Dean Clough Mills in Halifax are a group of sixteen Grade II listed mill buildings built in the 1840s - 60s for Crossley's Carpets, becoming one of the world's largest carpet factories (half a mile long with 1,250,000 square feet of floorspace). After years of declining production it closed in 1983, when it was bought by a consortium led by Sir Ernest Hall which developed the Grade II listed site for various commercial and cultural uses. It is now seen as a leading example of successful urban regeneration. The converted mills now house about 150 large and small businesses and arts venues.

In this view the gable end is Bowling Mill and left foreground is Fearnley Mill. Behind is D Mill with E Mill behind that with the Dean Clough sign on the roof.

Pin Mill is a hamlet on the south bank of the tidal River Orwell, on the outskirts of the village of Chelmondiston, on the Shotley peninsula in southern Suffolk. It lies within the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is a designated Conservation Area..wrecks beached along the foreshore of the River Orwell, which were once sailing cargo vessels. Some of these boats are lived in as houseboats, but others have been abandoned as dramatic wrecks and are slowly being reclaimed by the forces of nature.

Brograve Mill is a windpump located on Brograve level in the parish of Sea Palling within the Norfolk Broads National Park, United Kingdom. It can be found at grid reference TG448235 and is approximately 1 mile north of Horsey Mere. The mill is a grade II listed building.

The Brograve windmill water pump is of red brick construction, now lying in an extremely dilapidated and unsafe state. Built in 1771 by Sir Berney Brograve, 1st Baronet (1726–1797), it is thought to have last worked around 1930. The mill had an 8-bladed windmill fantail, with a boat-shaped cap carrying two pairs of patent shuttered sails, powering an internal turbine pump. Its purpose was to drain the Brograve levels into the man-made Waxham New Cut. It is one of two mills on this water course, the other being Lambridge Mill (also derelict), located about 2 miles west of Sea Palling.

Only two stocks and two stubs of the original sails remain. The mill has a very westward lean to it, inspiring the myth that a furious Devil tried to foil Brograve's drainage efforts by blowing it down. Separated by the Cut, Brograve Mill cannot be directly reached on foot. However, it can be seen very closely from various eastern perspectives by following a path along the Waxham New Cut from Horsey Mere, where there is also a farm track on private property owned by Brograve Farm. The only direct access the mill would be by boat along the Waxham New Cut, however entering the structure is strongly discouraged as it is in a very unsafe state.

Historic Mill in Laconia, New Hampshire, built in 1853. The mill once manufactured knitted hosiery, powered by the plentiful waters of the Winnipesaukee River. The building is now utilized as office space for doctors and lawyers. To the left is the power house for the Avery dam, and off in the distance is the Belknap Mill. To the right is Laconia City Hall.

Exploring the area this morning and wanting to try my new PolarPro filter set. Very nice to see almost no colour cast.

..this is another perspective of the mill i posted several weeks ago. pp:topaz studio

This mill is modern but is supposed to occupy the same position as the mill belonging to the castle of Edrington commonly called the Cawmills...'. No longer in use and in state of disrepair 1999. The new statistical account records how the water wheel '...not only drives the mill, but also a thrashing machine, situated upwards 500ft above it, by means of a shaft 600ft long which runs through a tunnel in the rock above.' The mill lade is still in place and although not used since 1937, the building is particularly notable for having retained much of its original machinery. The plaque (now Missing) on the front elevation records the level to which it was submerged during the flood of August 12th 1948. Owned by Cawderstanes House (1999). Although in poor condition, the mill's early date, substantial size and machinery render it a particularly notable structure.

Building Dates

1789, later additions and alterations.

The mill was vacated in 1948 following floods. External inspection reveals it to be in poor condition and unsecured.

The slate and pan tiled roofs have been replaced with corrugated metal since the building was listed in 1999. The masonry appears to be crumbling at the gable-head of the south-west elevation.

I spent two hours in this spot just doing some long exposures. I really LOVE my ND filter. It really is so much fun. I appreciate having it alot...especially in places like this.

more to come.

Houghton Mill was almost demolished, then saved by the local villagers and restored to working order to carry on the tradition of milling on this site for over 1,000 years.

Big Otter Mill, also known as Forbes Mill, is a historic grist mill located near Bedford, Bedford County, Virginia. It was built about 1920, and is a large, 2 1/2-story, mortise-and-tenon framed mill building, topped by an unusual and picturesque mansard roof. The mill retains a nearly complete set of early-20th century machinery, including a 13 feet in diameter water wheel, which was used until the late 1940s.

Another Friday spent along the rails of Cape Cod did not disappoint.

The noon Canal Excursion from Buzzards Bay is headed south to its turnaround point at the great marshes in Barnstable. It is seen here crossing Mill Creek in the center of Sandwich at MP 62 on the MassDOT owned and Mass Coastal operated former New Haven Railroad Cape Mainline.

Leading the way is MC 2009, a rare model GP28 built by EMD in Nov. 1964 for the Illinois Central as their #9439. Only 31 of the 1800 hp units were built and only 16 of those were for US roads. Bracketing the five car train on the north end is recently repainted FL9 #2011 (blt. Sept. 1960 as NH #2038).

This is a picture of the Paper mill that is like 5 miles from where I live I had to blur the name on the building cause i don't think I could have posted it online otherwise. If you ever drove by a paper mill it smells like really rotten eggs.

The Colorado icon, mill in Crystal. This is located on a 4 mile rough 4x4 road. one of the most photographed historic buildings in the country, most people hike the 4x4 road instead of driving it. we chose to drive it and camped over night. it had rained most of the day and all night, we had a small window where blue skies made an appearance.

The 1890 Empress Flour Mill on Queen Street is category C industrial heritage building, which means that its removal is a permitted activity. There are two plaques on the front of the building, one relating to the 118 year old structure and the other to the 1921 grain silos. With a height of 35 metres the category B listed heritage silos are the town's most prominent landmark. They're still in use and will not be demolished.

This fine cotton mill had to wait for the construction of the Macclesfield Canal which was started in 1831. Nowadays the floors ring with the sounds of music and chatter rather than the clatter of clogs and the roar of heavy machinery

Back in 1720 The Mill, which was once a corn mill for the Rufford Abbey estate and Rufford Lake became part of a major ongoing redevelopment. Now it's one of Nottingham's top 10 wedding venues. Recently part of the lake has been sectioned off. It's become a boating lake for the public to enjoy.

The Mill is a Grade II Listed Building (Historic England).

Grade II refers to buildings that are of special interest, warranting every effort to preserve them.

Lianna and I took advantage of the "calm before the storm" to get out and do some long exposure photography. This location is a popular location for photographers from all walks of the Earth. The Historic Bedford Mill.

In 1831 Benjamin Tett (1798-1878), later an important merchant at Newboro, anticipating the completion of the Rideau Canal, acquired a sawmill here on Buttermilk Falls. Tett and various partners, including the prominent Chaffey brothers, extensively exploited local forests and through the Canal sent timber, lumber, and cord-wood to American and St. Lawrence River market centres. Active trade and settlement of the district led him to build a store and, in 1848, construct the stone grist-mill here. After 1872 the operations, including a shingle and planing-mill and canal shipping, were continued by John Poole Tett and Benjamin Tett Jr. Depleted forests and the availability of western flour and feed seriously affected the mills and the total population declined. In 1916 the grist-mill ceased operation.
