Thousands of residents have been evacuated following a series of spectacular eruptions of Merapi during the last two days. Mount Merapi, which translates as "Fire Mountain," has erupted scores of times over the last 200 years, often with deadly results. It is one of the world's most active volcanoes.In 1994, 60 people were killed by a searing gas cloud while in 1930, more than a dozen villages were incinerated, leaving 1,300 dead.
Borobudur was unfortunately closed when we visited it due to the huge amount of volcanic ash falling from recently active Mt Merapi.
Yogyakarta, 5 November 2010: After the most violent eruptions yet, tens of thousands of people are on the move away from Mount Merapi on the Indonesian island of Java. Many have fled to the city of Yogyakarta where they find shelter at the city's main football stadium. The death toll stands at over 120 after hot ash and gas cascaded down the mountain overnight. Some 200,000 are now reported to fled their homes seeking shelter. By early morning the stadium has already received some 5,000 people and local authorities, security forces, the local Red Cross, NGOs and hundreds of local volunteers are now scrambling to provide to the basic needs of the displaced, such as food, water and basic medical attention. Indonesia's president has declared the crisis a "national disaster".
Mount Merapi or "Fire Mountain" erupted on 26 October. Local vulcanalogists are concerned further violent eruptions could follow. Huge columns of hot gas and ash continue to rise many kilometers into the sky and the region is being blanketed in a thin layer of fine ash, stinging eyes and throats.

I have never seen anything quite as spectacular as this. Four hours of steep ascend in the cold, I thought I wasn't going to survive this climb but my trusty guide held me by my wrist and dragged me up. Not something I'm too proud to admit of course! I shall blame Perth's topography for rendering my mountain hiking ability inexistent. Well worth every effort regardless.
Merapi volcano is one of the most active volcano in Indonesia, yet the eruption isn't fluctuate but the activity is all the time with the smoke and last biggest eruption was in 2010.
yes, it is one of the most active volcano in this world. the last eruption wiped out many village near Merapi into nothing but carpet of sands..

two days after we heard Mount Merapi experienced a landslide we headed to a hilly area called Ketap pass where the locals go to get a good view of the mountain.
but it had to rain that day so the entire area fogged up real bad. a 2 hours ride there and all we did was pose for funnies, like this one of Ngai Keong our senior taking a picture of the missing Mount Merapi.
Gunung Api Merapi adalah salah satu gunung aktif yang ada di Pulau Jawa bagian tengah. Pasca meletusnya gunung ini, banyak dilakukan penambangan terhadap pasir yang dikeluarkan. Beberapa infrastruktur yang rusak pun belum mendapatkan penanganan yang serius.
These small things were melted during the Merapi eruption, October 2010. They are now kept in local Museum called "Sisa Hartaku" (ruins of my treasures).
