Ecliptic Millennial Arch. Napier. New Zealand.
This sculpture is placed on Marine Parade to line up with the position that the sun rose on the day of the dawning of the new millennium.
This sculpture celebrates the new millennium and is made from a steel arch of round pipe. At the top two large, highly polished, domed stainless steel discs are fastened back to back. They reflect what is behind the viewer, either the rising sun over the sea, or the lights and Norfolk Island Pines of Marine Parade. The work is lined up to where the sun rose on the day of the dawning of the new millennium. At night it is lit by rings of flexible neon tube between the two discs, which shine out like a halo or rising moon or even an eclipse.
Ecliptic is the name of the path that the sun traces across the heavens throughout the four seasons. It is a reference to David's knowledge of celestial navigation which he acquired while sailing to New Zealand. The concept of the sculpture is thus drawn from direct personal experience. In "shooting the sun" the navigator brings the sun down to the horizon in the sextant's mirrors, and rocks it gently back and forth in an arc over the horizon.
The sculpture is constructed of Steel and stainless steel and is 19m long x 5.5m high, beside the sea on Marine Parade. Ecliptic was placed here by the Napier City Council Millennium Sub-committee to mark the beginning of the third millennium.
To find the point where the sun rose at the start of the millennium, follow a line from the rock through the centre of the arch to the horizon.

And warm will be the days and the nights that burn the hills, the heavens and the seas.
And the seven winds will race the earth in whirlwinds of storm roaring like dragons and howling like wolves in the mountains.
And the tides will wake the Giant Adamastor in the cliffs that crumble taking the beaches and the Men of the sea but also the songs of the mermaids of the antiquity.
Thirty-one cycles of seasons will follow the two thousands that have passed when the millennial storms will come.
Through storms and cyclones never seen, swirls of voices that can not be heard anymore.
And they follow each other again and again, not sparing the days nor the nights lost, let alone the verses of the forgotten poets.
Do not pray to the heavens for the lost loves and glories, for they will no longer hear ... Eordhyon was free !

Times Square is an amazing place to watch the human animal in one of its favourite habitats - with lots more of them around. The variety of nationalities and cultures is rich indeed, creating a wildly varying weave of colours, codes of dress, body language, accent, idiom and nuance. Here is the 21st Century village square, the market at the core of the traditional city or town, the world over.
Forms, styles and details may change but this is the social human animal still gathering in groups while both loving it and hating it all the same.

Music Link: "Voiceprint" ( edit ) - Jon Hassell, from his album "City: Works of Fiction". The re-release of the classic 90's album comes with a previously unreleased live set done in New York City and a collection of edits and remixes of the original tracks by various artists. This is a mash-up if one of those. Hassell is no stranger to digital culture and in fact, he's one of its most eloquent proponents.
Here the Latin rhythms and Hip Hop vocals combine with digital film footage and effects to produce a boldly contemporary "folk art" of an urban 21st Century.

Taking an old, unused "Pano-Sabotage ( TumbleWorld ) piece from last Spring ( 2015 ) and subjecting it to photo manipulation to express the explosion of colour that Spring is. My 'take' is a visionary one as opposed to a pure recording. In my mind, this is how I see these things. ( This version created May 5, 2016 ).
Again, the pixelation provides a few themes - an open admission of the digital medium from which this image sprang and where it resides, a contrast to the irregularity and "irrationality" of Nature, a springboard from which to see that contrast leap, and an understanding that we somehow need a balance of both.
Jackson Pollock and Ad Reinhardt run smack into each other. ;-)

Music Link: "Lux" - Brian Eno, from his album "Lux". This is a 4 minute plus edit that was played online on Nov. 17, 2012, four times that day. Each playing was meant to coincide with four periods of the day, Sunrise, Morning, Afternoon and Night. This specific project was called "Day of Light".
Photographers from all over the world were invited to register on Eno's website and to participate by sending images in that were shot ONLY while "Lux" was performed. So unless you were fast, your images were pretty unprocessed.
As a registered participant, you were able to send in as many images as you wished, one after another. Eno and his staff were standing by, capturing submissions and then showing them as visuals to the performance of "Lux". Once submitted, there was a short lag, followed by an automatic email confirmation that your piece was accepted and was in queue to be played. It was very exciting. So each photographer could rightly say that they had collaborated with Brian Eno on the "Day of Light" project.
I was one of those photographers. 3 of my shots were used. Since thousands of submissions were tendered, it's not surprising that none of my three made the final cut that you see here. No matter. I am proud to have participated in the actual event.
Light - bright, heaven-like radiance, being the main support and substrate of my image here, I chose "Lux" as accompaniment for that reason and also to remember my participation in the "Day of Light" project. "The Bursting Life" ... was NOT one of the images used.

Another shot for the millennials and aging hippies that have their collective heads stuck in the sand (snow) and refuse to feel the burn ... pardon me ... the freeze. :-)
This was taken just outside Sally's Cove on Newfoundland's Great Northern Peninsula. The sea ice has been rafted up close to two stories high in places by the action of the wind, current, and tides.
A beautiful sight to see! And yes, that ice you see stretching far off into the distance reaches the other shore ... mainland Canada ... way over there somewhere. And it's not that piece of land you see sticking out on the right of the photo. That's just part of the Newfoundland coast a little farther north of where I was standing. No, this is definitely not just an ice cube or two in your whisky or gin and tonic.

Federation Pavilion, Centennial Park, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
On my last proper morning in Sydney (we are there for another night, but we are at the Airport, which doesn't count in my books) I went for a walk around Centennial Park which is located a couple of minutes walk from where we were staying.
I came across this building which was built in 1988, and is probably one of the most important buildings in Australia's history. But I don't think most Australians would recognise the building or know what it contains.
Inside this modern building is the Federation Stone, which marks the combining of the six independant states of Australia into the "Federal Commonwealth of Australia", on 1 January 1901. The birth of the nation as it were.
This building was built to mark the bicentennial of Australia and was designed by Alexander Thanes. The inscription on the sandstone frieze of the Pavilion, just below the dome, 'Mammon or Millennial Eden', is a paraphrased question posed in the poem "Australia" by Bernard O'Dowd, written in 1901.

The Uros descend from a millennial town that, according to legends, are "pukinas" who speak Uro or Pukina and that believe they are the owners of the lake and water. Uros used to say that they have black blood because they did not feel the cold. Also they call themselves "Lupihaques" (Sons of The Sun). Nowadays, Uros do not speak the Uro language, nor practice their old beliefs but keep some old customs.[2]

The Uros traded with the Aymara tribe on the mainland, intermarrying with them and eventually abandoning the Uro language for that of the Aymara. About 500 years ago they lost their original language. When conquered by the Inca empire, they had to pay taxes to them, and often were made (Wiki)

Two icons of modern London, both as they were born around the turn of the century. The Millennium Wheel (as I still think of it) was opened to the public in March 2000, and Portcullis House opened its doors to the MPs of Westminster officially about a year later.
This area is always insanely busy, crammed with tourists, especially on a Saturday afternoon. However, if you raise the camera a little and zoom in you can pretend all the people aren't there, and focus on these neighbours who are just separated by the Thames ...
This trio of Millennial friends are having a nice, warm get-together over coffee and cigarettes at a Los Angeles coffee house. Not a human voice could be heard. The person in the foreground (and several others) appear to be some sort of androids with the electricity emerging from their skulls manifesting as colored lights. It looks good! What is odd is that they would get together and then start using their smart phones to.....do what? Message other people? Watch a baseball game?
This is odd and rude behavior where I come from. To me, this is no different than in 1973 getting together with a couple of friends after work and then everyone pulls out a paperback book and starts reading it or starts writing a letter to someone. Same thing. Exactly. What has changed is what is considered to be polite and thoughtful behavior as well as perhaps the degree of interest people actually have about their friends' lives.

Introduction
The New Jerusalem has descended from heaven; God’s word has appeared in the flesh. God’s chosen people witness with their own eyes that everything God says is accomplished and fulfilled one after the other, and that God’s word is reigning on the whole earth. The long-awaited Millennial Kingdom has descended to earth. All God’s people are heartily enjoying God’s abundance and proclaiming God’s word. They are singing and dancing to praise the arrival of the day that God is glorified.
Singing of the Millennial Kingdom Descending Among Men
1. The Millennial Kingdom has descended among men, God’s word has conquered the whole earth, reigning on the whole earth, reigning on the whole earth, and everything has come into being and stood fast because of God’s word, because of God’s word, for us to see with our own eyes, for us to see with our own eyes. We shout for joy, and we sing, singing of the Millennial Kingdom having descended to earth. We shout for joy, and we sing, singing of the New Jerusalem descending from heaven. God’s word is among us and lives with, lives with us, accompanying our every act and move,every mind and thought.
2. The only true Almighty God who is self-existing and ever-existing, Your word has appeared in the flesh, living and real for all people to see. Your words from before the ages until today have been accomplished one by one, accomplished one by one and fulfilled one by one. We shout for joy, and we sing, singing of God’s word displaying authority and power. We shout for joy, and we sing, singing of God’s word ruling on earth, on earth. God has gained, has gained greater glory on earth. God’s word has occupied our whole being for us to become God’s manifestation, become God’s manifestation.
3. All people on the whole earth, adult or child, male or female, old or young, are proclaiming God’s word. All people become subject under God’s word and come to worship God. The whole kingdom is a scene of jubilation. We shout for joy, and we sing, singing of the coming of the day God gains glory. We shout for joy, and we sing, singing of God’s deeds having been revealed. Only the practical God is the spring of living water, the spring of living water, ever-flowing, for us to enjoy, for us to enjoy and to nourish our hearts.
4. The beautiful prospect of the kingdom is bright and even more infinite. All God’s people are beaming with smiles in heart, for what has long been expected has now become a reality. How could we not dance for joy and give glory to God? We shout for joy, and we sing, singing of and praising God’s almightiness and wisdom. We shout for joy, and we sing, singing of God’s work having been crowned with success. We shout for joy, and we sing. The practical God is personally leading us into the good land of Canaan to enjoy God’s riches, to enjoy God’s riches.
