A shot from last summer, we’d had a evening trip to Downderry to eke out a few more hours in the weekend before returning to work on Monday. These 2 boats were gently bobbing in the swell and I liked how the horizon has merged in with the sea giving it a real minimalist look.

Last night I ventured up to Pew Tor, a scouting trop as it's new Tor for me. The clouds didn't really hang around for sunset but I did get some lovely glow over the trees in the distance so I took some shots with the long lens instead,

mit einer schönen Spiegelung im Wasser.

We’ve been down into deepest-darkest Cornwall this weekend and managed to get to Godrevy for sunset on Friday, and what a stunner it was! This was taken after I’d packed up and was walking up to the car and the colour got even deeper so I quickly unpacked again and took a long exposure from the cliff top.

Bird on a stick really, nothing much else to say.

Yosemite National Park in California, truly a wonderous place which I was only able to spend a brief evening. Another shot of the cautious drinker. I went to Laikipia looking for a black leopard and wild dogs. I hadn’t even considered capturing a cheetah on camera, a rare sighting in those parts.

I've been to Kynance Cove many times over the years, but I wanted to find a different view so I headed up the hill behind the café. These rocks provided the perfect lead-in to the view of the island.

Downtime at Laikipia Wilderness River camp is never dull. There were several agamas and skinks skittering around the mosquito netting and the rocks outside my room. It was just a case of being patient to catch them at their best.

Pre-Spring snowfall in our backyard, the rounds of two 100 foot pines we had taken down, coated with snow a wonderful contrast to the dark bark of the pine tree in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas in Northern California. These will be allowed to season and will eventually be split for firewood to be burnt in our wood stove. He took all day to find on my last day in Samburu. Skittish gerenuk and a single vehicle that had spotted him as he broke cover gave him away. We watched him hunt as the sun dropped until we were told politely by a ranger that we should not still be out at that time. Very good looking cat.

Another shot from my recent trip to Shag Rock, between Downderry and Portwrinkle.

After we had watched the african sun drop below the hills in Samburu we raced back along the river to find the lions that we had missed earlier. The light was almost gone and I had to rely on high iso, slow shutter speeds and hoped the animals didn’t move too quickly to get a few shots.

I’ve not been out much recently due to other commitments and some pretty uninspiring weather, but I did pick up a copy of Aurora HDR in the recent Humble Bundle so I thought I’d give it a try. This is the first attempt, so far it seems simple enough to use though it’s very easy to go completely overboard and get the dreaded “HDR look”, so being gentle with sliders seems to be the key!

Another shot from Polhawn beach, searching for a different composition there I spotted some green seaweed clinging to the top of a rock which stood out quite nicely against glow of the sunset.

After the glorious colour had died down and the clouds had started to pour in and cover the sky I decided to get out the 10-stopper and have a go at a few long exposures. This is a 60 second exposure, long enough to obliterate the large waves and always looks good when paired with some of nice craggy rocks.

I've never seemed to have much luck with sunsets at the Pentire Poppies, but after years of trying I finally managed a good one

More downtime at Laikipia Wilderness River camp. There was a huge web between my room and the mess area and I just had to get some shots of its occupants.

Nephila is a genus of araneomorph spiders noted for the impressive webs they weave. Nephila consists of numerous species found in warmer regions around the world, although some species formerly included in the genus have been moved to Trichonephila. They are commonly called golden silk orb-weavers, golden orb-weavers, giant wood spiders, or banana spiders.

A rather minimalist take on St. Germans Viaduct in the fog.

Colliford Lake, when there was a bit more water there! Originally taken as a bit of a snap, but I've grown to like the tones in this image.

Another shot from Sunday morning at Start Point, this time a little later in the morning after the colours had faded but before the sun dived behind the clouds plunging the South West into greyness for the day!

Kynance Cove from the “wrong side”… I was looking for alternative views of the cove and wandered further than I normally do and decided to offset the blues of the water with the yellow from the gorse.

Last Sunday I met up with Shaun from TimeSlip Photography and we made our way to Colliford Lake to see the petrified trees. The forecast was looking good for a nice sunrise, but unfortunately nothing came of it and it was just another grey morning so I decided to use monochrome to pull out some extra details from a particularly interesting tree at the side.

I took a diversion on the way to work on Thursday morning, deciding to have a look and find the most perfectly placed trees in Devon… if you follow any kind of South West photography, I’m sure you’ve seen it before but this was my first trip. As there was so little wind it allowed me to take a long exposure which smooths out the water and the clouds, while still keeping details in the branches… and yes, I have tinkered with the colours to make them a bit more autumnal!

One more from last Saturday's trip to Portwrinkle, this time a portrait shot using the waves to lead your eye to the sunrise

My last shot from Bedruthan Steps, I decided to leave the beach and head up the cliff for the final part of the evening where we got some lovely afterglow lighting up the clouds.

On Sunday evening I managed to get a couple of hours out of Christmas preparations and headed down to Whitsand Bay. I had originally planned to head onto the rocks around the beach but the sea was absolutely roaring so there was no way I was going to take the chance and just hung around at the base of the path. The sun dipped below the clouds on the horizon before a full-blown sunset could develop but still managed to light up the high clouds looking towards Rame Head.

On Friday night I met up with Shaun from Timeslip Photography and headed up to Polzeath, it was one of those evenings where you really doubt why you’re going out as it had been grey and murky all afternoon but there was still some definition in the clouds so we decided to head out anyway. It’s been years since I’ve been to Polzeath, in fact looking through the archives it was way back in 2013! The wind was howling as we left the car park, giving us plenty of wave action, enough that you really had to watch the water at all times for fear of being caught out and luckily there was a small gap in the clouds which gave us some awesome light for a few minutes too.

Friday night I took a quick trip down to Polhawn, at this time of year it’s one of the few places along Whitsand Bay that still gets the sun setting over the sea. As seems to happen fairly frequently, a bank of clouds over Cornwall ruined any chance of a proper sunset but I managed a few shots before the sun got too low in the sky.

A nice group of Grévy's zebras in the early morning light.

Grévy's zebra is the largest living wild equid and the most threatened of the species. It is found in parts of Kenya and Ethiopia. Grévy's zebras' physical features can help to identify it from the other zebra species; their overall appearance is slightly closer to that of a mule, compared to the more "equine" (horse) appearance of the plains and mountain zebras. Compared to other zebra species, Grévy's are the tallest; they have mule-like, larger ears, and have the tightest stripes of all zebras. They have distinctively erect manes, and more slender snouts.

The Grévy's zebra live in semi-arid savanna, where they feed on grasses, legumes, and browse, such as acacia; they can survive up to five days without water. They differ from the other zebra species in that they do not live in a harem, and they maintain few long-lasting social bonds. Stallion territoriality and mother–foal relationships form the basis of the social system of the Grévy's zebra. In its native home this zebra is listed by the IUCN as endangered. Its population has declined from 15,000 to 2,000 since the 1970s. In 2016, the population was reported to be "stable"; however, as of 2020, the wild numbers are still estimated at only around 2,250 animals.

It seems like an age since I’ve been out and captured a good sunset, I seem to keep missing them at the moment so here’s a shot of Godrevy from a few weeks ago. I do love a bit of drama on the Cornish coast!

I love Laikipia Wilderness Camp and the ability to get out of the vehicle and shoot wildlife on your own terms. This young calf was wary and hid behind it’s mother’s legs but eventually came out of cover to enjoy a drink from the still flowing river. Taken one evening along the riverbank hiding behind scrub and feeling privileged to watch a family of elephants enjoy the water.

An early start on Thursday morning, as I had to go up to the office in Exeter I decided to head to Haytor on the way… I really should have left a few minutes earlier as the colour was developing nicely as I arrived at the car park and I nearly gave myself a heart attack trying to make my way up to the rocks as quickly as I could! Good job I did get there as the clouds didn’t retain too much colour once the sun had risen.

Another shot from last week’s visit to “boiler beach”, which is half-way between Polhawn and Freathy on Whitsand Bay. Definitely a beach that will require further investigation over the winter months.

My third and final image from Start Point which I visited a few weeks ago, I do like to separate out images from the same visit if they are not distinctly different from each other. I did attempt a long exposure from this spot but it was just far too windy and the vibrations from the tripod ruined each shot.

How close can you go? I had lots of close encounters with elephants in Samburu. Just sit in the car and a herd will wander by as they munch their way through the foliage. This little guy just didn’t want us to go and gave us a little display while we waited.

With Storm Freya passing through Cornwall on Sunday I took a quick trip down to Portwrinkle as the waves crashing over the old harbour wall are always fun to shoot… unfortunately there was so much spray flying in the air that nearly every shot had some form of glare in it, but I did try some other shots from near the larger wall which was a bit more sheltered. Nice to bump into Jonathan from Liminal Light there, I wasn’t the only one mad enough to be out taking shots!

A bit of minimalism today, this is the harbour wall at Sennen Cove taken with a 50 second exposure to give a smooth effect on the water which concentrates the shape of the wall.
