You are invited to view my online journal filled with photos and recollection of a Japan far removed from today, a Japan of the early 60s when the nation was reconstructing the infrastructure and learning the finer points of free-enterprise in both the private and the corporate sectors--a Japan that was totally infatuated with all things American, a Japan that was on the threshold of becoming the world's second largest economy. It was, for me, an education and a time that would shape my creative ideas for the nest five decades, a Japan that is so far away yet so near to my heart and mind.

At the south end of the Virginia War Memorial's Shrine of Memory stands this 23-foot marble statue titled Memory, to reflect both sorrow and pride regarding those lost in battle during World War II and later wars; 50 tons of white marble were used to create this sculpture, which was designed by Leo Friedlander and sculpted by Joseph Campo and William Kapp. The next photo is a full-lenth view of the statue, while the preceding one is a closer view of the eternal flame. I met up with Flickr friend Tim Carrier (tcpix) here last Saturday at the start of several hours of shooting together. We had hoped for a prettier day, but overcast weather seemed appropriate here.
A few years ago, I had a film camera that I carried around with me that did not force the user to wind the film after every shot, allowing for multiple exposures. I made a point to only ever advance the film when I was just about to take a picture, and if I couldn't remember if I'd already used the current frame, I did not advance the film. These are images of things I wanted to remember, blurred into each other as a result of lapses in my memory.
last summer we were in owens valley during an oddly muggy, dusty and smoky period. we had several days of astonishing sunsets, and i just rediscovered this one. from hiway 395, just south of bishop, august 1st.

Kids memory is one of the best fun and memory game on android and iOS platform for kids. New Orleans
This is one of the most distinguished-looking public libraries I've ever seen. When I was young, I spent lots of Saturdays and summer days here. It was a short bike-ride from my house. As a kid, I didn't realize just how wonderful this building was. On our recent visit to New Orleans, I was happy to see that it looked quite similar to the way I remember it.
Originally a mansion built in the early 20th century, the building was donated to the city by the Latter family. With a large yard and a wide, inviting porch, this library has an elegance that makes you wish all libraries could be housed in such a distinctive building. The location is pure New Orleans -- surrounded by trees and similar mansions with the St. Charles streetcars clanging as they go by.
One unusual aspect of this building is that its front is not perpendicular to the street and sidewalk it faces. Instead, the sides are perpendicular to the side-streets, which come into St. Charles Ave. at an angle. The angle is difficult to perceive from this photo, but you can see it by clicking the Map link on this page. The lot takes an entire city block, and the angle provides an extra measure of interest, despite it being such an unusual feature.
This is not a clear picture, but I shot it from a moving streetcar. It's one of four quick shots I got, and this one is the best of the bunch. :-)
Books I grew up with and then shared with my kids when they were little. Found this topic quite a challenge - grew up in Canada and now live in South Africa - so many memories of snow, skiing, skating ,,, but no way of capturing them
Ashness a big draw for for visitors clearly must have special memories for whoever left the bunch of daffodils

Only a few hours ago I heard about the sudden death of Marsha Ellen Meidow (that's her on the left with her mom on the right)... I knew Marsha as a promoter of the arts here in Calgary, a skilled charity event organizer most notably known for Femme Fatale... She also worked with troubled youth with great vigour and passion, to keep them off the streets and out of trouble...
I just received this in my e-mail shortly before posting this photo...
"It is with great sorrow we must inform you Marsha Ellen Meidow has slipped away and begun another journey. Her spirit shall continue to dance, our memories of her will make us smile and her light will shine within each of us.
Join us in celebrating the Life of the Legendary Marsha Ellen Meidow. We know that Marsha has touched the lives of so many. Everyone is welcome to attend this event. Please know that she passed peacefully without pain, surrounded by her family and love ones.
