¿Dónde están las paradas de micro?...bienvenido al caos urbano!

by Polona Tratnik

Micro Flesh features five projects in which microbiology of the human body is explored in various ways: 37°C (2001/3), Micro cosm (2002/6), In-Time (2005/7), Unique (2006), Hair Lasje (2005/7).

The processual incubative installations presented as interfaces between art and science include living micro organisms, skin and hair cells. With biotechnological procedures of fragmentation and reconstruction of body, the artist manipulates living material, effecting a re-examination of the notion of living and altering the understanding of the human organism, which is undergoing profound change through tissue engineering and other microbiological procedures. Using scientific tools and methods in the sphere of art the actual social and political questions regarding biotech discourse are being discussed. The project presented at Ars Electronica is Unique, which involves the cultivation of micro cultures donated by observers.

Went walking at the Zig Zag yesterday. It was a cold and rainy day, perfect for a bush walk.

Found this and to me it looked like a mini landscape.

A collembolan, also known as a springtail. These little guys – and other collembolan species – were out in huge numbers on our warm Sunday afternoon, scampering around the bark and the lichens on the trees near the creek by our place.

Springtails used to be considered insects, but are now placed taxonomically in their own group. Most of them are very small; I really had to get right up to the trees to see them. Several people walked by me on the trail and probably figured I was just some sort of weirdo. Oh well, as a photographer and an entomologist (and sort of all-around geek), I'm fairly used to that.

To get an idea of the size of this beast, I had my macro lens virtually right on top of it. This critter is about the size of a lowercase letter in your morning paper... actually, it's a bit smaller than that.

I'm not a springtail expert by any means, but I think that this one belongs to the family Hypogastruridae. I stand to be corrected, however.

Decluttr-ing definitely gives you a better view by ramping up the size a bit.

I decided to start learning to build a bit more elaborately with some thought and planning and more advanced brick connections. The tiny side windows were a trick I devised that I later learned others also solved this kind of thing long before I did! I wanted to accomplish a reasonably interesting scene with some modular features (the middle portion slides out).

Also check out my latest favorite build, the Taj Mageddon! (click to see and then navigate left/right to see the alternate angles).

I initially planned for this ship to be minifig scale, but it quickly became micro scale as the skeleton consumed all the internal space. Thought it would still be fun to pose the crew on the deck though - ready to deliver ice-cream to systems in need!

The only traffic was the micro buses.

Project - THEATRE

"One Night Only"

By Daniel Doggett

The showcase for the Micro Commission Theatre project took place on Sunday 5 October 2014 in the Cornerhouse Annexe.

One Night Only (written by Daniel Doggett) revolves around the theme of escapism, with the narrative following two very different men who both happen to be having a really hard time of it. Over the space of one weekend, the two of them share more with each other than they have with anybody else in their entire lives. They reveal their most intimate thoughts and secrets. It seems unrealistic that two strangers would be so open with each other, but that’s the point. After this short time they’ll never see each other again, so this weekend is just a time to escape the difficulties they’re each facing in their lives. The performance starred two local actors and was directed by a local director.

This moth is extremely small with a wing span that is probably less than 1/2". It was photographed in North Augusta, SC near a deciduous forest.

If someone can help ID this one, then you are a moth expert. ID help appreciated.
