These traditional, seasonal, mountain dairy farms provided critical pasture land that became accessible after the spring snow melt. Cows, goats, and sheep would graze here during the summer to fatten up after spending a lean winter down at the bottom of the valley in barns eating carefully rationed grain. Historically, it would be farmers' wives and daughters who would drive the livestock up the mountain to the sæter and tend them for the season. Sometimes determined suitors would make the hike up as well, sanctioned or not. Sæters are an important part of Norway's cultural heritage, in widespread use from the Viking era through the industrial revolution. Of ~100,000 sæters operating in Norway during the 1800's, only ~2% remain standing today. Fewer than a thousand remain operational for livestock grazing, and another ~1,000 have been converted to tourist lodges, hytter (holiday homes), and hiking huts.

In this view during high water season, looking northwest from an orbiting chopper, the Zambezi river flows atop a flat basalt sheet before encountering a transverse fracture zone and spilling into the gorge below, creating a mile-wide curtain of water over 100 yards/meters high. Visitors are treated to amazing views of the falls from the perpetually-wet national parks along the opposite rim of the gorge, where they are guaranteed to get a proper soaking. In the foreground, famous Victoria Falls Bridge crosses the international border between Zimbabwe to the left and Zambia to the right. Boat cruises among the islands upstream of the falls commonly afford views of hippos, elephants, and birds galore. Below the falls, white water rafting through the downstream canyon system is de rigueur, or perhaps a bungee jump from the bridge.

The Romans built this thermae complex on natural hot springs during the first century CE. Everything above the ancient column bases is a modern reconstruction from the end of the Victorian era using distinctive, local Bath stone, a honey-colored oolitic limestone that defines much of the distinctive architecture in the city. Though the original Roman version was covered by a roof 20 meters high, the reconstruction project ran out of money and so the baths remain unvaulted and open to the sky and sunlight, allowing green algae to flourish in the pools. Also, tourists taking selfies on the far side of the pool create a modern-day "accidental renaissance" tableau.
#portrait #lady #girl #srilankan #srilanka #sri_lanka #muslim #veil #green #smile #southasia #subcontinent #asia #islamic #microfourthirds #micro43rds #microfournerds #olympus #olympusomd #omd #em5 #lumixlens via Instagram ift.tt/2IOQtpP
