Mount Merapi last eruption was on 30 November 2010.

A new museum launched in 2009 by the Kementerian Energi dan Sumber Daya Mineral (Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources). The location is rather desolate, but a very resourceful place to visit. An impressive museum idea and very educational.

Kaliadem means "Cold River." This is at the base of Mount Merapi, and the bunker is for protection in the case of an eruption.

Sand mining seems to be the principal activity around the Sabo dams where the cold lava flow carrying sand, boulders and debris are contained by the barriers during heavy torrential rain. The so-called Merapi Lava Tour by the operators of the jeep tour community turned out simply a 4WD adventure.

Taman Nasional Gunung Merapi - in 2004 an area of 6,410 hectares around Mount Merapi was established as a national park. The decision of the Ministry of Forestry to declare the park has been subsequently challenged in court by The Indonesian Forum for Environment, on grounds of lack of consultation with local residents. Following the 2010 eruption, three Indonesian government departments declared a prohibited zone which nobody can permanently stay and no infrastructure is allowed in several villages.

An early morning view from Deles, partially obscured by clouds.

We got to the Merapi danger zone at about 6.30AM. We could not go via one of the official waypoints so we had to take sideways and dissemble some barricades. We had a local guide and (presumably) bribed army security officer. Being there so soon was crucial since in rainy season, clouds can gather quickly covering the volcano making it impossible to see where the hot and toxic ash is being taken by the wind. At one moment, we had to get out of the bikes and continue walking

Pulang mencari rumput

Mount Merapi is one of the world's most dangerous and active volcanoes. Its still spewing out smoke and when the weather clears up we can see it from our hotel rooms very clearly.
