Notes: Georges Durand (1864–1941) was the creator of the first major automobile races in France, notably as the founder of the Automobile Club de la Sarthe (which became the Automobile Club de l’Ouest) and the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race, inaugurated in 1923. He was not known as amateur photographer but these came from his personal album of landscape photographs from Sarthe and Mayenne, Province of Maine in France. He may have been assisted by a photographer from Le Mans named Rabiller, who may also have made the prints. In the album there is a photograph taken by Rabiller of Durand taking a photograph.

Harmony Mills in Cohoes NY was once the world's largest textile mill. It is now under renovation to become the new "Harmony Mills Lofts". Pilar and Orlando will be moving here in December 2005!

As it was in September 2007. The mill was relatively untouched, although it looked like two of the doors had recently been repaired after incursions by vandals.
The Dexter Grist Mill in Sandwich is a historic gem, especially during the winter months. Nestled along Lower Shawme Pond, the mill offers a picturesque view with its charming old-world architecture. While the mill is typically open for tours from June to October, you can still enjoy the scenic beauty of the area during winter. The surrounding landscape, with its historic charm and serene waters, makes it a lovely spot for a peaceful winter walk.

The Hendricks/Apex Mill, originally constructed in 1918, was a part of the gold rush that built Bannack’s economy. At this mill, miners extracted gold from ore using cyanide solutions, which was a common practice during the 19th century gold rush. As one of only two intact mills open to the public in Montana, the Hendricks/Apex mill is a very important relic of the state’s industrial past. MHF assisted in the preservation of this building by providing grant money to Bannack State Park for the reconstruction of the mill’s roof. constructed in 1918
Here are the Kualoa Sugar Mill Ruins in Hawaii. They are located on the ranch where some of filming of Lost is done. Beautiful!

Laughlin Mill, the original three-story log structure was built by William Laughlin around 1763. The Laughlin family also built the dam which provided enough water power to turn the water wheel and grind wheat and other grain. The mill was owned by the Laughlin family until 1896, when it was sold to the Newville Water Company which installed turbine used to pump water through the main pipes of the town. The current structure is a restoration.
This is the oldest mill structure remaining in this region and one of the most photographed sites in Cumberland Valley.
Historic Marker: An on-site marker reads: "Grist mill built about 1763 by William Laughlin. Owned by his family until 1896. Preserved by Ethel T. McCarthy. The oldest such structure remaining in this region."
Once the largest textile mill in the region, Dalton Mills employed over 2000 workers. Built by Joseph Craven in 1869, the new mill replaced a much smaller 1780′s building. In its heyday between 1869 and 1877 the mill provided jobs for workers all over Keighley and the Worth Valley.
In 1889 the contents of the mills were sold at auction. A noble comb was sold for £30 and a pair of standard scales and weights fetched one shilling (5p). The total at the end of just one day of the sale was £11,585. Part of the proceeds went to buy new equipment, some to pay debts, a portion to pay the remaining employees.
In 1904, the flywheel which transferred the power from a huge beam engine (the largest in the world) to drive the looms exploded. The engine was replaced within two months by a pair of horizontal engines.
As the textile industry declined, the fortunes of Dalton Mills changed and up until 2004, it had been virtually empty for almost a decade. John Craven, the great-great grandson of Joseph, who had built the mill, eventually chose to sell Dalton Mills to Magna Holdings, to ensure it’s survival.
This is a picture of work started in 2005 at the mill to make into condos.. I took a digital picture of 35mm photo for posting.. After I got a digital camera no more film..
Built in 1825 by Benjamin Hagood who stopped griding the grist mill in 1960. Deeded for restoration to the Pickens County Museum Commission in 1972 and placed on the national Historic Register the same year.

I went to the old mill as part of my photography course at school and found it really interesting.
it's a real shame that some people find it necessary to abuse and destroy buildings in this way.
i'm not completely against graffiti etc. because some of it looks amazing, where as other parts look awful.
the building itself is in awful condition as it has quite obviously been a victim of arson a few times. the floors have various holes in and the ceilings are falling apart.
apart from those factors it's a location which is a prime example of Halifax's rise in the industrial world.
Wookey Hole Caves is a show cave and tourist attraction in the village of Wookey Hole on the southern edge of the Mendip Hills near Wells in Somerset, England.
Wookey Hole cave was formed through erosion of the limestone hills by the River Axe. Before emerging at Wookey Hole the water enters underground streams and passes through other caves such as Swildon's Hole and St Cuthbert's Swallet. After resurging, the waters of the River Axe are used in a handmade paper mill, the oldest extant in Britain, which began operations circa 1610, although a corn grinding mill operated there as early as 1086.
