Come and join me on my Harris and Lewis Photography Workshop 2nd-8th March 2019 £1,395

I'm just looking back through literally thousands of images that I have taken over the winter from the many different locations that I have visited including Skye, Glencoe, Lewis & Harris, Iceland, Lake District and Yorkshire and I see so many images that I have yet to look at properly let alone edit.
But here's one that I took on the gorgeous Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides in Scotland back in mid-January of this year. To be honest, I cannot remember exactly where I took it but it was somewhere near the Callanish Stones area, perhaps a little further up the coast. I did so much travelling that week that it was difficult keeping track.
The rock formations at this location peaked my interest, not just because of their shape and textures but also that they had plant life growing on them which helps to give the image 'life'. The stunning aqua colour of the water in the distance (yes it really is that colour) merely adds to the colour palette of the image.

TWO DAY NORTHUMBERLAND WORKSHOP
2nd - 3rd December 2017 £295
www.melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product/northumberla...
Well, today was to be my last day in Northumberland this week as I head home tomorrow morning. Tony and I have had two great workshops this week and eight cracking people joining us. The weather has been ahem 'challenging' at times but nonetheless, t has presented us with some fantastic opportunities to photograph the stunning scenery.
Here is the iconic Bamburgh Castle during sunset today. The sky was epic, the colours subtly beautiful and the muted reflections beautiful. I hope you all like it.

This photo was taken during my eight days solo shooting in Iceland prior to my workshop starting in March. I had arrived at the car park at Kirkjufjara to find seriously strong winds blowing over the peninsula that I was stood on when I took this shot.
I had to stand with the wind to my back whilst trying to shelter the camera and tripod as best I could in order to allow me to shoot this long exposure image. I loved the isolation of the sea stacks in the distance with the rock arch to the right just about showing itself to me. I find the lava rock in the foreground to be very interesting to photograph for it has a tremendous amount of texture and colour.
If you turn around and shoot in the other direction towards Reynisfjara beach, you'll be treated to more sea stacks in the foreground and the distance too. This whole area is wonderful to photograph although the beaches all around are deadly so if shooting from the beach near the water, be incredibly careful as sneaker waves come in hard and fast and they will take you out to your death. Two people have died on these beaches since early 2016 with many more having had very close encounters. I saw people getting too close to the water on my several visits. I won't be doing that again myself.
But if treated with care and respect, the area is a magnet for photographers and should be visited and enjoyed. The black volcanic sandy beaches look amazing here too. Iceland delivers some stunning scenery to us shooters to capture on camera.

THREE DAY DORSET WORKSHOP
25th-27th September 2017 £595
www.melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product/dorset-works...
Surely one of the finest sunrises I have ever witnessed while in Dorset last month. Corfe Castle became my favourite location to photograph and on this particular morning I met fellow photographer Mark Pelleymounter who lives in the area.
We arrived on location very early and were the first on the scene so we set up in what we believed to be the best viewpoint (and I still think that). Jeremy Walker happened to walk by with a client in tow and a quick chat and a catch up followed before the serious business of shooting the castle took place.
The colours started to build, more people arrived and took their position higher up the hill but that would push the castle down in front of the hill behind it, therefore losing the outline of the castle. I was so happy to see the colours gaining strength and I was like the cat that got the cream when I captured this in-camera HDR image on my Canon 5Ds. My DSLR may be a 50mp monster and there are times when I question whether I need such high resolution but on morning's like these, absolutely I do. See the heavily cropped section of the castle below in the comment boxes to see the amazing quality of the Canon 5Ds.
I hope you all like it.

Tuscany Photography Workshop
21st - 26th Sept 2020

A brand new edit of an image not seen before of some stunning conditions that I so enjoyed last September in Tuscany.
This is the iconic Podere Belvedere agriturismo (farmhouse) and this nestles in the world famous San Quirico d'Orcia region of Tuscany. It is here that you will more often than not witness the mist rolling through the valley enveloping all that lay below it.
This farmhouse sits on top of a small rise and can often be seen peering through the mist, almost hauntingly. On this particular morning, I was so fortunate to capture the rising sun over the distant rolling hills as the mist swirled and rolled by. It truly was one of the most amazing scenes that I witnessed last year and Tuscany just blew my mind. It was so incredibly beautiful.

During a visit to Crosby beach in Merseyside in June this year, I wanted to capture a colourful image of one of Antony Gormley's Another Place men. The status are based on Antony's body apparently.
The conditions were perfect for what I had in mind and despite travelling an hour or so each way, I only took this scene and this is it. I used my Nisi filters to slow the water down to 25 seconds and I have admittedly cleaned up the beach a little from the high tide debris that was left lying around.
During the incredible weather that we experienced this summer, I wanted to create an almost tropical paradise kind of image. I'm happy with it. Question is. Does it work?
Enjoy your day whatever you happen to be doing.

Captured today during a 1-2-1 tuition day with a client of mine. I took Melissa to one of my favourite places in the Lake District, Hodge Close Quarry. It is a fantastic slate ex-quarry that was mined until the 1960's.
There are so many gorgeous silver birch trees that line the whole area and the beautiful white trunks really compliment the grey colour of the surrounding slate. This tree is always the first one to be photograph as it stands at the edge of a steep drop down to a lower section of land. Despite it leaning over, the roots lie deep and it survives the harshest of the winter weather year on year.
I love its doggedness and determination to cling onto life. Surely a wonderful metaphor for modern day living I would say. I hope you all like it. I have applied an analogue filter to create a certain aged look. I like the result. If you do too, please feel free to share the photo on your page :D

This wonderful ruins of Ardvreck Castle stand dormant on the shoreline of the six mile long Loch Assynt.Thought to have been built around 1590, this castle was owned by the Clan MacLeod who at that time owned Assynt it seems.
This three storey castle was once much larger than the present ruins and it housed a wall garden and a a formal courtyard. These days all that sadly remains is the tower and part of the defensive wall and when the waters of the loch reached very high levels, the peninsula that the castle stands on can be cut off from the mainland (Wikipedia).
Either way this is a wonderful subject to photograph at sunrise. There is also the shell of the nearby Calda House, a 1726 mansion built by the second Kenneth MacKenzie of Assynt for his wife who thought that castle opposite was too auster and uncomfortable.
Anyhow, have a great Thursday everyone, I am about to take my lovely group of clients off out to capture the sunrise colours behind Suilven at Loch Druim Suadalian.

I visited this wonderful stretch of coastline during my recent 26 day tour of the UK and for the first time too. The water was wild and I noticed how the waves rose and fell over both the waste pipe and its water marker. It reminded me of the famous French image by Jean Guichard called La Jument of the lighthouse keeper who was stood at his lighthouse front door whilst being photographed from above as a HUGE wave comes and pounds itself around the lighthouse. It scares me just looking at it. (the lighthouse keeper survived by stepping back and closing the door just before the water engulfed him and the lighthouse.
The movement of the water and how it revealed the pipe and water marker before completely engulfing it fascinated me (hence the reminder of the French lighthouse image). This beach is an amazing place to be during high tide and whilst it's true that the sea spray made shooting this scene difficult but anything worth having should not come easy in my opinion.

I have spent the last hour trying to figure out the names of the fells in the distance but failed. You you know, please let me know. I took this photo while driving from Muker to Preston via Kirkby Stephen on Monday evening (around 6.30pm) and the light was just sublime.
I felt compelled to pull up the minibus, jump out, walk a hundred yards to the highest point around me and set up my Canon 5D MK4 with the 24-70mm f4 lens. The light intensified as the clouds rolled right to left. The main fell in the middle of the frame was just being kept in check by the heavy set dark, brooding sky above it. Just a magical moment to witness and capture on camera.
I hope you all like it and as usual, please feel FREE TO SHARE if you wish. Many thanks in advance.

FOUR DAY LAKE DISTRICT AUTUMN WORKSHOP
Tues 31st October - Fri 3rd November 2017 £795
www.melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product/lake-distric...
I took this photo yesterday while in the Lake District with friends and it is included in my latest YouTube video that I uploaded yesterday. www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gkLBfbxYSY
And here's a feature that Ellie Harrison filmed earlier this year for the BBC TV show 'Secret Britain'. It shows just how difficult and remote this place is.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=OpSeD6-ZDws
Scale Force just happens to be my favourite waterfall in the Lake District. Partly because it is one of the quite incredible location it lies in (a narrow, 120ft deep, moss covered rock gorge an hour's walk up a large fell alongside Crummock Water) but also because it feels as though it has never been discovered by humans.
The green moss that lines the walls of the gorge is so vibrant that people will think that I have increased the saturation in Photoshop too much and the redness of the water actually does exist. It really is an absolutely special place of mine.
Behind the Scenes Info:
One of the challenges you will find shooting a 120ft waterfall like Scale Force is that it is actually three waterfalls and to climb up the incredibly slippery and near-vertical rock walls in order to reach the top one is dangerous and no mean feat.
The spray from the main waterfall as it drifts towards you and your camera means that it's a constant battle to keep the lens and filters dry. But if you preserve, this image is what you are likely to end up with.
I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did taking it.

Four DAY LAKE DISTRICT AUTUMN WORKSHOP
Tues 31st October - Fri 3rd November 2017 £795
www.melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product/lake-distric...
I do not shoot astro photography very often but when called on I can do so. This photograph was taken last week while running a workshop in the Lake District. One of my client's wanted to head out for an hour or so late at night in an attempt to capture a starry night shot above the stone circle. I used a head torch to very quickly light up the rocks for effect.
Her wish was my command and at 10pm we ventured out during a rather chilly night to find the stone circle empty (that's rare these days). The conditions were just amazing. You know just standing there looking up at the stars and allowing yourself to be mesmorised by them is an absolute pleasure and a privilege.
I would recommend it to anyone. I do hope you all like it. Have a great evening and feel free to SHARE as usual if you wish. Thank you :D

Firstly Happy Easter everyone. I hope you all have a great extended weekend.
So to start the weekend I thought that i would share a cute image of a mother and baby coo on Harris that i took a couple of weeks ago. I was quite excited to see my very first baby Highland coo and they're so cute too.
I loved seeing the bond between the two of them with Daddy Coo not that far behind. I shot from a reasonable distance so as to not cause them any additional stress although they did not seem unduly perturbed.

I visited this wonderful location called Fairy Glen (not Fairy Pools) on the stunning Isle of Skye yesterday tea time. I had only visited this place once before and many years before and vowed to return one day. Well, yesterday was that day.
I had five clients with me as I am leading a workshop and two of them had visited previously and had loved the place and it's not difficult to see why. There are a few tall grassy mounds and a couple of very, small ponds and the whole area genuinely has a mystical feel to it. I kept expecting to see fairies dancing around the bottom of the grassy mounds.
Here are the coordinates should you fancy visiting it :D

Many thanks to Duncan Steward for taking this photo of me stood at the base of the waterfall at Kirkjufellfoss in Iceland March 2017. It was a truly stunning location with the most gorgeous colours in the ice and the huge icicles hanging all around me.

Have you heard the saying, 'when life gives you lemons, make lemonade?' This was the case last Saturday when arriving at Derwenwater with my regular 1-2-1 client Paul Appleyard and the weather was misty and generally a touch dour.
Personally, I love conditions like these whilst I know some of my fellow photography buddies would rather have stayed in bed an extra couple of hours but we arrived on location at 5.30am and after a brief spell at the main landing stages, we ventured over to this wonderful jetty on the lower west side of the water.
It's a little bit of a trek to get to but well worth it as more often than not you are alone with your thoughts unlike the ever-popular Ashness Pier directly across the way from this location. I decided on this occasion once Paul got his shot to include the trees on the left so as to frame the image. I love the subtle colours and tones in this image and I hope you do too.

Taken during my autumn workshop last November in the beautiful west coast region of Assynt and Lochinver in Scotland.
Achmelvich, 'Ach' meaning a plain or meadow and 'mealvaich' - sandy dune (thanks Wikipedia) is a gorgeous little place with a stunning beach but it was these wonderful rocks looking out over a glorious sunset that interested me most and we all spent a happy hour or so capturing the last throws of light.

Now I know for a fact that some of you will be sitting there thinking 'Oh dear, Melvin's gone and lost the plot' and in the main you would be right, lol. However during a recent visit to the gorgeous beach at Hushinish on the Isle of Harris, I stood there at my tripod for a good five minutes just looking around and taking stock of the sheer beauty before me.
I remember thinking to myself just how lucky I was to be able to be a full time landscape photographer and how it afforded me such amazing opportunities to travel when I wanted (well between workshops, One-to-Ones and camera club talks of course) and to discover such gorgeous places such as this wonderful little beach.
As I looked down from my twenty foot high rock ledge, I noticed a little stump sticking up from the sand and I thought how small and delicate it looked among the much larger waves that were rolling up and down the beach. Then I noticed the patterns of the water and the wonderful way that the small waves formed as the water rolled back into a small incoming wave. I was transfixed and almost hypnotised just watching this action repeat itself over and over again.
Then I wondered just how long that lovely little stump had been there, surviving all that is throw at it and how resilient it must be to survive. The wonders of nature amaze me when I stop and look around. It is just one of the many reasons why I do what I do for a living. I am so fortunate indeed.
Have a great night folks :D

The Giant's Causeway, one of the world's most famous and iconic coastal locations and I can see why. This image was captured last night on my second day of seven that I am currently spending here in Ireland. The sun provided some lovely colour as well as lighting up the basalt rocks in the foreground.
The Giant's Causeway for those who do not know is an area consisting of around 40,000 interlocking columns of basalt rock that were created as a result of volcanic activity some 60 million years ago. Quite incredible isn't it? The National Trust own and manage the site.
I am here in Ireland recceing locations for two brand new workshops that will have me assisted by Irish born and bred Bernard Geraghty of Bernard Geraghty Landscape Tours.
Bernard will be my official tour guide for both workshops as his extensive knowledge of the locations is unrivalled and he will be our driver for the duration in his nine-seater VW Shuttle minibus. The plans at this stage will include a four-day North,North-West workshop this September followed by a five-day Wild Atlantic Way workshop on the west coast next March 2018.
If you would like to register your interest, please email me at info@melvinnicholson.co.uk and I will add your name to the list. You will be notified first once the workshops have been created within the next couple of weeks and as such, be offered the first chance of booking ahead of release of social media.
Huge thanks to Bernard Geraghty for his company these last two days and for showing me around his beautiful island. Bernard is a true Irish gent, loves his landscape photography and shares the same passion that I possess in delivering the best possible experience to our clients hence why I am delighted to have Bernard.working with me. www.facebook.com/BernardGeraghtyLandscapeTours

After a successful and enjoyable day's photography down at Elgol today, we were driving back to the cottage when I saw a sheep standing all alone on the top of a ridge.
I immediately parked up and reached for my 70-200mm lens. No sooner had I composed, when two additional sheep came and joined their mate. Now I had three of the buggers looking straight at me. I framed them equally against the freshly fallen snow covered fell behind them.
Within a minute or two they started banging heads and charging each other. It was certainly an interesting discussion that they were having before they retreated into their own little world out of our prying eyes.

This stunning snow scene is the summit of the 700,000yr old, 3,937 feet stratovolcano that lies on the Snæfellsnes peninsula on the western side of Iceland.
I had finished shooting the lovely little fishing harbour of Arnarstapi at sunrise when I saw this scene walking back to the car. I love the diagonal lines of the Mt. Stapafell on the left-hand side which to me contrasted with the gorgeous, soft meringue-like texture of the volcano behind it.
Iceland has the huge WOW moments that simply take your breath away but equally as important to me are these wonderful fleeting moments that help to create a memory that will for me last a lifetime. I captured this during my eight days I was shooting solo in March of this year.
Iceland really is the gift that keeps on giving. If you have never been, I strongly urge you too and ideally with me in October when I'll be running my next eight-day workshop out there.

My final morning on Skye last Saturday culminated in a spectacular fiery sunrise that took place directly over the Island of Raasay. After a week of rain, it was magical to witness the sky looking like fire. I was in my element.
Not long after I left Skye for the rather dryer and snow covered peaks of Glencoe in preparation for my four day workshop which starts this Thursday. Skye for all of its challenges, still offers the most amazing chances to capture on camera something extraordinary and just a fleeting moment of light on a stormy day is all that I need to be content. Moments. It's what we strive to photograph. Enjoy it. Embrace it. Live it.

Luskentyre Beach, Isle of Harris. Arguably one of the finest beaches in the world and it has been ranked as one of the Top 10 Best Beaches in the World in the past. www.visitscotland.com/blog/outer-hebrides/harris-beach-na...
The soft, golden sandy beach stretches on for some distance and as far as the eye can see. There's a real feeling of peace and tranquillity here and the idyllic look of this photograph does not do the place justice really. You NEED to go and visit it for yourself.
I spent a glorious week on the island back in mid-January this year and personally I feel in love with the place, especially the beaches on Harris. This photograph allowed me to finish an epic trip to somewhere new with a fantastic location as it kind of has me send of the place in style and this wonderful beach awaited me during my week spent on the island.
My verdict on the Isle of Lewis and Harris?
This is my first time of visiting and it has been an education and a real pleasure in discovering the many different sides and locations of this fine island. I have found it to be remote, desolate in parts, much larger than I first thought with some quite outstanding beaches, sea stacks and rocky outcrops. It really does feel different to the mainland, very earthy, no-nonsense way of living but seemingly free of complications and modern life and actually that isn't a bad thing.
I hope you have all enjoyed my photos and exploits from Lewis and Harris and I have shot a video of me shooting a coastal scene. You can see it here on YouTube. Feel free to SUBSCRIBE if you wish.

Phew, I'm not saying that it was rough down at Seahouses this morning but me and my clients were very grateful for the shelter that the gunpowder house gave on the wonderful rocky coastline of the small harbour village.
The skies were so impressive, huge swathes of dark clouds rolled in bringing with it copious amounts of water but for all of the challenges that these kind of conditions brings, it also brings with it some fantastic opportunities to capture on camera the raw power of the ocean.
Here's a fantastic rocky channel that fills up with water before hitting the blowhole behind me and the water shouts up in the air as too much water tries to crash through too small a hole.
We're off to Holy Island late this morning for a few hours. Should be fun. Have a great day folks

If there's one thing that I love shooting, it's coastal scenes. Water is something that excites me, especially the ocean because it's in a constant state of movement. I have so many options in deciding how to shoot the ocean, short exposure, long exposure or perhaps quick exposure (just as you see it with your own eyes).
If you throw into the mix a sea stack or two, I am one happy Melvin. I grew up in Blackpool, the home of three piers which also offer me many different options when shooting them (they're only twenty minutes from where I live in Preston) but the wonders of the natural.landscape simply cannot be beaten.
I have started to write a blog on my travels around Ireland from a couple of weeks ago and I hope to have that ready to read by Friday night but until then, please enjoy this scene and try to imagine sitting there on the edge of the cliff looking down on what mother nature has given us. For me, I could not have been happier.
Have a great Thursday everyone.

WOW, what a place the Butt of Lewis is. Yes, it's a pain in the 'butt' to reach as it is located right at the very top of the Outer Hebrides but boy is the drive worth it.
This shot was taken back in November last year while leading the first of two back-to-back workshops on the island. I was demonstrating how to take several images while focusing through the various lengths of the frame with the view of stacking them together in Photoshop CC in a technique called Focus Stacking.
This particular image only has three frames stacked together and it was necessary to focus stack as the foreground interest in the grass and rocks that you can see were only around 12" away from me. I was positioned as low down as I could go while maintaining a safe position from the edge.
It is a location that you could spend all day at should you ever decide to visit.
I am really looking forward to returning to Harris and Lewis to run two back to back workshops in November. If you're interested in joining me (assuming that everything is back to normal by then. Fingers crossed), click on the link below for details.

Four DAY LAKE DISTRICT AUTUMN WORKSHOP

I was up at Blea Tarn yesterday running a landscape photography workshop for four people when I decided to take them to this lovely little gem of a place. It's a stunning little series of waterfalls along the beck of Bleamoss that empties from Blea Tarn. It's only a ten-minute walk from the main tarn and yet I wonder how many people know of its existence?
I was demonstrating to Sue how to capture this scene safely and effectively. Crouching down on the rocks over the edge of the twenty-foot drop takes careful planning as you don't want to go over but the views are beautiful. I love this waterfall that comes in from the bottom right corner of the image only to hit the rock below and bounce back right.
The colours were wonderful too and in the overcast conditions, they seemed to be so vibrant. Definitely an area worth exploring in more detail. I hope you all like it :D

While I freely acknowledge that I am no wildlife photographer, I do on the odd occasion have a desire to capture on camera something that tinkles me and that definitely includes the hairy Highland Coos (cows).
I, like many people, find them hugely photogenic and they seem to possess an outgoing character not really seen in regular cows. Mind you, have eight of them surrounding your minibus once on location and have them bellow and growl (do these cows growl? lol), then they take on a different look, definitely more menacing than the cute facial hair would show.

Bloody hell, this image ranks in my top three most difficult locations I have photographed EVER!!!
Having visited this wonderful 130ft cave waterfall three days before last Saturday for the first time, my workshop clients and I vowed to revisit sunset on the following Tuesday instead as it was too busy to capture it without people. So imagine our surprise on arriving in the dark on the Tuesday evening to find a dozen people in there all trying to shoot selfies, lol.
Anyway, the sheer constant water that was being blown straight into our faces had them bid a hasty retreat. We then very quickly got to work by setting up the cameras complete with see through shower caps covering the camera for it was literally like standing under a shower. The constant stream of water drenched us through and beyond the capabilities of the waterproof clothing and yet the Canon 5D MK4 coped amazingly well.
So here is my final image showcasing this wonderful waterfall that drops down into a cave. It was shot at ISO800 so it's a little noisy but I do not care, I finally captured this waterfall a little differently to the vast majority of the shots seen on social media. I used an LED Lenser head torch to light up the water and surrounding rock walls.

Taken during a one-day workshop I was leading on Sunday 16th July 2017 in the really beautiful part of North Wales.
I saw these two wonderful trees by the side of the river and realised that by standing in the middle of the river itself, that both trees would lift themselves clear of their surroundings and stand free within the blue sky.
The water that I was stood in was around 8" in depth and the power was so evident as I could feel it constantly push against me but I am pleased that I carried on until I was really happy with that I came away with.
I hope you all like the image. Feel free to share it if you wish

Come and join me on my Harris and Lewis Photography Workshop 2nd-8th March 2019 £1,395
melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product/harris-lewis-sco...
WOW, what a beach. Have you ever heard of the world famous Luskentyre Beach? It's vast, desolate and utterly gorgeous. The colour palette between the blues of the sky, the gorgeous aqua green of the water, the lush yellows of the sandy beach and the vibrant multicoloured rock formations that stand guard on the perimeter of the beach are just simply amazing.
I had really wanted to visit the Isle of Lewis and Harris and experience what those who had been before me had experienced. Harris is the much smaller part of the single island whereas Lewis occupies most of the land, however Harris has the stunning sandy beaches and Lewis has the towering cliffs and fabulous sea stacks. Collectively, both parts of the island provide the landscape photographer with not only images to treasure for a lifetime but also the memories created in doing so. It really is a spectacular place.

Lofoten Photo Workshop: 8th - 14th Feb 2019 £1,495 melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product/lofoten-photogra...
I love sand patterns and there are few beaches that provide a better opportunity to capture them than Skagsanden in beautiful Lofoten in Norway.
This was taken during my photo tour back in October. I could sit and look at this image for hours. It was taken during the very last throws of light during dusk and I managed to get the tripod set up before the light fell altogether.

Four DAY LAKE DISTRICT AUTUMN WORKSHOP
Tues 31st October - Fri 3rd November 2017 £795

This has to be one of my favourite images I have shot this year. Why?
Well, despite having visited Cathedral Cavern numerous times before (a gorgeous huge man-made slate cavern/cave in the Lake District) I felt that I was able to find something 'new' to capture on camera and the feeling I get when I have managed to come away with something that 'works' and sits well with me, is fantastic.
Whilst I was leading a two-person workshop yesterday, I felt in the 'zone' whilst showing two regular clients around this impressive hidden gem. The light was strong enough to pull out the detail, shapes, contours, detail and colours out of the rocks and foliage but not too strong as to completely overwhelm the place. Light is such an important element of landscape photography, in fact for me, THE most important element that quite often, a location that you visit often can look so different depending on the time of day/month/year you visit as well as the different weather conditions you can experience.
That's just one of the reasons why I love being a full-time, professional landscape photographer.
I am running a couple of workshops in the Lake District later this year.

I love black and white images and in particular black and white images in a square format (inspired by Steve Gosling's work www.stevegoslingphotography.co.uk/) so here's one from my two day workshop in Northumberland last weekend.
Craster is a little fishing harbour village located thirteen miles south of Bamburgh. It has a little fantastic kipper smokehouse where you can buy the famous 'Craster Kipper' as well as a harbour that has a few boats lining its banks such as these two.
I like the inclusion of the harbour wall in the background, situated high enough to stay clear of the boats and with little detail in the sky, it made for a strikingly simple image.
I hope you're all having a wonderful weekend.

I was assisting my 1-2-1 client yesterday down at Ashness Bridge when having made sure that Andrew bagged himself a beauty, I then shot this scene. Andrew saw the potential in the scene that you can see and between us, we ended up with this composition of this lovely old stone packhorse bridge.
It is located on the road to Watendlath which starts opposite the iconic Ashness Landing Pier. The bridge is very tight and care must be taken when driving over it yet it draws large numbers of people daily who want to capture it on camera. I'm happy enough with the composition.
What do you think?

WOW, what another stunning day in Lancashire, that's two in a row now. I spent yesterday on a 1-2-1 tuition day on the Blackpool/Fleetwood coast and the same today while leading a one-day long exposure workshop for four people.
Central Pier is easily my favourite of the three that adorn the Blackpool seafront and it dates back to 1863 which makes it 154 years old. Quite an achievement considering the battering it takes during the winter period but on a gorgeous day like today, it looks fantastic. It has several rides on top including the magnificent ferris wheel which I have caught here at just four seconds which gives it a look of motion which I like.
Have a wonderful Bank Holiday weekend everyone. I hope you enjoy whatever you have planned. Me? Staying home watching F1 from Monaco (I'm a huge F1 fan).

I forgot to post this image weeks ago of Crummock Water as taken on my recent four-day Lake District workshop in the Lakes at the end of October.
I decided to take my clients to Crummock Water mid afternoon as I knew that the light would illuminate this beautiful little island and have it stand out among the darker backdrop of Mellbreak Fell behind.
I walked to the highest point of the surrounding land in order to give me enough elevation to have the tips of the trees on the island rest lower than the waterline of Mellbreak behind. I love isolating my subjects within water, be it a jetty, trees or even an island.

WOW, what a day to choose to run a one day workshop in the glorious Yorkshire Dales yesterday. I got to enjoy some stunning weather with three clients of mine and the buttercups, stone barns and the rolling green dales of Yorkshire never looked so good.
The scene in this photo awaits you on walking through a few houses in the very centre of the village of Muker. Go through the gate and stand and admire such beauty. The buttercups are out at this time of the year but not for long. The sight of a million yellow flowers helps bring the scene alive and I am so thankful that we all got to appreciate the fine views before today's rain.
I hope you all like it and feel free to SHARE if you wish :D

There are sunrises that you witness and photograph that have you feel so blessed to be alive to experience them. I had such a morning on Wednesday when I arrived at the harbour at Rethymno pre-dawn to decide on a composition of the lighthouse framed by the archway of the Tourist Information Office (which I captured) but it was this one in particular had that me a little excited.
Why? Because once I had blocked the rising sun behind the Cretan date palm tree (Phoenix Theophrasti for those interested) and realised that the branches would frame both the lighthouse and the streetlight from above, I knew the shot would work.
So this is the lovely little harbour of Rethymno where cafes and restaurants line the water's edge while small boats bob up and down in the water. Arrive pre-dawn and you pretty much have the place to yourself bar the odd reveller who are making their way back to base after a night on the tiles.
I love cities and towns pre-dawn because I get to experience them at their quietest. It's a very special time to be out and about with your camera.
Little wonder why I cannot wait to return April 2020 to run a workshop there. If you are interested in joining me, give me a shout and I shall put you on the waiting list when more information becomes available which will be around Thursday/Friday.

Beach Life, Rethymno, Crete, Greece
I so enjoyed my week long trip to the beautiful island of Crete in Greece back in April 2019 (seems like a lifetime ago now). I recently came across this image and it reminded me of that wonderful morning spent in Rethymno where the sun shone and the skies never looked bluer.
I arrived at the Venetian harbour at 6.30am to photograph the lighthouse at sunrise (7.10am), and it was a lovely sunrise and as Rethymno is such a lovely city, I opted to stay on and shoot the beach until mid-morning.
One of the things that I love about the beaches in popular tourists destinations abroad is that there is an awful lot to photograph, with so many different subjects on offer. I settled on this beach hut complete with the palm tree and just as I had set up, two chaps walked down and started getting out some cleaning equipment. I don't mind admitting that initially I was cursing them under my breath for getting in my shot but as the minutes rolled by, I saw them as a great opportunity to capture them in action.
I did not want the conventional shot of two guys washing down the hut so I opted to set the shutter speed to 20 seconds with a Kase 10 Stop ND filter attached and the effect was exactly what I was wanting. A creative image of the guys going about their business while being completely unrecognisable and I love the ghostly effect that the filter has allowed me to get.
What are your thoughts? Hit or miss? I would be interested to know.
As for Crete, I first visited the stunning island back in 1999 and returned in 2010 and again in 2019. There's a quality about the island that draws me back time after time and I seriously enjoy the scenery, the people, the harbour-lined cities that allow you to sit there with a coffee and watch the world go by.
Then there are the White Mountains that divide the north of the island from the south in the west of the island and at 8,000ft, they are covered in snow until late spring (hence the name) but wow, it is sure a spectacular drive.
Crete is a place that I might run a future workshop there, perhaps in April 2022.
