London. (October 2012)

West window of the north aisle by Jonathan Watts, 2001.

St Luke's at Thurnby sits on high ground and is distinguished externally by its two-toned central tower, the dominant feature of the church and the result of separate building phases in the 13th and 15th centuries respectively. The rest of the building that surrounds it however appears to be almost entirely the result of rebuilding in the 1870s. There is however more left of the medieval building within than one might expect, as indicated by the small piece of Norman chevron molding reset within the porch.

Within the medieval nave arcades are revealed with their quaint carved heads between the arches. View of the space beyond is somewhat restricted by the heavy pillars that support the tower (of 12th century date) while the chancel beyond it is entirely of the Victorian period but attractively finished in a more costly manner than usual. There is a mixed collection of stained glass of various dates, the best being the large window by Wippell's at the east end of the south aisle.

This seems to be a well used and well loved church, and most of the people I met here were very welcoming. One lady I'd spoken to did seem a bit suspicious though and after telling me (not asking) to sign the book of condolence for the Queen seemed confused by me loitering for photos in the chancel, but I simply answered a rather demanding 'Are you all right?!' with a straight forward 'Yes' and that was that, but it did leave me feeling a little awkward.

The church won't likely be kept open outside of service times so best to visit for a service or like me time your Leicestershire churchcrawls to Ride & Stride day in September!

At Beyond, we believe that the key to success of Generation Z in the 21st century is a hacker mindset. Imagination, curiosity, determination, self organised learning and the courage to fail and experiment are the traits that will help prepare this next generation for the unknown ahead.

Forget Everything You Learned About Millennials. Meet Generation Hack.

Generation Hack is different from the Millennial generation. They are the opposites or extreme versions of Millennials. They wish their hobby would turn into a full-time job. They are mature and in control. They would rather save money than spend it. They are determined to “make a difference” and “make an impact.” Social entrepreneurship is one of the most popular career choices for them, as they intend to change the world.

Most of the people we saw on the stretch from Chapel Beach to the Mosquito River (where we turned back inland) were younger than us by at least a decade, and this triggered a conversation between Robin and me. Yes, the Memorial Day holiday had brought out the crowds, but in the past the crowds hadn't necessarily flocked to Munising and the Pictured Rocks the way they did this year. We've often had this entire coast entirely to ourselves. But this time, the Pictured Rocks were overflowing, and much of Munising was packed. Our favorite little coffee shop had a line. And everybody was young, of the generational vintage often referred to as "Millennials."

This fact led us to our thesis. We've always been unusual sorts of travelers, choosing to devote most of our accumulated wealth to road trips instead of the things many others of our generational cohort spend their money on, things like house payments or decent furniture or fancy new cars that aren't preowned Hondas. And we go to places others our age avoid, because they think these places are hard to get to on a trip involving airplanes, and there isn't anything there to keep them entertained once they arrive. No, people our age like to fly from one city to another city, or to a beach resort somewhere, or to something owned by Disney. Which really, I think is great, because that means they're not all at the Pictured Rocks clogging up Chapel Beach.

But Millennials? More and more, it looks like they travel like us.

First, you have to define what exactly a Millennial is, and that's kind of a hard nut to crack. Unlike my age cohort (firmly Generation X), Millennials themselves have used social media to take an active role in creating their own definition, and they're grumpy about the whole thing. Over the last few years, Millennials have collectively reworked the definition of themselves so that the age range has narrowed and shifted a little older, and a lot of very young people who thought they were Millennials aren't anymore. When the Millennial name first popped up, the range actually included the Millennial year, but now it's shrank down to include people born between about 1984 to 1996. That's only 12 years. In my day, a generation was 20 years long. Kids today can just barely handle a decade. This means that as of this moment, Millennials range between 23 and 35 years old.

Now, as an aside, I will say that all this is a bunch of crap, as these are arbitrary divisions decided by random people with no actual authority to declare how culture actually organizes itself. There is no actual switch somebody flipped that made people suddenly stop wearing flannel over Nirvana t-shirts and start quoting Harry Potter. Babies didn't just start calling the pound sign a hashtag in 1984. But, speaking generally, I tend to think Millennials take this whole generation-naming scheme very seriously, and they haven't yet come to the conclusion my generation did early on that the whole thing was a sham invented by some Baby Boomer marketing guru to sell more records. They're a very earnest group of people who look at the world in a literal way, and they overwhelming believe that all the previous generations have given them the shaft. (Except for my own, as many Millennials don't remember that Generation X was a thing. They think that everybody older than them is a Boomer. Which really is the most Generation X thing ever.) The fact that they're right, and they have been given the shaft only tends to make them more annoying in the eyes of the Olds, as it gives actual justification to the Millennial urge to live a life that is Authentic™.

This means that, again speaking generally, Millennials also take money very seriously (because they're less likely to have any thanks to the Boomers sucking the economy dry), and they value experience over buying a bunch of crap. When they travel, they like to go to quieter, less capitalized, more out-of-the-way places. Places like Munising and the Pictured Rocks.

So I think our secret is out. I think from now on, the kids will be coming with us.

The Holy Spirit gives people a feeling. After reading the words of God, in their hearts they are steadfast, and at peace, while those who do not obtain God’s words feel empty. Such is the power of God’s words—people have to read them, after reading them they are nourished, and they can’t do without them. It’s like when people take opium: It gives them strength, and without it they feel desperate, and have no strength. Such is the tendency among people today. Reading God’s words gives people strength. If they don’t read them, they feel listless, but after reading them, they immediately rise from their sickbed. This is the meaning of the reign of God (the Word) on earth. Some people want to leave, or have grown weary of God’s work. Regardless, they can’t depart from God’s words; no matter how weak they are, still they must depend on God’s words to live, and no matter how rebellious they are, still they do not dare to leave God’s words. When God’s words truly show their might is when God rules and wields power, and this is how God works. This, after all, is the means by which God works, and none may leave it. God’s words will spread among countless homes, they will become known to all, and only in this way will His work spread throughout the universe. Which is to say, if God’s work is to spread throughout the entire universe, then His words must be spread. On the day of God’s glory, God’s words will show their power and authority. Every one of His words from time immemorial until today will be accomplished and come true. In this way, glory will be to God on earth—which is to say, His words will reign on earth. All who are wicked will be chastised by the words in God’s mouth, all who are righteous will be blessed by the words in His mouth, and all will be established and made complete by the words in His mouth. Nor will He show any signs or wonders; all will be accomplished by His words, and His words will produce facts. Everyone on earth will celebrate God’s words, whether they be adults or children, male, female, old, or young, all people will submit beneath the words of God. God’s words will appear in the flesh, and will appear vivid and lifelike to people on earth. This is what it means for the Word to become flesh. God has come to earth primarily to accomplish the fact of “the Word become flesh,” which is to say, He has come so that His words may be issued from the flesh (not like the time of Moses in the Old Testament, when God spoke directly from the sky). After that, each of His words will be fulfilled during the Age of Millennial Kingdom, they will become facts visible before people’s eyes, and people will behold them using their own eyes without the slightest disparity. This is the supreme meaning of God’s incarnation. Which is to say, the work of the Spirit is accomplished through the flesh, and through words. This is the true meaning of “the Word become flesh” and “the Word’s appearance in the flesh.” Only God can speak the will of the Spirit, and only God in the flesh can speak on behalf of the Spirit; the words of God are made plain in God incarnate, and everyone else is guided by them. No one is exempt, they all exist within this scope. Only from these utterances can people come to know; those who do not gain in this way are daydreaming if they think they can gain the utterances from heaven. Such is the authority demonstrated in God’s incarnate flesh: making all believe. Even the most venerable experts and religious pastors cannot speak these words. They must all submit beneath them, and none will be able to make another start. God will use words to conquer the universe. He will do this not by His incarnate flesh, but through using the utterances from the mouth of God become flesh to conquer all people in the entire universe; only this is the Word become flesh, and only this is the appearance of the Word in the flesh. Perhaps, to people, it appears as if God hasn’t done much work—but God has but to utter His words for people to be thoroughly convinced, and for them to be overawed. Without facts, people shout and scream; with the words of God, they fall silent. God will surely accomplish this fact, for this is God’s long-established plan: accomplishing the fact of the Word’s arrival on earth. Actually, there is no need for Me to explain—the arrival of the Millennial Kingdom on earth is the arrival of God’s words on earth. New Jerusalem’s descent from heaven is the arrival of God’s words to live among man, to accompany man’s every action, and all his inmost thoughts. This is also the fact that God will accomplish, and the wonderful scene of the Millennial Kingdom. This is the plan set by God: His words will appear on earth for a thousand years, and they will manifest all of His deeds, and complete all of His work on earth, after which this stage of mankind shall come to an end. from “The Millennial Kingdom Has Arrived”
