A steel mill I have driven past for years, dreaming of the chance to get inside, is finally abandoned. This quickly became a top priority on our most recent European explore-a-thon. Just down the road from it is an excellent Doner Kabab shop.

nrhp # 16000527- The Brightwells Mill Complex historic 19th-century mill complex at 684 Brightwells Mill Road in Madison Heights, Amherst County, Virginia. It includes a reconstructed 1826 wood-frame mill, dam, miller's house, a number of outbuildings, and a small cemetery. The dam and mill both date to 1942, when a flash flood destroyed 19th-century structures. The mill was rebuilt using materials salvaged from the 1826 mill, while the dam was rebuilt in concrete. The mill was used to process the grain of local farmers until 1965.[2]
The complex was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2016.

Next door to the Green Mill jazz club is Fiesta Mexicana Restaurant. The building still has the old Green Mill Gardens inscription from its former glory days.
From chicago.urban-history.org/sites/ballroom/grn_mill.htm:
"Opened in 1914, the Green Mill Gardens, located at the northwest corner of Broadway and Lawrence Avenue, was one of Chicago's hottest night spots during the height of jazz music's popularity during the 1920s and 1930s.
"The site of the Green Mill Gardens had a long history as an amusement center. In the early 1880s, long before Uptown became a fashionable and densely populated residential and commercial district, a roadhouse, commonly known as Pop Morse's Gardens, operated at the location. It was a well-known stopover for travelers and a popular destination for day-trippers from the city of Chicago. Pop Morse's consisted of a restaurant and outdoor beer gardens. As Uptown grew and prospered, the Pop Morse's became an important neighborhood institution by providing a place for area residents to meet and mingle.
"In the early 1910s, Pop Morse's was purchased by Tom Chamales, who proposed tearing down the old roadhouse and building a high-class restaurant and leisure resort in its place. Chamales and his fellow investors sunk $250,000 into the project. When it opened in June 1914, Green Mill Gardens was one of the most elegant night spots in all of Chicago. Its elegant Della Robbia dining room offered patrons nightly cabaret performances while its 2,500-seat outdoor sunken gardens hosted band concerts during the summer months. "
Ah, the good old days...

Remnants of Chapman's Mill, a grist mill built in 1742 at Thoroughfare Gap on the border of Prince William and Fauquier county, Virginia. Situated beside the historical Manassas Gap Railroad (now a branch line of Norfolk Southern Railroad's Washington Disctrict), the mill played a large part during the Civil War battles of First and Second Manassas. Unfortuneately gutted by arson file in 1998, the shell of the mill still offers some wonderful photo opportunities.

After soaking, the corn is ground in a mill called a pilón, then cooked on grills over charcoal flame. "Instant" arepa flours are increasingly common in Colombia and other parts of arepa-loving Latin America, but this is the real deal right here.

This mill is right across the river from my second favorite pizza place in Westford. I have been eating here for about three months, but I had never really noticed the mill before.

The sunny week that followed last week's storms did not bode well for our planned waterfall shooting. This image will have to do for now; we'll just have to return another time...
