During our 2016 vacation, we visited the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill museum in Salem, Oregon, part of the Willamette Heritage Center.
Crystal Mill Colorado was on our list for our fall color trip. We ended up off-roading from the town of Marble (which has the best BBQ restaurant) to Crystal Mill, deep in the Rocky Mountains. Man I was so excited to finally visit the the Crystal Mill. I've always just seen photos. This is one of the most photographed locations in Colorado and you can see why. We ended up staying for sunset because the light looked promising. And sure enough the sky lite up. This shot is two exposures blended together.
Grade II Listed cotton mill at New Mills, Derbyshire, also known as Strafford's Mill after Daniel Strafford who had it built in the 1780s.
An image of Babcock mill. The one I feel in Mill creek after shooting.

60085 passes Horace Mill in Cononley also known as Station Mill. It was built in 1837 and at its height of production employed 3/4s of the available workforce in the town. It is now closed and has been converted into apartments having laid derelict for many years.
The class 60 was working the 6D37 1227 Rylstone to Hunslet. Class 60s have been putting an appearance on this line of late due to their poor reliability when working the Liverpool to Drax Biomass trains.
It looks like 60085 needs to visit the wash plant with all that exhaust dirt covering the cab end. We witnessed her belching out clouds of black smoke during the 1Z10 photo shoot to the area indicating she might need some more serious attention.
Mills Lake - After catching alpenglow at the trailhead, Kay and I hiked to Mills Lake. We got there just in time for a beautiful reflection and some nice soft light. About 15 minutes after we arrived the sun emerged from the clouds and a breeze erased the reflection.
I love all the benefits of starting the day early, but Kay and I are working on plans to be at the higher lakes even earlier and staying later.
Finally made the trek to photograph this old red mill up in Clinton, NJ. It has been photographed perhaps tens or even hundreds of thousands of times, making it hard to be unique, so instead I just had some fun with this Jersey icon.
Preston Mill is a watermill on the River Tyne at the eastern edge of East Linton on the B1407 Preston Road, in East Lothian, Scotland, UK
There has been a mill on the site since the 16th century. The present mill dates from the 18th century and is in the care of the National Trust for Scotland. It was used commercially until 1959, and it produced oatmeal. The River Tyne still drives the water wheel, and the machinery can still be seen at work by visitors taking part in a tour. There is also an exhibition about milling, and a mill pond.
The engineer and millwright Andrew Meikle maintained the mill in the 18th century. In 1948 a flood submerged the buildings, and in 1950 a local land owner gave the mill to the National Trust for Scotland. The milling firm Rank Hovis McDougall provided help with the renovation and expertise to allow the mill to be operative again.
Preston Mill consists of a kiln, a mill, and the miller's house. The mill wheel dates back to 1909. The mill is loved by visitors, painters and photographers, especially the kiln with its conical red pantile roof. (source Wikipedia).

The water comes from a spring to power the mill near Mitchell, Indiana. A quarter mile waterway course connects the spring to the mill. Unique being this far north in that it never freezes. The mill opened in 1817 with the limestone supports quarried locally.

Dean Clough Mills in Halifax are a group of sixteen Grade II listed mill buildings built in the 1840s - 60s for Crossley's Carpets, becoming one of the world's largest carpet factories (half a mile long with 1,250,000 square feet of floorspace). After years of declining production it closed in 1983, when it was bought by a consortium led by Sir Ernest Hall which developed the Grade II listed site for various commercial and cultural uses. It is now seen as a leading example of successful urban regeneration. The converted mills now house about 150 large and small businesses and arts venues.
In this view the gable end is Bowling Mill and left foreground is Fearnley Mill. Behind is D Mill with E Mill behind that with the Dean Clough sign on the roof.
Historic Hyde Mill is always a wonderful place to visit. I guess I am getting old. I have about 20 years of pictures of this old mill. The mill is a wonderful place to sit and ponder what is important in life.

Brograve Mill is a windpump located on Brograve level in the parish of Sea Palling within the Norfolk Broads National Park, United Kingdom. It can be found at grid reference TG448235 and is approximately 1 mile north of Horsey Mere. The mill is a grade II listed building.
The Brograve windmill water pump is of red brick construction, now lying in an extremely dilapidated and unsafe state. Built in 1771 by Sir Berney Brograve, 1st Baronet (1726–1797), it is thought to have last worked around 1930. The mill had an 8-bladed windmill fantail, with a boat-shaped cap carrying two pairs of patent shuttered sails, powering an internal turbine pump. Its purpose was to drain the Brograve levels into the man-made Waxham New Cut. It is one of two mills on this water course, the other being Lambridge Mill (also derelict), located about 2 miles west of Sea Palling.
Only two stocks and two stubs of the original sails remain. The mill has a very westward lean to it, inspiring the myth that a furious Devil tried to foil Brograve's drainage efforts by blowing it down. Separated by the Cut, Brograve Mill cannot be directly reached on foot. However, it can be seen very closely from various eastern perspectives by following a path along the Waxham New Cut from Horsey Mere, where there is also a farm track on private property owned by Brograve Farm. The only direct access the mill would be by boat along the Waxham New Cut, however entering the structure is strongly discouraged as it is in a very unsafe state.

Historic Mill in Laconia, New Hampshire, built in 1853. The mill once manufactured knitted hosiery, powered by the plentiful waters of the Winnipesaukee River. The building is now utilized as office space for doctors and lawyers. To the left is the power house for the Avery dam, and off in the distance is the Belknap Mill. To the right is Laconia City Hall.

Exploring the area this morning and wanting to try my new PolarPro filter set. Very nice to see almost no colour cast.
One of just two operational tidally powered mills left in the UK, Eling tide mill is over 200 years old. It sits at the boundary of Eling Creek and the Bartley Water River in the Southampton Suburb of Totton, Hampshire, UK.
I spent two hours in this spot just doing some long exposures. I really LOVE my ND filter. It really is so much fun. I appreciate having it alot...especially in places like this.
more to come.
