Last week i did an exhibition with Paul Paetzel as part of the lovely Nextcomic festival in Linz. we made some new work for it.

www.nextcomic.org/ai1ec_event/brecht-vandenbroucke-paul-p...

Saturday (020319) started wet, grey and very windy, the predicted storm was hitting land earlier than expected. Regardless of this, I headed out without much hope, but as it was my first time out with my camera since November and my first visit to Snowdonia of 2019, I just had to give it a try. I had wandered this area taking some shots, all looking flat and boring without any light. I was making my away across a boulder field which was somewhat of risk, as the rocks were lethal, wet and covered in ankle twisting green growth, when all of a sudden to my right I saw the clouds parting and sunlight was hitting the rocks in front of me. I had climbed up to this spot in the hope of getting this composition, however not expecting the light to play ball. No time for a tripod, this shot had to be grabbed quickly and handheld, luckily I was wearing my new Mindshift rucksack which has a rotation system, whereby you can pull the camera pouch that is part of the waist belt from inside the bottom of the rucksack and within seconds you have access to your camera. I got the shot before the light disappeared, which it did within seconds. Chuffed, I headed back down...

FOUR DAY LAKE DISTRICT AUTUMN WORKSHOP

WOW, what a view. The Langdale Pikes never disappoint me especially on a day like me and my clients experienced on my four day Lake District workshop on Thursday (20th Oct 2016).

I love nothing more than dappled light gently drifting along a craggy fellside while shadows help to create wonderful depth and beauty. The Langdale Pikes from Blea Tarn is an iconic view for a reason. This is why.

I hope you all love it as much as I do.

Anyone who knows me will know my love of wooden jetties and when I found this one on Google Maps, I simply had to pay it a visit. The weather was overcast on this particular morning but that was fine, I did not mind at all. I love the mesh netting. It adds some interest. I had to shoot it long exposure and I particularly like the fact that I can see the lake bed around the pier too. So much detail being brought out by the Nisi polariser filter.

This photo was taken pre-dawn on my ascent to the summit to shoot the iconic Old Man of Storr in Skye this week. It is an hour's walk up some difficult terrain (hugely muddy in places and very slippery as a result). Me and a couple of clients who i was leading up for the sunrise shoot stopped underneath the huge 160ft rock that is the Old Man and I noticed the bank of photographers that had already made the journey up.

I loved how their head torches shone like beacons when set against a dark sky of the blue hour. I felt compelled to photograph them if only to capture something a little different.

And the heavily cropped version showing the photographers in more detail. This latest Canon 5D MK4 is hugely impressive, not just for its dynamic range in allowing me to lighten up the shadows without introducing colour noise but also for the clarity and ability to heavily crop an image and still retain a high degree of quality and detail.

As mentioned in the description of the photo with the Arca-Swiss packed, the Horseman fits in easily, with room to spare.

That's my Sony A7II with 55/1.8 and battery grip sitting in the extra space. In addition to the 150/5.6 Fujinon and 210/5.6 Fujinon, the 45FA also has a 135mm Sironar-N mounted and folded away (a great feature).

WOW, despite having visited New Zealand twice before (2003 & 2008) and knowing just how beautiful this country is, I have been utterly blown away by what I have seen and experienced since arriving on Thursday.

Yesterday was one such experience. The weather had been glorious until yesterday morning when on opening the curtains of my sixth floor hotel room at The Hermitage, I saw nothing but high winds and driving rain. Mmmmm. Cooked breakfast consumed, Ed and I (client and now friend) decided to walk the six mile return hike to the iceberg filled Hooker Glacier Lake in the valley (we must have been mad).

Hiking boots and waterproof trousers on, off we walked and with the fierce head wind and driving rain that lashed so hard against your face, it felt like hailstones, the walk proved tough but after an hour and fifteen minutes, we arrived to a misty filled backdrop and a gorgeous green coloured lake,

We took shelter behind a huge rock because at times, it was a struggle just standing upright. Lunch quick eaten and I decided to head down to the shoreline and try to capture this stunning single iceberg that sat in the perfect position waiting for me. It was so beautiful. The ice was clean and blue, with an interesting shape and just far enough out into the lake to capture on its own with a couple of nearby rocks for company.

So I set up the Benro TMA48CXL carbon fibre tripod and wondered how on earth it would perform in seriously demanding conditions. I need not have worried for it performed brilliantly well. Solid, dependable and at over six foot six inches, it allow me to spread the legs out further than normal to obtain a decent steady base. The Canon 5D MK4 camera was bolted on along with a Nisi six Stop ND filter to slow down the water to four seconds (so as to smooth out the water a little while still retaining texture which was so important to me) and a click on the shutter button later and voilà, an image captured.

I took a few more frames and on heading back to the hotel and looking at the images on my small 14" Asus ZenBook laptop, I was amazed that the images turned out quite sharp. Who would have thought? lol.

Anyhow, here is the photo in all its glory. I am so delighted with it I cannot tell you. Sure, some lovely light on the surrounding mountains and some vibrant colour in the sky would have been nice but on reflection, I prefer this image. It speaks to me on another level and captures the real atmosphere of this wondrous place.

New Zealand is amazing me with each passing day and I hope you feel the same when looking at my photos. Thanks for joining me on this inspirational two week journey of mine in New Zealand :D

Perfect day out in Banff with the family, stopped at lake minnewanka after a great skiing of skiing at Louise. Should've brought our skates as well.

Low light Lumix camera setup for working behind the scenes at the opera, where the normal working ISO range is 3200 to 5000, so extremely dark. Full frame Lumix S1 with the Lumix S Pro 50mm f1.4. A pair of m43 Lumix G9 cameras with the Leica DG 10-25mm f1.7, 12mm f1.4, 42.5mm f1.2 and a Voigtlander 17.5mm f0.95 Nokton. All carried in a MindShift Gear Photocross 15. When actually shooting backstage, I will then use the Think Tank Photo Hubba Hubba Hiney waist pack. London, UK. June 29, 2019. Photo: ©Edmond Terakopian

GAS: I decided it was time to get a proper photography backpack. Initial impressions are really positive.

Bob's Cove does not sound terribly tropical does it but on arriving for my first visit, I was bowled over by this gorgeous pier and its old pier supports. The colour of that water was genuine too. One could be forgiven for thinking that this scene was lifted straight out of Barbados but it wasn't, the temperature reminded me of that, lol.

Te Anau is a place that I have never spent time in. I guess most people shoot through en-route to Milford Sound as I have done previously but on this trip, I had an overnight to kill and so a stay in town in one of the many kitchenette motels and a meal in the gorgeous Redcliff Cafe (which is actually a beautiful restaurant in what looks like a house) was on the cards.

But first a visit to the most popular attraction for landscape photographers, the Markura Yacht Club Jetty. It makes a perfect subject to shoot and there are numerous compositions to play around with. Te Anau, a lovely place to stay. I shall be back there in May.

I don't mind admitting that Eglinton Valley en-route to Milford Sound is a strange place. A huge valley surrounded by mountains with an eerie vast expanse of space in front of you. How do you photograph such a place and do it justice? Let me know when you've found the answer but for now, here's my take on it.

Here's my Mindshift Gear BackLight loaded with gear for a trip to Las Vegas. Plenty of room for more, obviously, but this is enough.

Sony A7II with Sony/Zeiss 55mm f/1.8 mounted

Sony/Zeiss 35mm f/2.8

Sony/Zeiss 16-35 f/4, rented from LensRentals.com

Two Think Tank Cable Management 10 Bags (one with computer stuff, and the other with camera stuff)

Sony HVL-F20M Flash

In the front will be my 12-Inch MacBook and iPad Air.

Total weight about 14.5 lbs. Carries very well, around the house, anyway :-)

See notes for details. This kit weighs just over 19lbs. Could save probably 2.5lbs by carrying only the incident meter and my smaller Gitzo 1580 tripod. Could save even more by not carrying that giant 90mm that I almost never shoot!

Something a little different for me. A close up image of the meadow in the beautiful village of Muker during last week's one day workshop I ran in the Dales.

Out early this year (February) to photograph my new camera backpack, the Mindshift Backlight 45 Elite, (I should have waited for better light). So far very impressed with the design and quality of the bag and excited to put it to proper use. Unfortunately owing to the lockdown the backpack hasn't been outside since then and a planned tour, to take place about now, of the high plateau and mountainous regions of Yunnan and Sichuan had to be postponed. Hopefully will happen in the not too distant future.

What a stunning place The Chasm is en-route to Milford Sound. The most beautiful waterfalls viewed from above from a walkway that has been built specially in the forest. What a treat it was to spend an hour or so here.

they'd most likely look something like this. Visited the Exploratorium in SF today. Perhaps my new favorite place in the city, or maybe the world. It is for kids, but I am thinking about taking a solo trip there just to explore. Absolutely loved it. A bit pricy but lucky for us, we got in free. BTW, these headphones are built so you hear things on your right side with your left ear and vice-versa.

Unknown to many, I've actually have a habit of browsing through what others bring out for their photography trips, so one of those days, I thought to myself, "hey, why not do one yourself?"

A little background, I'm residing in Singapore, thus, there is no need for maps or raincoats or compass since everything is so connected and urbanised.

Lets start off:

1. Mindshift Filter Hive - I used this to store all my filters, batteries and nitty witty items like remotes and batteries.

2. Sirui R-1204 & Sirui K10X with some rotating ballhead thing at the top - this has been my tripod setup for years. Lightweight & dependable, highly recommended setup for beginners.

3. Mindshift Backlight - I have been a fan of MIndshift bags since using their Panorama Rotation 180. The Backlight allows for quick access to my gears & has ample space for my other items.

4. Protrek PRW-3000 - my go-to digital watch which has ABC functions.

5. Towel - I sweat very easy. No further explanation needed.

6. Batteries - I'm using a Sony A7R, 'nuff said.

7. Water bottle - important to stay hydrated.

8. Filters - thought I rarely use them, still a necessity, just in case i ever need them.

9. Gopro Hero 4 Silver - a lightweight setup for selfies and quick behind-the-scenes.

10. Leatherman Wave - a multi tool with a pocketful of important tools such as clamps (when your hand cant unscrew the ballhead's screw) or scissors and cutters and such.

11. Fenix torchlight - shooting sunset at secluded places often mean you will leave the location way after nightfalls. The torchlight helps to ensure you have packed up everything, leave no litter behind and to find a proper path out of your location to somewhere brighter.

12. Remotes - I pack both wired and wireless remotes. I much prefer the wireless remote though.

13. Panning rail - this serves both as a panning rail, or as tool for me to protrude my camera out a little, if needed, to get my shot.

14. Manfrotto superclamp - The superclamp is always packed into my bag with the tripod as both complements each other, especially when I am shooting from a HDB block which has railings for me to clamp on.

15. Memory cards - Just in case.

16. Thinktank memory card holder - to get them all organised.

17. Sony 55mm F1.8 - a good street and portrait lens.

18. Sony 16-35 F4 - the lens that is on my camera 80% of the time. The 16mm range is perfect for landscapes and the 35mm range allows me to shoot some streets with it too.

19. LEE filter holder - for the 100mm filters.

20. Cleaning tools - Lens pens and blower.

21. Allan key - in case I need to remove/add on a tripod plate to my tripod collar or camera.

22. Sony A7R - I purchased this A7R from a friend and have loved this ever since. The release of the A7R2 has no doubt shaken my heart, but my wallet has been my "saving grace".

23. Sony 70-200 F4 - when I need that extra reach

So, thats what I bring out, whats in your bag?

They all have their uses and are all good at what they are supposed to do.

Clockwise: Mindshift Backlight 26L in Forest Green, used successfully for many short field trips and workshops, this struggles with placing Nikkor 24-70 /2.8 or 105/1.4 vertically without feeling it your back. Has some, but limited space for extra layers, lunch etc, but tripods attach well.

Mindshift Backlight Elite 45L: For longer expeditions, planned but never happened this year. Though the biggest bag here, it carries very well and has loads of storage and features that make it really the most capable. Holds tripods and other attached items very well, has great waterproofing.

Lowepro Whistler AW450: These days is mostly used for Long Lens storage, but in the field this bag has plenty of protection and holds tripods very well.

ThinkTank StreetWalker Pro: Nimble and fast in a crowd, or for cycling. Currently used for storing Leica Gear, until situation changes, has enough depth for large pro bodies and lenses stored vertically.

ThinkTank Airport Commuter: Great for air travel, but doesn’t quite work in the field as no storage for rain gear, lunch etc. and does not hold large tripods very well; currently storing Nikon 35mm film gear.

A couple of days ago, MindShift Gear launched a new backpack called the BackLight 26. I've had one for a few weeks and I'm using it on my current trip in the Yukon wilderness. Full review when I get home... (Pic: Megan Hudson) ift.tt/1Pp5PiB - uploaded from ift.tt/Zaxgq2
