The University of Iowa Health Care STEM Education partnered with Admissions to create a pre-medical interest day for high school students all over. The high school students had four sessions of their choosing to partake in. These sessions were Medicine: Diagnosing a Patient, Medical Student 101, Health Sciences Campus Tour, and Photons and Electrons: Cystic Fibrosis Under the Microscope. Diagnosing a Patient helped the students experience life as a medical student as they learned the history of treating a patient. At Medical Student 101, the high school students were able to ask Carver College of Medicine students what it was like to be a medical student, as they worked on hands on activities together. To be able to familiarize themselves with the UI Health Science Campus, the high school students were given a tour by a medical student. Finally, the students learned whether they were interested in patient care or research, having a solid understanding of microscopy is a critical skill for a healthcare career.

University of Iowa Health Care is committed partners with formal and informal educators and community organizations across the state to advance STEM literacy to inspire the next generation of health care professionals and build a foundation for children to understanding their own health. In FY2016, more than 22,000 school age children were engaged in hands on learning provided by 300 faculty, staff and students.
