Winnebago Mills, erected 1852-53. It was the first mill in Neenah to make what is now called "purified flour", (from page 187 of Cunningham's History of Neenah).
Once used to wear down and soften newly spun cloth, milling frolics are now a powerful form of entertainment. Gaelic songs are song to the beat of the cloth as the staff at Highland Village Museum carry on this tradition.
Our local paper mill, to be honest I think this is mostly steam and it was a very cold morning. I just wanted to try some 'smokey' shots to see how the movement worked.

Yes, there is still a mill in Millbrook! In past days, there were many different mills here. What remains today is the top half of a mill that was moved here to replace one destroyed in a fire in 1909. Below the mill, a small brook flows through the area.

This hdyro-powered grain mill and museum is worth going out of your way to see. "Nestled in a lush green cove along the banks of beautiful Factory Creek stands historic Falls Mill. Built in 1873 as a cotton and woolen factory, the mill was later converted for use as a cotton gin, then as a woodworking shop. Today the water wheel powers millstones that grind cornmeal, flour, and grits." --from www.fallsmill.com on April 23, 2011.
Graue Mill and Museum, an operating waterwheel grist mill and homestead, is dedicated to maintaining a bridge between past and present generations in the belief that understanding our history is vital to our future. The Museum provides programs -- for school children and others -- that include milling, spinning and weaving and living history presentations, as well as artifacts which illustrate the way of life of area residents between 1850 and 1890 and the impact mills such as Graue Mill had on our culture.

The mill pond at Beaulieu. The sun was so low in the sky that it hurt my eyes when I was driving. But it was casting some lovely light over the water.

Jackson's Mill is a former grist mill in Lewis County, West Virginia. The center of the Jackson farm was located on the peninsula formed by the confluence of Freeman's Creek and the West Fork River. Edward Jackson (1759–1828) built a home on a prominent knoll 100 yards from the West Fork; the two-story frontier-style log structure was 40 feet by 20. On the other (east) side of the river, he built a sawmill and grist mill in 1809. The mill currently on the site was built in 1837. In 1830, 6 year old Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson would be sent here to live with his uncle. The young Thomas lost his father in 1826 to typhoid fever and his mother was ill and would pass in 1831 from a combination of child birth and pulmonary illness. Young Thomas Jackson would live and learn here until his appointment to the Virginia Military Institute.
