We Monks do have a taste for kitsch and for "found objects" and ephemera. We even have a set of pictures on Flickr with that name, and when we stumbled upon the current Pascale Marthine Tayou show at the Serpentine Sackler Gallery, in Hyde Park London, we both responded positively.
Confirming Monk philosophy, we dare speculate that Pascale has found and offered beauty and joy and relevance in everyday colourful bulk issue fast food plastic straws, pipes and bags and bottles.
The theme of the show is artfully “suggested” and not hammered home; allowing the meaning and the connections between each motif to sink-in without fuss or pretension.
Those art lovers who lined up to see and pay to see Damien Hirst’s diamond skull in order to find the meaning of life, should consider staying away.
Pascale’s Visitors will not be required to pay for that privilege and will not fail to register his polemic before they find the exit.
Joy indulged, message delivered.
Pascale describes his installation as "deceitful";
I would add, knowingly so.
A pleasure to be had...... the politics of ....
OIL
STRAW
CHOCOLATE
WATER
And the means by which it is distributed.

Whilst on holiday in Whitby we went out looking for a pub to eat at and came across an old abandoned building in a little place called Goldsborough. I only had my Sigma 30mm f/1.4 with me so went in and took these photos.
The place was a complete wreck and had been partially burned down.

I photographed this messaged by a river walk. It was inked onto an electrical box and stood out in an almost alien way on an otherwise ordinary object.
Sooyoung’s Message for SONE
-->Since being involved in a car accident on August 28th, Sooyoung has been receiving love from fans all over the world. Many fans have been sending video messages, and one Korean fan site even made a message book filled with handwritten messages from SONE.
To reassure fans and say thank you, Sooyoung edited a video by herself and shared it online today. The video starts with a doll of the character Woody from the movie “Toy Story” and you can hear Sooyoung’s voice in the background cutely acting with the doll saying, “Hello to everyone who loves Girls’ Generation, this is Woody. So you were worried about my friend Sooyoung? She kinda looked sick, but after getting all the love from you guys she’s fine now. Sooyoung asked me to send you guys a video. So, wait why is my voice so girly now? Now SONE, let’s watch the video!”
The emotional ballad “Complete” starts playing in the background, and pictures saying that Sooyoung is OK in various languages along with pictures of some of the messages she received are shown. Sooyoung thanks everyone for the love she received since her accident and apologizes to fans in Taiwan for not being able to perform for them.
The video ends with a message in Korean that says “SONE…Wait for me without crying, ok? ^^ heehee” and a picture of Sooyoung holding a handwritten sign that says “SONE Makes My Life Complete”. Sooyoung shows how much she cares about SONE and how much SONE care for her. It is a truly special moment, as that bond is felt deeply in the video. We all hope for a quick recovery for Sooyoung.

A Valentine's postcard that bears a real photograph and was printed in Great Britain.
The card was posted in Colchester on Sunday the 28th. August 1938 to:
Miss Ingoldby,
Flat 1,
Market Buildings,
Felpham,
Nr. Bognor Regis,
Sussex.
The message on the back of the card was as follows:
"Aldham Rectory
Colchester.
Aug 28th. 1938.
Just a line to let you know
that we are both all right.
Mother has been staying
with us for ten days, and
left us yesterday.
She has gone for a further
little change to Cleveden,
Somerset.
I don't know when we shall
be leaving here yet or where
we shall be going to afterwards
but will let you know as soon as
we know ourselves.
Much love from Joan".
So what else happened on the day that the card was posted?
Well, on the 28th. August 1938, Lord Runciman held a hastily arranged meeting with Sudeten German leader Konrad Henlein to discuss the Sudeten crisis.
