A shot from last summer, we’d had a evening trip to Downderry to eke out a few more hours in the weekend before returning to work on Monday. These 2 boats were gently bobbing in the swell and I liked how the horizon has merged in with the sea giving it a real minimalist look.
Last night I ventured up to Pew Tor, a scouting trop as it's new Tor for me. The clouds didn't really hang around for sunset but I did get some lovely glow over the trees in the distance so I took some shots with the long lens instead,
Yosemite National Park in California, truly a wonderous place which I was only able to spend a brief evening. I captured this shot that evening, but our little dachshund back home got injured and we had to cut our trip short returning home the next day. We’ve been down into deepest-darkest Cornwall this weekend and managed to get to Godrevy for sunset on Friday, and what a stunner it was! This was taken after I’d packed up and was walking up to the car and the colour got even deeper so I quickly unpacked again and took a long exposure from the cliff top.

Another shot of the cautious drinker. I went to Laikipia looking for a black leopard and wild dogs. I hadn’t even considered capturing a cheetah on camera, a rare sighting in those parts.

Downtime at Laikipia Wilderness River camp is never dull. There were several agamas and skinks skittering around the mosquito netting and the rocks outside my room. It was just a case of being patient to catch them at their best.

I've been to Kynance Cove many times over the years, but I wanted to find a different view so I headed up the hill behind the café. These rocks provided the perfect lead-in to the view of the island.

This image captured in Washington DC of the historic red brick Ford’s Theater which opened in 1863. Ford’s Theater was a popular entertainment venue during & post the American Civil War, as it gave the much maligned citizens of the United States capitol much needed pause to the terrible realities of the bloody conflict. The 16th President, Abraham Lincoln very much enjoyed & appreciated theater, opera and had a special affinity for Shakespeare as there were at least 10 formal occasions when he attended an event at Ford’s Theater. Tragically in the spring of 1865, while enjoying a comedy “Our American Cousin”, John Wilkes Booth who was a Confederate sympathizer entered Lincoln’s presidential booth and shot him with a single-shot Deringer pistol. President Lincoln was taken across the street to the Peterson House where he succumbed to the bullet wound then next morning sending shockwaves through a nation that had just ended a bloody Civil War. The theater remained closed for 100 years, but in 1968 with partnership of the National Park Service offers theatrical productions and interactive museum exhibits. He took all day to find on my last day in Samburu. Skittish gerenuk and a single vehicle that had spotted him as he broke cover gave him away. We watched him hunt as the sun dropped until we were told politely by a ranger that we should not still be out at that time. Very good looking cat.

Pre-Spring snowfall in our backyard, the rounds of two 100 foot pines we had taken down, coated with snow a wonderful contrast to the dark bark of the pine tree in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas in Northern California. These will be allowed to season and will eventually be split for firewood to be burnt in our wood stove. Another shot from Polhawn beach, searching for a different composition there I spotted some green seaweed clinging to the top of a rock which stood out quite nicely against glow of the sunset.
A historic Pelton Wheel that was used in mining gold during the great California Gold Rush in Nevada City California that sits at Robinson Plaza in Downtown Nevada City. I set 3 learning-proficiency-practical goals photographically for 2025 to continue my growth/evolution as an image maker, it was 3 specific areas where I lacked practical/real-world experience. This image was taken with the amazing Lensbaby Composer with a Sweet 35 Optic, which I’ve been carrying in my Tamrac bags for the last 7 years but have not used much. So that was 1 of my goals, to practice, be mindful, learn and to creatively use these wonderful tools which are already in my possession. Happy with these results, so at least 1 out 3 goals are in progress, well really 2 out of 3. I've never seemed to have much luck with sunsets at the Pentire Poppies, but after years of trying I finally managed a good one
I’ve not been out much recently due to other commitments and some pretty uninspiring weather, but I did pick up a copy of Aurora HDR in the recent Humble Bundle so I thought I’d give it a try. This is the first attempt, so far it seems simple enough to use though it’s very easy to go completely overboard and get the dreaded “HDR look”, so being gentle with sliders seems to be the key!
Colliford Lake, when there was a bit more water there! Originally taken as a bit of a snap, but I've grown to like the tones in this image.
More downtime at Laikipia Wilderness River camp. There was a huge web between my room and the mess area and I just had to get some shots of its occupants.
Nephila is a genus of araneomorph spiders noted for the impressive webs they weave. Nephila consists of numerous species found in warmer regions around the world, although some species formerly included in the genus have been moved to Trichonephila. They are commonly called golden silk orb-weavers, golden orb-weavers, giant wood spiders, or banana spiders.

Kynance Cove from the “wrong side”… I was looking for alternative views of the cove and wandered further than I normally do and decided to offset the blues of the water with the yellow from the gorse.
After the glorious colour had died down and the clouds had started to pour in and cover the sky I decided to get out the 10-stopper and have a go at a few long exposures. This is a 60 second exposure, long enough to obliterate the large waves and always looks good when paired with some of nice craggy rocks.
After we had watched the african sun drop below the hills in Samburu we raced back along the river to find the lions that we had missed earlier. The light was almost gone and I had to rely on high iso, slow shutter speeds and hoped the animals didn’t move too quickly to get a few shots.

Last Sunday I met up with Shaun from TimeSlip Photography and we made our way to Colliford Lake to see the petrified trees. The forecast was looking good for a nice sunrise, but unfortunately nothing came of it and it was just another grey morning so I decided to use monochrome to pull out some extra details from a particularly interesting tree at the side.
Friday night I took a quick trip down to Polhawn, at this time of year it’s one of the few places along Whitsand Bay that still gets the sun setting over the sea. As seems to happen fairly frequently, a bank of clouds over Cornwall ruined any chance of a proper sunset but I managed a few shots before the sun got too low in the sky.
I took a diversion on the way to work on Thursday morning, deciding to have a look and find the most perfectly placed trees in Devon… if you follow any kind of South West photography, I’m sure you’ve seen it before but this was my first trip. As there was so little wind it allowed me to take a long exposure which smooths out the water and the clouds, while still keeping details in the branches… and yes, I have tinkered with the colours to make them a bit more autumnal!
Another shot from Sunday morning at Start Point, this time a little later in the morning after the colours had faded but before the sun dived behind the clouds plunging the South West into greyness for the day!
It seems like an age since I’ve been out and captured a good sunset, I seem to keep missing them at the moment so here’s a shot of Godrevy from a few weeks ago. I do love a bit of drama on the Cornish coast!
One more from last Saturday's trip to Portwrinkle, this time a portrait shot using the waves to lead your eye to the sunrise
A nice group of Grévy's zebras in the early morning light.
Grévy's zebra is the largest living wild equid and the most threatened of the species. It is found in parts of Kenya and Ethiopia. Grévy's zebras' physical features can help to identify it from the other zebra species; their overall appearance is slightly closer to that of a mule, compared to the more "equine" (horse) appearance of the plains and mountain zebras. Compared to other zebra species, Grévy's are the tallest; they have mule-like, larger ears, and have the tightest stripes of all zebras. They have distinctively erect manes, and more slender snouts.
The Grévy's zebra live in semi-arid savanna, where they feed on grasses, legumes, and browse, such as acacia; they can survive up to five days without water. They differ from the other zebra species in that they do not live in a harem, and they maintain few long-lasting social bonds. Stallion territoriality and mother–foal relationships form the basis of the social system of the Grévy's zebra. In its native home this zebra is listed by the IUCN as endangered. Its population has declined from 15,000 to 2,000 since the 1970s. In 2016, the population was reported to be "stable"; however, as of 2020, the wild numbers are still estimated at only around 2,250 animals.

An early start on Thursday morning, as I had to go up to the office in Exeter I decided to head to Haytor on the way… I really should have left a few minutes earlier as the colour was developing nicely as I arrived at the car park and I nearly gave myself a heart attack trying to make my way up to the rocks as quickly as I could! Good job I did get there as the clouds didn’t retain too much colour once the sun had risen.
My last shot from Bedruthan Steps, I decided to leave the beach and head up the cliff for the final part of the evening where we got some lovely afterglow lighting up the clouds.
On Sunday evening I managed to get a couple of hours out of Christmas preparations and headed down to Whitsand Bay. I had originally planned to head onto the rocks around the beach but the sea was absolutely roaring so there was no way I was going to take the chance and just hung around at the base of the path. The sun dipped below the clouds on the horizon before a full-blown sunset could develop but still managed to light up the high clouds looking towards Rame Head.
Another shot from last week’s visit to “boiler beach”, which is half-way between Polhawn and Freathy on Whitsand Bay. Definitely a beach that will require further investigation over the winter months.
I had an hour to spare in Plymouth so I thought I’d try and head to Hooe to find some of the wrecked boats, somewhere I’ve seen shots of before but never found myself. Turns out they are actually quite easy to get to with just a few minutes walk along the (rather muddy) coast path, this is somewhere that definitely needs another visit under better conditions.
It’s been done before and I’m sure it’ll be done again, but it would be rude to not take a shot of St. Michael’s Mount under the Milky Way when it’s as clear as this! A bit different to my normal Milky Way shots though as this time I decided to shoot a tighter crop rather than going for my usual wide-angle which I think works for this composition as you get a lot more detail in the core.
This has to be one of my favourite rocks from along Whitsand Bay, framing from this position allows you to mask out the houses that are dotted along the hill around Millendreath allowing you to concentrate on the beauty of nature!
My third and final image from Start Point which I visited a few weeks ago, I do like to separate out images from the same visit if they are not distinctly different from each other. I did attempt a long exposure from this spot but it was just far too windy and the vibrations from the tripod ruined each shot.
