After working for a number of fashion designers in Damascus, Nazreen Safar set up her own fashion business in 2019 specialising in traditional bead work. At that time it was just her and one other person running the business. in 2021, Nazreen applied for a small grant from AKF to purchase some modern equipment to allow her to develop more sophisticated designs. As part of AKF’s Work and Enterprise programme in Syria, AKF provides grants to businesses which have the potential to grow and create jobs. In 2022, Nazreen received an additional grant which she blended with a loan from AKDN’s First Micro-finance Bank in order to solarise her business which, like much of Syria, had been hampered by intermittent electricity supply. As a result, her business grew by 150% and she was able to hire more staff. Today, she has 15 employees, 9 full time and 6 part time to keep with demand. Nazreen sells to customers across Syria and Lebanon typically for celebratory moments like engagements, weddings and parties.
As part of its Work and Enterprise programme in Syria, AKF supports a number of small businesses so that they can better weather the shocks of Syria’s economic crisis. The business - established by Fouad Alkhatib - manufactures decorations and insulation made out of polystyrene boards for restaurants, hotels and other business. In 2021, Fouad was awarded a small grant from to purchase an air compressor to increase the productivity of his business. In 2022, using another grant from AKF and a loan, Fouad was able to install a solar energy system. Previously, his business would only receive 2 hours of electricity a day so he would need to use expensive diesel generators to keep the business running. Now he has access to electricity all day long. Consequently, he has been able to hire 18 people and run two shifts a day to keep up with demand. His profits have grown from $85 a month in 2021 to $375 a month in 2023.
I placed the stock in the sled and placed the stop block so as the other end of the stock hits the saw. Then I transfered the feeler gauge to push the stock more into the blade! A micro adjustment.
I put an abandoned paper wasp nest, Polistes metricus, in a container, and got these micro-wasps, pteromalids that are likely Dibrachys cavus, emerging by the dozens, totaling well over one hundred. Leavenworth, Kansas, USA, November 19, 2021.

The binomial latinate name for the Little Pied Cormorant is Microcarbo melanoleucos, with the Microcarbo refering to their diminutive size "Micro" and black coloration "carbo." They are a noticeably small species of cormorant, though a larger species, the Pied Cormorant (Phalacrocorax varius) is almost identical in terms of plumage, which can make identification tricky unless the bird is seen well -- and you are paying enough attention.
