christmas morning at the moment as every week I head to another amazingly beautiful part of the world to run another landscape photography workshop and tomorrow I shall be heading up to Glencoe for five days.

Why am I excited? This photo that I took as the sun was rising over the hugely evocative and atmospheric Rannoch Moor lats November should say it for me.

Trying to find new and interesting opportunities to photograph a well visited part of the UK is difficult but when you do manage to capture something that little bit different, I do tend take a little bit more satisfaction from doing so.

I was photographing this wonderful small waterfall on Tuesday morning while my Fog Bow photograph was being shared around the various social media platforms. The phone never stopped ringing, and the sound of what seemed like a million Facebook and Twitter notifications an hour pinged away.

It seemed a weird situation to be in really, knowing that people were enjoying what I had photographed two days before while I was all alone on the moorland of Rannoch trying to photograph this waterfall but I enjoyed the challenge. I love Cauldron Falls and the backdrop is dramatic and typically Scottish in its shape and structure.

Here is an image made up from focus stacking six images to ensure that there was enough focus throughout the whole image. It really was as cold as it looks too.

On reaching near the summit of High Spy yesterday during my mammoth 14 mile hike over the fells of Catbells, High Spy and Dale Head, I came across this walking excavator parked up resting idle. I wondered how on earth it managed to get there but I concluded perhaps it was dropped there by helicopter (Chinook maybe. Any thoughts?)

I thought it was a great opportunity to fire off a couple of images and stitch them together in Photoshop CC. That's Catbells in the distance on the right (1,479ft).

FOUR DAY LAKE DISTRICT AUTUMN WORKSHOP

Tues 31st October - Fri 3rd November 2017 £795

www.melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product/lake-distric...

I spent Tuesday this week driving around like the Mad Hatter trying to photograph everything that had colour in view. Hodge Close was my early afternoon location as the sun would be behind me illuminating the gorgeous gold colours of the silver Birch trees.

But even I was not prepared for the outstanding colours that we're seeing this year so I think from memory these are the most vibrant colours I've ever seen in the Lake District. Apparently, the floods last December have something to do with the abundance of colour this autumn. I guess every cloud has a silver lining.

So here's a shot that I took from the east side of the quarry which affords you an elevated position from which to look over the stunning landscape. I hope you love looking at the scene as much as I did standing there with the camera.

It was an absolute joy to return to Kolymvari in Crete last week after visiting it for the first time back in 2010. This quiet, laid back, sleepy village has a lovely little harbour in which you can see fishermen head out pre-dawn in their small boats while I stand by the water's edge with my camera on a tripod waiting for sunrise.

But on this particular day, I arrived at Kolymvari on the first day of landing in Crete. The sun was shining, the heat was making me feel good and the colour of the water was gorgeous. I took my time setting up as I decided to savour the moment. I took a handful of shots (I'm never one to rattle off millions of photos, I'm a considered shooter these days) before tweaking the composition and finally plumping for a square format.

My choice of camera these days is Canon's latest EOS R mirrorless and I love it. Naturally all Canon's allow you to shoot in various aspect ratios including the usual 3:2, but also 4:3, 16:9 and my favourite, 1:1 (square). If I change my mind on the composition once home and the image has been opened in Adobe RAW, I can simply extend the aspect ratio back to 3:2 again. It's a case of having your cake and eating it I guess.

Anyhow, I am just putting together the final touches for my April 2020 Crete workshop and it will be live in a few days time, along with all of my 2020 workshops.

If you would like to be notified of my future workshops ahead of my social media followers, come and SIGN UP to my NEWSLETTER. It takes thirty seconds and is of course completely free of charge.
